It's the same reason people have meltdowns regarding losing Marchment (who is having a worse season offensively than both Kerfoot + Jarnkrok) but fail to mention the brilliance of finding a diamond in the rough like Bunting.
It's just weird. As Leaf fans, we have the benefit of seeing how well a drafting for size strategy works. It was f***ing horrible, and Hunter made some huge whiffs that hold the team back even to this day. But people want to complain about Dubas' drafting philosophy even though it's miles and miles better because we missed out on Braden f***ing Schneider? There's no other reaction but to laugh

axel sandin pellikka ... just because of the name lmao

in all honesty. I like a goalie.

Michael Hrabal
Ht/Wt: 6' 6"/201 lbs
Position: G
Team: Omaha (USHL)

Tony Ferrari - The Hockey News - Dec. 19th: "It’s been a couple of years since we had a goaltender worthy of selecting in the first round, but Hrabal fits the bill this year. At 6-foot-6, he certainly has the size NHL clubs are looking for."

I can’t say who but Dubas must now pivot in philosophy. His small but skilled drafting is backfiring as his picks get injured and devalue. Amirov plus Robertson are both worth less that their own draft picks right now as other wiser Gms outsmarted Dubas. Hockey is hard game that gets brutal in the playoffs where you have to win ugly. Amirov and Robertson are currently worth zero and would likely get injured anyway. Stats don’t show how players who are injured have zero value as injuries give an excuse to the failed strategy.
This is false. Size has nothing to do with being injured. Go look at the LTIR at anytime of any year.

Amirov being out has nothing to do with size. He has a tumour.

I thought Amirov was someone that we already had a great supply of , skilled forwards.
We could have traded down and picked Schnieder, which was something we didn't have in the system.
Or
Guhle

Rangers traded up to grab Schneider if I remember correctly. So there were definitely a lot of teams interested in drafting him. He isn’t some scrub like some of our TML police posters (who always have to feel the need to tell others how they should feel about team decisions) make him seem. So not quite sure if trading down would have worked. As others have admitted, some would have loved Schneider. Seems to be carving out a decent NHL career anyways.

Those moments are probably really tough for management you have to weigh everything out and you probably want to go with the guy with the highest potential, I think safe picks have burned the leafs in the past. So I understand the Amirov selection.

Any nice goalies available?

Would like for us to draft and devlope a long-term starter using a 2nd rounder

Murray and Samsonov are nice for 2-3 years but we should have a young starting caliber ready in 3-4 years to come up and challenge for top spot

Not sure Schneider would be playing for us currently, and not sure he is carving out a decent NHL career.

I wanted Mercer at the time, I liked Amirov after I saw him play.

I don't follow prospects enough until close to the draft, but Schneider always seemed like a safe pick and someone who would play early but not be too impactful.

You do understand that he is on the bottom pairing? How is he supposed to surplant Fox or Trouba?

At the time we really didn't have a lot of skilled forwards at the position, especially LWs in the system.

So he is getting sheltered minutes and failing? his xGF is terrible.
Yep. He's playing like 14 minutes a game and getting slaughtered. He can't keep up with the pro level game, like he barely could in the CHL. Leaf fans fall in love with old ass physical defenseman that domimate 16 year olds with their size and can't do anything else. Also about as unsurprising as possible that he was rushed to the NHL and failed developmentally by the Rangers who should probably just be forced to trade all their draft picks at this point.

I’ll be honest I’m not a guy who obsesses over analytics. I understand them and understand they give a good picture and have importance but not the whole picture.

I don’t disagree, I wanted one of Guhle or Schneider just thought we would need a defenseman in the mix. If we had one of Guhle/Schneider plus Sandin and Liljegren we’d be better for it. As opposed to loading up on forwards which are easier to acquire.

I wish I could say I wanted Mercer but honestly I didn’t really know too much about Mercer until his rookie year. I feel he’s a guy who flew under the radar for many teams.

I would much rather have a healthy Amirov plus someone like Timmins than Guhle or Schnieder. Because it's a lot easier to get a 5/6/7D during this contention window than a Top 6 forward.

So. The 2023 draft. Let's talk about it. Not the 2020 draft. And not lament about not having a pick as it hasn't been traded yet.

What are we thinking of the depth of this draft? Let's say 20-120.
Right now I really like the idea of Quentin Musty but many have mentioned he likely won't be available at our pick.

I like the big centres around our range (Stramel/Ritchie) as we could definitely use some centre prospects in the organization. Big Russian LW Daniil But (I believe he's 6'5 or 6'6) is putting up big MHL numbers and has also seen some KHL games this year as a 17 year old is also interesting to me.

Hrabal 6'6" 200 pounds

I personally like it, there’s potential to get a really nice prospect in the 20-40 range. I almost hope we acquire an early second. If Bonk can somehow fall to the second round id work to acquire an early second and get him. Then with our first we have many options. You can go Center with Stramel or Ritchie, you can go winger with Musty, Zimmer, Maybe Gabe Perrault if he falls? Or defense with Bonk, Dragicevic, Cam Allen, Price?

Stramel is someone that I’ve been looking into for a while now. I like what he brings to the table and again would definitely fill a gap in our prospect system (Centre/Physicality). I don’t think he has many truly standout skills though which worry me a bit.
I’ve seen Hrabel in a few 1st round mocks. Think the Leafs would spend a first rounder on a goalie? Not sure I see them doing that.

Thank you for your expert analysis @kb !

Quentin Musty has to be one of my favourites in this draft just for the name alone... but he's got really good hands, very skilled. He just needs to work on his skating and speed. That will hold him back a lot.

Calum Ritchie would be alright. He reminds me a bit of the Minten pick. All around very good, much better than his stat line suggests. He's 2nd in scoring on the Generals (they are bad) as a 17 year old. The top scorer on that team is an overager and only has 5 more points.

Neither of those players would be on the Leafs right now, so......not sure where this is coming from.

It's just the simple stuff that's being missed like timelines.....

Is Musty that much of a riser? To be honest I rather have Stramel, what would you say is the thing that’s causing Musty to rise and keeping Stramel lower?
