How deep is this draft compared to 2015? Is it just top heavy?

It's not just top heavy but really hard to say that it can be as good as the 15 draft some excellent forwards there and alot of great Dmen too.

Forward wise I think it might stack up but it's way too early to tell.

What do you guys think of top players from Sweden for 2023? Were do you see someone like Noah Dower Nilsson or Johannes Sideback ranked. Do they look like future nhlers?

Leo Carlsson is the only elite-level prospect.

Beneath him I'd have:

2. Otto Stenberg
3. Theo Lindstein
4. Hugo Hell
5. Noah Dower Nilsson
6. Kalle Carlsson
7. Liam Engstrom
8. Zeb Forsfjall
9. Jacob Sagadin
10. Axel Landen

Other names to watch include:

Arvid Bergstrom
Felix Nilsson
Gustav Ling
Isac Hedqvist
Joel Svensson
Linus Lindgren
Lucas Stockselius
Noah Erliden
Rasmus Ekstrom
Victor Westh

Johannes Sideback hasn't had a great year with the majority played in J18 with moderate production.

Hi! I would say that the 2005-born guys in Sweden is a strong group, but maybe not including a elite-level prospect. Agree on Leo Carlsson. Otto Stenberg is the one standing out at the moment. Lindstein is up and down. And some times i have to question the clubs. It´s like they just decide to promote a guy or two. Pushing them in J20 and even the A-team and there is no substance that just that kid should be there all the time. They are not in detail watching what they are doing in a game i guess. Last night i watched the U18 game between Västerås - Färjestad (2-5). Including a lot of prospects. For the first, Färjestads 2005 born guys are strong. Maybe the strongest group in Sweden. But what impressed me most was not the individuell skills. But how hard they worked. How physical they played. Sidebäck was ok and scored a nice goal, but at the same time he lost the puck a little to often. Hugo Hell is far from being the best defender even in Färjestads 2005-born buys. Noel Fransén (two nice goals) and Victor Westh was far better this game. And i have not really over these years seen Hugo Hell as a top prospect in Sweden. To sloopy with the puck. The line in Färjestad including prospects Gustav Ling and Wille Johansson started the game strong but faded out a bit. Really good players but top prospects? Not sure. The top scorer Elliot Ståhlberg worked hard but no more. Goalie Melvin Cassåsen played really well do. In Västerås top scorer Hugo Lejon was missing. Gustaf Kangas had a quite week game. William Ekman-Cederborg worked hard and played a decent game. But no one really stood out in Västerås. it was a very physical game between two good teams. From my point of view i would at least ad Lucas Sagranden (Örebro) to the list.

Is Michkov really staying in the KHL until 2026? If so, won't that potentially drop his draft slot?

He is. As to his draft slot you should probably ask scouts. Or even GMs.

But look at Minnesota, they were waiting Kaprizov for longer. I'm sure Michkov is going to be the better player, despite Kaprizov is pretty ridiculous.

By KHL rules he has to inform with 1.5 years in advance for a buyout of his contract IIRC, the most likely scenario is that he stays until 2026 with an outside chance that he leaves in 2025

Why did he choose to stay? Is the NHL not of interest to him, or is there something else to the story.

Why, how much is he set to get paid as an 18 year old?

They gave him a 6 year contract as a 15 yo. It's a contract that set him and his family for life. It's very likely he would stay the whole length of contract just as a loyalty symbol for what they did for him.

Still, if the three parties wanted I'm sure it could be worked out before, but unlikely

If Michkov's contract really causes his draft stock to drop I would have a lot of concerns about the teams passing on him. Michkov is about as close to a slam dunk franchise level or better player you can get at the draft. His skillset is very translatable and his production is historic. The wait for him to come over for a few years would 1000000% be worth it.

Hockey is like everything about human beings, you shouldn't try to find anything intelligent in people's logic here. First they laugh at you for a few years, that your prospect plays in the KHL and pretty possibly will never come over. Then they start to whine jealously about how lucky you were with that pick.

Teams know this and always try to get their prospects under control as soon as possible. If getting under control looks problematic, they can make pretty weird decisions. Like picking the guy who's about two levels worse, but is good old Canadian kid and will probably become a solid 4th liner right in time, when the kid they passed by becomes a 100 point player.

something around one mil for 5 seasons combined. relatively cheap.
Yeah. Loses out on like 20 million because he signed that contract. Thought it was a terrible idea at the time but hey.

Quite different situations though.

Kaprizov simply wasn't the same level of prospect and was a 5th rounder which makes it easy for teams to wait.

Michkov will be a top 3 pick and that makes it more difficult to wait, especially with all of the other elite top end talent in the draft.
