2023 NHL Draft situation

I like the optimism, I just don't see how the Hawks stay below ANA, SJ, and AZ in the West. CLB is ready to implode and a couple of other teams are ready to fall apart.

The Hawks are going to have some streaks picking up points. There are going to be alot of meaningless games for playoff teams the last 3 dozen games.

I hope they bottom out, but I'm not sure they'll be able to yet.
If Kane and Toews continue to struggle producing as you mentioned in your previous post then the Hawks will have no problem staying below ANA, SJ and AZ, who else is there to provide enough consistent offence to have these “streaks” you speak of?

If PK and JT do manage to pick up the offensive production, then yes you may be correct and the Hawks climb to the 5 - 7 pick range. The thing is, that makes them more marketable as well as Domi, Athanasiou, TJ, Raddysh etc., who will benefit from playing with them. Once the trade deadline happens and they move out all of the tradeable assets the Hawks will have 20+ games to bottom out again.

I believe I also read that the Hawks schedule is heavily weighted with home games at the start of the year and finishes with a lot of road games. Those road trips will become even more difficult when the players realize they are just playing out the season and counting down the games to the off season while watching their best veterans leaders move on to greener pasture.

Centers can play wing. Just get the high end talent here.
Plus, who the hell even knows how Nazar will develop.

Talking yourself out of Conor Bedard because you have Frank Nazar is some odd Bowman-type stuff. Most of the time it’s best not to overthink it and just take the best player available.

If all else fails believe in Mrazek. In my opinion the Hawks aren’t scoring more than two goals and Mrazek isn’t giving up less than 3 for a large portion of the remaining games. Especially if 4/6 of the top lines are traded as is expected by many.

Maybe Mrazek was solid in Detroit and Carolina as I remembered, but he sucks now.

He was good for awhile. He was on some good teams too. I think more than anything injuries have diminished his ability quite a bit. He’s always had a knack for blunders when it really counted though.

I mean he’s only let in less than 3 goals in 2 of the 8 games he’s started. I don’t see that progression changing much regardless of his quality of play. I can’t imagine anything more than another 20 wins in the season and goaltending is definitely a major catalyst in that.

Not to take away from the other glaring issues, I just believe it was entirely a plan to plant nothing but question marks in the crease going into the season. Trying to balance out building a positive culture and competent zone systems while also being aware of being bad (and especially in these next 2 years) is a tight rope.

I do t understand why some people are worried about 5’10” players in juniors. Most likely will grow some.
Especially when all these guys that are listed at 6’0” are in reality 5’10”. Kane had a good career. Crosby is under 6. So is Point and DeBrincat and Zuccarello and Caufield… Fox and Makar. Some of them obviously aren’t even pushing 5’10”.

It’s evident size can be an asset or detriment but it’s not an absolute defining factor in determining a player’s ability to transition or utilize their skill.

Height is overrated for hockey. Especially when you're talking about the difference between 5'10 and 6'.
I generally believe if they are defined by physical attributes then there’s not much else to the player. We’ve been proven so often awareness and IQ finds the adaptability to produce regardless.

BPA is the only way that early. If you end up with too many top 6 centers, that's a pretty good problem to have.

Ducks grab a point in OT. Only two point out of last place. I cannot understate how bad Zegras looked. Who cares about points when you‘re completely useless in every other facet of the game. (I know it was only one game)

Completely agree. If there was ever an era for smaller hockey players, this is it. You can skate? You have a high hockey IQ? High level of skill or grit? You're probably just fine.
If my scouting department has a group of players in the same tier, I'm probably taking the guy with size though.

But in cases like DeBrincat, where he's obviously the BPA, go for it.
