Bedard, Carlsson, Dvorsky, Fantilli, Michkov, Ritchie are all potential #1 overall quality prospects.

This thread just shows how good numbers or playing at a high level early can make prospects ridiculously overrated. Carlsson is definitely not top 5 material. First rounder maybe, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

I've been looking for hidden Russian gems for the 2022 NHL Draft (first year of draft eligibility, not ranked by CSS and other major scouting agencies) and a few 2023 Draft eligible prospects popped on my radar. I would be extremely surprised not seeing them being mentioned in next year's Central Scouting's watch list. I'm not sure where they land in the draft but they are showing great potential so far:

Pavel Afanasyev (D) | Belye Medvedi #5
Mikhail Gulyayev (D) | Omskie Yastreby #84
Sergei Lukyantsev (F) | Sarmaty Orenburg #87
Alexander Rykov (F) | Belye Medvedi #12

Leaving William Wallinder (Rögle) outside the Swedish WJC roster is not ok. Nothing to do with de draft 2023. But i said it will all be sorted out by then. i don´t understand that decision at all.

Do you think Stenberg is the cream of the crop as things stand out of Sweden? Projection wise of course, not current level.

A long way to go, but right now I feel the top 6 are as follows:

Bedard
Michkov
Dvorsky
Ritchie
Yager
Fantilli

After that, there are lots of other forwards I like, including Benson, Sale, Stenberg, Wood, Musty, Danielson, Smith, and Heidt.

The draft seems a little weak on defense right now, but that will change as we get closer to the draft.

I feel that Heidt is underestimated. He is second on points in his team with 19, two less than Armstrong but 3 games in hand. He leads the team in ppg, is a very good two-way center and has a surreal faceoff game for the age of 52% with an average of 10.16 losers per game. Insane numbers for a 16 year old. He should definitely fight for the top 5. I would add at least a top 7 to this mess lol

I still can't believe how ridiculous the top of this class is, and these are all their current d-1 stats:

Bedard: 24 points in 24 games (made canada wjc at 16)
Michkov: 5 points in 13 KHL games (just turned 17)
Fantilli: 35 points in 25 games (4th in USHL scoring)
Dvorsky: 27 points in 20 J20 games, 1 in 10 Allsvenskan
Ritchie: 22 points in 23 games
Yager: 27 points in 27 games
Benson: 27 points in 23 games
Musty: 17 points in 21 games

And then there's Matthew Wood who is putting up Newhook and K. Johnson draft year numbers as a 16 year old in the BCHL.

He hasn't played this season yet due to injury (on track to return in January after off-season surgery) but folks are really sleeping on Charlie Stramel. Long way to go but unless his injury derailed his development, I'd be surprised if a guy with his size and skill isn't comfortably in the top 10 right now.

Might just be how deep the top end of the 23 draft is but there are other guys who will push as well.

It's going to be a great draft for any team with a couple of picks in the top 10-15 in 23 that's for sure.

Right now most people have not seen all the top players, so people assess based on hype. A player like Stramel is not going to receive hype because he’s injured and not playing. I don’t blame anyone for assessing on hype. I don’t think anyone could give a great assessment at this point, myself included, but a lot of these players people suggest now will be nowhere near the top players once we get a full picture of all the best players in the draft.

I think the best thing one could do at this point is to assess each prospect based on what they show and how they project, and then account draft ranges for the average draft. You might not know of a certain number of players who is better than a player with mid first round potential, but you should believe that there will be players better than these players. Making a list of names right now is stupid because some of the players that’ll be listed simply don’t have top 5–10 potential due to flaws in their skillset.

This is shaping up to be an extremely good draft from a Canadian stand point. There could be 20 plus Canadians in the first round.

It’s a great year for Canadians but there is very low chance they place 20+ in the first round. I’d have the following 11 non-Canadiens in my top 20.

Russia (Gulyayev, Michkov)
Slovakia (Dvorsky)
Sweden (Carlsson, Stenberg)
USA (Moore, Musty, Smith, Stramel)
Finland (Halttunen)
Czech Republic (Sale)

No love for Yager? It’s shaping up to be a stacked draft, but even still he seems like a top 10 prospect to me, maybe even top 5.
