Knowing how Cooley performed this year, would you go Dvorsky over him ?

There is less risk by a lot after having seen a D+1, but I still think Dvorksy has more potential.

Not sure what I do as a GM, as I didn't watch Cooley enough.

I tend to watch U17-U18 the most, hence why we are in June and I'm praying for Hlinka to start tomorrow haha

I watch the players when they get around 23 to verify that the pattern recognition is working or not and adjust, but in between I try to not look at them too much.

Cooley performed well, but had 2 great wingers on his line all year in Snuggerud and Knies, NCAA isnt a pro league, thats midway between junior and AHL. Cooley, just as Smith, has had ideal conditions to perform so far, we will know what he is really made of once he reaches the pro level.

I prefer Dvorsky to Cooley personally, smarter, stronger and much better shooting skills. Cooley plays at a higher pace and is the most dynamic skater. Its close but I prefer Dvorsky's upside.

Would your assessment be a better Lundell as a prospect and upside? I know you were very high on him at the time.

Consider three years from now, three years of experience and development for all the young players and prospects, seeing who to keep, who can be moved. Then drop in a Michkov. We go from a 'promising' team to a 'must watch' team.
All things being equal #2-5 have the same odds of being 'busts' so why not go with the best talent?
Mitchkov was already the Russian team‘s all star at the WJC U-20 in December 2021 when they played the exhibition with Wright and Bedard. Bedard was still fighting for a better spot in the lineup,

My feeling, is if Michkov played in this year‘s WJC he’d have been head to head with Bedard in scoring which he out scored in the U-18 two years prior. Furthermore, my best guess is he would have blown past Carlsson and Fantilli in the rankings even with the Russian factor and we wouldn’t have been having this discussion about him falling to 5. He would have been Russia’s undisputed offensive beast for a second U-20 in a row.

How influential was he on that team of the season prior? He was directing where players should go on the breakout and was fully in charge of the PP. Unheard of for a player in a major Hockey country 2 seasons before the draft. To put things into perspective, it would have been if Carlsson would have been the undisputed go to guy on the Swedish national team from Game 1 not in this season’s WJC, but the season prior.

It was 5 of 10 that had Slaf 1st overall.
We also don't know how many scouts have Michkov over the others. Also, Bob mentioned many believe Michkov could be picked outside the top 5.
And it was 10 scouts....a miniscule sample size. McKenzie even said another group of 10 scouts might have had Wright with the most votes.

Let's hope the sharks pick michkov so the board doesn't freak out on skipping on a potential superstar
Of even better, they pick Reinbacher so we have choice between smith and Mitchkov. I think most would understand taking smith over Michkov

Based on everything Grier ahas said, it looks like they're primarily focused on BPA regardless of position so I don't see Reinbacher going 4 unless their scouting staff is really in love with the player

Wouldn't be surprised if the Habs take Reinbacher and trade for Dubois.

Sounds like damage control is already coming out in regards to passing on Michkov so... thats lame.

Come on now.

If this is prepping, I would lose all respect in Hughes, because you just don't signify your position, whatever it is, just a month before the draft, just for a question of PR prepping. It seems completely opposite the type of man I see when I look at Hughes. I see a shrewd negociator and planner, not someone who'll let PR overrule him and show his hand. Completely bonkers and people giving in so easily is just a symptom of how real the trauma is, nothing else.

We have talked soooo much about the top 5-10 , can we talk a bit about who would be decent pickups in the later rounds ? I have not much knowledge about 3rd round and on to be honest

If anyone wants to share some of their late round steals and a bit of explanation on it , would be fun to discuss and read it

They are nowhere near the concern potential of Wright, Slaf, Cooley or much of the 2022 class.

Dvorsky and Reinbacher concern me because they haven’t demonstrated offense worthy for a very high first round pick.

Leonard concerns me because he’s never had in his whole life a season where his assists weren’t dwarfed by his goals. He virtually has zero passing game.

I’m also concerned that in any context or competition he’s always out pointed by Perreault and Smith. And that they always score as many goals as Leonard but have a bunch more assists. He’s also visibly less of a skilled stick handler than the two others.

Lol love the kid, doesn’t look intimidated or camera shy like Cooley was last year.
I think it's just a personality thing. Cooley seems much more of a cool kid and calmer demeanour/personality yet he's a silent killer. Cooley has a killer instinct type of vibe. Smith look serious like that but he's a jokester (see his USNDTP videos) and I think he likes the attention. Not a bad thing.

But I prefer Michkov still!

Leonard's goals and assists ratio is fairly balanced, and not similar to Caufield for example which is highly biased towards goals. Smith and Perreault run the PP for the US program, meaning they are fed the puck and they distribute it. As a consequence, they will always get more points, as they get more touches. Leonard plays a different role on the PP, and even at 5vs5 to some extent.

One interesting statistic about Leonard is that he has the highest +/- ratio per game among the three players. So, although they are getting significantly more points, the other two players are on the ice for much more goals against than Leonard. I think this is an important stat, especially in the context where these three guys are oftentimes on the ice together.

Caufield is also a goal scorer like Leonard. But scored a lot more. Also, Caufield had seasons where he out assisted his goals in minor hockey. Leonard, never. Caufield is a skilled stick handler, Leonard less so. Leonard’s passing game is a desert, there’s nothing there. He might be real good one day in the NHL anyways. I would still be scared to death picking him at 5OA.

I hope we can find another badass like Arbs in this draft

Reinbacher played on a pro league. This is tougher to produce for 18 years old guy in those league. Pretty sure Reinbacher would have put the double in the CHL, close to 50 pts + efficient ratio +|-. I would also add that I personnally know 2 guys who had few successful years in the LHJMQ, and they were rejected by Swiss league after their junior career (they finally played Del-2 and Danemark). Then, you can consider the level of the game in Swiss. If a 18 years old guy is playing and to be dominent on a pro league. This is something valuable.

Leonard is a decent passer but his game is about winning 1on1 and outskate, out compete the opponent. These are VERY valuable skills at the NHL level. I think people are sleeping on Leonard because of the tag "safe" associated with him. Somehow the scouting report on him is not that different to a guy like Tkachuk that we passed on because he was a safe pick. You win hockey games with player like him in your team.

Yep, Leonard's passing game may be a work in progress. However, we do have players like Dach and Slafkovsky that appear to be more inclined to pass than shoot, so having a shooter like Leonard on board may balance things up a bit.

Michkov is a very enticing player. However, Leonard would fit like a glove in our organization.
