2023 NHL draft prospects

In many drafts (2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020), I had known the top 2 for several years.

In 2017 I had Lafrenière in 1 and Byfield in 2. Even a great Stutzle will not have changed the hierarchy.

Since the 2018/2019 season, Shane Wright has established himself as No. 1 in 2022 and no one will be able to change the situation.

It is the experiences of past drafts that lead me to anticipate. There are rarely any surprises at the top of the NHL Draft.

A player who has performed exceptionally well since the age of 13 does not suddenly collapse. I'm talking about real exceptional players. Those who have really proven this over and over and not those who have benefited from a very quickly denied hype like Veleno, Day or Raty.

Bedard, Michkov and Dvorsky are all exceptional players, in the sense that their performances are extremely rare. And the start of the 2021/22 season only strengthens their credit. The 2023 draft in particular will not offer any surprises at its peak. You will see and if I am wrong, I gladly agree to have my ears pulled.

But I do not see where the player who will change the podium can come from. Fantilli is too late and the best American prospects (Musty and Minnetian if I trust the US specialists) are not advertised at a franchise level. In addition, they are disadvantaged by the position.

Bedard is unheard of in Canada. Even McDavid wasn't so dominant at the same age.

Michkov is unheard of in Russia. Stronger than Ovechkin at the same age.

Dvorsky as I just saw yesterday, if he maintains an average of points above 1.5, left to become the biggest benchmark of the Swedish Junior circuit at 16. He already has 8 points in 4 games. And to fly over the HG with a year less than the others is already extremely rare. He is light years ahead of Lucas Raymond, released 4th in 2020.

If a player steps in among them, it will truly be the greatest draft in history. Because currently, I have never seen a top 3 so strong at this stage (start of the draft season -2)

Fantilli will be playing in the NCAA during his draft year, a Hobby Baker contention could add him to the conversation. Calum Ritchie in the OHL and William Smith in the USNTDP are two guys who have top 5 potential.

I do not discover his players. I just don't understand on what occasions you could have Adam Fantilli and especially William Smith better than Dalibor Dvorsky.

As already said, either you are very strong concerning William Smith and you have very rare information to date, or you throw his name like that, in a haphazard way.

For me he's just a USDP guy and to be top 5 he already has to show that he is the best player on his team, something that is not done.

Same idea for Ritchie. If he was selected behind Musty in the OHL draft, it is because he is currently seen as weaker than him.

For me Fantilli is a definite top 10, Ritchie looks like a first round and Smith looks like a selectable player.

Statistics are nonsense. You put any best player in the “bad” five, and that's it, there are no statistics. The player must be individually good

10 Canadians in the top 15. I'm not going to restart the debate but when the actual draft takes place, you will see that there will be fewer Canadians.

The order of the North Americans seems logical to me except Peddle in front of Gauthier, according to my pre-junior career logic.

USDP players are very difficult to rank.

A very important European player is missing: Mikhail Gulyayev. Probably the most talented Russian born in 2005 eligible in 2023 since he is the only player born in 2005 to play outclass with the Russian selection. He was by far the best Russian defender at the Hlinka-Gretzky tournament.

I will classify him instead of Lindstein in 6. Lindstein has never shown anything during an international competition and seems to be in great difficulty in the Swedish U20.

Not seen playing. I should see him in part during the U17 world tournament for the first time.

His career path does not make him a top 10 prospect against players of the same age who have shown things at a certain level.

I usually love Swedish defenders and find it hard to conceive of a mock top 32 without a Swedish defender. The most advanced Swedish 05 player seems to be Otto Stenberg. His name may be slipping into a very hazardous top 20 at this point.

Nah...Mario is still the most hyped Canadian 16 year old ever.
I doubt Michkov is 'unheard' of in Russia either but i'm not Russian so i'll leave that one alone.
If your point is that Bedard, Michkov with Dvorsky clearly at #3 are very very unlikely to be overtaken then I agree with you. Absolutely incredible to me that there's even another guy who can be mentioned in the same sentence with Bedard and Michkov. What a draft!

Well there is a very interesting article here about Dvorsky and it mentions Linstein here 5 August 2021

Remember Dalibor Dvorsky's Name for the 2023 NHL Draft

Michov, Connor Bedard and Adam Fantilli are three of the top names at the moment, but Dvorsky, Quentin Musty, Brayden Yager and Theo Lindstein, among others, are all in the conversation right now.

Dmen are a little harder to project as defensive skills aren't going to always show up on the box score or game highlights.

I say all of this without seeing him play so I will defer to the scouts that he is in the mix with 4 others after the top 3 right now.

It's still pretty much 2 years till the draft though.

As for 27. Samuel Barcik, I'm not sure he's so high today. The boy clearly has talent, I am from Zvolen and I see him playing live all the time. But there are still a few elements in his game that he needs to improve, especially mobility and defensive play. Probably the second rounder or third rounder player today. But I agree with the trio of Dvorsky, Ciernik and Molnar. But it's still very early.
