Leonard is more than that. You’re making him sound like RHP.
In this draft he’s not worth picking top5. Habs have to swing for the fences for highest upside, highest production ceiling.

I’m typically a rather conservative guy in many ways — I was against the Slaf pick because of my conservatism and meagre risk appetite… I’d be ecstatic to have a Reinbacher or Leonard or Dvorsky but the Habs need a point producer in the pipeline more than anything and this is the draft that makes our two miserable years of tanking worthwhile or worthless.

If the pick we make busts out, so be it, but they have to aim for the stars with this one.

I think there’s a world where Leonard ends up the better player vs. Smith. Smith will always be more skilled but I could see Leonard being a better 5v5 player.

I definitely see a world where Leonard ends up a better PLAYER then Smith. In fact, I would't be surprise if it's happen. He will probably never be a better offensive player but he could end up bringing way more to a team then Smith

Definitely possible, Smith has a lower floor but also a higher ceiling IMO.

I see Leonard much the same way I daw Tkachuk in 2018. No doubt he will end up a top 10 player from the draft, and the most surefire bet outside of the top 4 to do so, but not sure there's much chance he ends up top 5, whereas Smith definitely could.

If Smith is gone let's go down with Detroit, #9 + #17 + #41 for #5 + #69

Then Trade #17 + #37 + #41 to Vancouver for #11

#9 + #11 for 2 of thoses : Reinbacher or ASP or Wood or Dvorsky or Leonard or Cristall
#29 : Ethan Gauthier or Dragevic

Not too bad ...

Best case scenario

#9 : Dvorsky
#11: ASP
#29 : Gauthier

It's a game of odds and risk taking, if I had a gun to my head and was forced to give my %, here's what I'd have them as

Smith

10% 90+ point player
20% PPG player
25% 60-70P player
25% 45-55P player and a fringe middle 6/PP specialist
20% never amounts to much and becomes a star AHLer

Leonard

20% PPG, 2 way beast
35% 60-70P, 2 way beast
35% 45-60P 2 way beast
10% 4th line player

I get it, but we are also talking about a 30-30 energy winger. We’ve had two different 3rd overall disappointments, maybe a sure-thing isn’t a bad result.

The thing with Leonard is there will most certainly be someone picked after him that gets more career points, but he’s not the type of player you end up disappointed you took.

We don’t need to tank and draft 60pt wingers, we need to tank and draft for PPG+ players. So that’s where I’ll make my stand.

But I respect your opinion. It’s perfectly valid.

Definitely agree with you. But like I said, when we get to that next tier, the argument can be made that he’s as good as Benson, Reinbacher, Dvorsky. This is assuming Michkov isn’t in Hughes’ thoughts.

Montreal
Craig Button's top 100

Some notables:

#5: ASP
#8: Willander
#12: Leonard
#14: Benson
#24: Reinbacher
#35: Cristall
#51: Heidt
#65: Lardis
#70: Stramel
#94: Akey

There's actually quite a few players I like in 3rd round, including Terrance, Akey, Myatovic, Gajan, Minnetian, Lind, Rehkopf & Lardis.
I agree that ASP might be the best dman in the draft

You mean something like Vegas GK with only one PPG player in Eichel and no other elite talent? I would love to have that.
Mark Stone has been PPG since 2017.
Yes, absolutely.

I think the appeal is the offensive package. He might have the best offensive tools out there after Bedard and Michkov.

The rest tho needs a lot of polishing.
Theres no way he has the best offensive package out of Carlsson, Benson, Fantilli and heck, even Sale and Cristall.

Button will not yield on Eduard Sale.
Well Sale was good in every international games hes been in, and thats the only thing Craig watches, so...
There is a clear cut top 5 and reinbacher’s in it
I agree but the injury probably takes him out. Frigging needed that 17th man.

We’ll see. Lots of time till draft day. Even if it’s a fairly bad one.

Stupid ex leaf. Not dirty but sandin can go f*** himself regardless.

I watched some playoff footage from Extraliga recently and it changed my opinion on him. I actually didn't like him at all from watching the international games.
You could see the skill level in the IIHF. The level of talent is insane, Im not even scared to say he rivals the two phenoms in skills. He literally blows the door off Carlsson/Smith/Benson/etc on a tools basis.

How was he in the PO? Ive catched a few in the EL and anytime he really pushed the pace offensively, kind of like Michkov did in Sochii, but he used about 35% of the ice, lol. And the thing is? Hes skilled enough to just do that and make the NHL. Im not certain if its somewhat dictated by coaching or just himself.

The hope would be that he figures it out though.

I liked what I saw. I went into it expecting to hate his game even more, but it was actually the opposite. Actually managed to win some puck battles, and use some more projectable puck protection, in addition to the moments of offensive brilliance.
