Columbus picked RD David Jiricek 6th overall last year.
So, Lol.
Don't think they're taking a SWING at 3 on ol Reiny this year fellas..

CBJ is taking a center, they already said as much.

But it would be possible that SJS takes Reinbacher at 4 if they aren't going to take Michkov. I haven't really seen San Jose take a player similar to Smith ever before.

I'm looking forward to McKenzie's next list. Reinbacher will move up once again imo, but what will be interesting are the tidbits from scouts he usually scouts. Like, one said they thought Makar was the number 1 in 2017 or something along those lines. I wonder what they'll say of Reinbacher, Leonard and Dvorsky, the three likely #5.

Columbus should definitely take either fantilli or Carlsson. They need a center badly as KJ looks like a winger and Will Smith has the highest likelihood of being a winger at the NHL based on his game. But if I'm the sharks and know you're going to suck for a few more years at least, I shoot for a superstar and take Michkov. It's such an obvious pick for them and Grier did say he's pretty much solely looking for BPA

Combine dinner invitations will give us an inclination.

2 of 3 dinners were in the discussion for our pick.

Picking Slaf didn't require a public relations intervention as in trading PK, or in this case not picking Michkov.

It's the complete opposite. The issues associated with picking Michkov are already known by everyone. If a team passes on Michkov, it won't exactly surprise the fanbase. Hughes leaking stuff doesn't change anything in terms of pr. The fan base will hate him either way for passing on Michkov.

It's different to last year when the habs had the 1st overall pick in a draft that was held in Montreal. Not picking Wright who was seen as the consensus #1 for several years and who also happened to fill a big need on the habs (center) would be a shocking move that could lead to fans booing their selection, which would result in a complete shitshow.

The habs had the 1st pick and would have lost nothing by leaking that they would pick Slaf, yet they still didn't do it.

On the topic: on the day of the draft, 7 out of 10 considered Slaf BPA over Wright. Today, 100 out of 100 scouts consider Michkov BPA ahead of Leonard, Reinbacher and Dvorsky.

It was 5 of 10 that had Slaf 1st overall.
We also don't know how many scouts have Michkov over the others. Also, Bob mentioned many believe Michkov could be picked outside the top 5.

1) Not picking Michkov despite being the BPA would piss off a considerable portion of the fan base. This is why the PR operation is needed.

2) Nobody was dying on the Wright hill. He was far from being a consensus #1 far before draft day, and Slaf was not a controversial pick to the point that they needed a PR operation. Most people expected one or the other. Acquiring Dach also helped with passing on Wright.

3) Not picking Michkov because of reasons not related to hockey is far trickier. Moreso if he makes a good impression in the upcoming weeks.

4) The contract/war/attitude thing is pretty much debunked at this point, but that's not the reason Molson wont allow the pick, it has never been. And that's why the PR operation is necessary, because fans don't give a rats ass about corporate interests and Molson will never come clean about it.

They will try to convince fans that Michkov has too many question marks when in fact he doesn't. That's what this is all about.

Consider three years from now, three years of experience and development for all the young players and prospects, seeing who to keep, who can be moved. Then drop in a Michkov. We go from a 'promising' team to a 'must watch' team.
All things being equal #2-5 have the same odds of being 'busts' so why not go with the best talent?

FWIW - He did do this analysis.

View attachment 715303
That's a rather superficial analysis. First, on the NYI he missed Eberly (5-10) and Pageau 5-9. On Tampa, he missed Point (drafted 5-9, listed 5-10). Second, it fails to take into account the lack of balance within the key lines such as on Tampa's first line (5-9/10, 5-11, 6). Tampa added size and grit on the bottom lines and it worked well for them.

Then just using the heights along is often misleading as it often fails to account for actual strength of the player. Gally is 5-8 but is so much stronger than a guy like Evans who is 6. Romanov was drafted at 5-11 and change but he is one of the best hitters in the NHL and much bigger players just bounce off him.
Finally, using just the last four years is sort of cherry picking as it excludes teams like NJ which had great PO success with a number of small players sprinkled with a few bigger grinders. Their first line, for example, featured 5-7 Gio, 5-10/11 soft as butter Gomez, and average sized Elias. Or the 09-10 Habs who reached conference final led by 5-7 Gionta, 5-9 Cammi, 5-10/11 Gomez, 5-11 Plec and 5-10 MAB.

Mock draft is different than a BPA ranking.

I’ll settle for even any quote of one single anonymous NHL scout putting one of those players ahead of Michkov as BPA. We have several saying the reverse. Perhaps some anonymous scout will come out before draft day and say Dvorsky will end up a better player than Michkov. As of now, it’s never happened.

I'd do it if Smith is gone and we aren't taking Michkov.. but I don't see a scenario where Arizona agrees to this.
If another team behind Arizona offer a trade up with the CH (Wash (8), Phil (7), Detroit(9)), you can show Arizona the trade offer and ask for them to give more or they will lose Michkov. That's called leverage.

Nobody in the top 8 has "concerning flaws" this year - flaws yes, but the degree is much less than last year.
We'll have to agree to disagree. I find Dvorsky (2-way second liner vibes), Reinbacher (low ceiling), and Leonard (Not big enough to play his game at the NHL level) to be concerning for various reasons.

Not saying I wouldn't love it if this would be a real thing.
But if it's really the case, I believe the Jarmo Kekaleinen experience has about run it's course in Columbus.

The PR will change nothing. The fans won't be any less pissed because something gets leaked about the habs not trusting SKA's development ability or that Michkov needs to improve defensively.

Wright was the consensus #1 for the fans, which is what matters in regards to pr.

Dach was acquired after the pick was already made.

What upcoming weeks? He's not going to the combine.

The war remains a real potential problem for bringing Michkov.

If the habs don't pick Michkov, it will have 100% to do with the contract/war issues.
What other reason would there be to not pick Michkov?

They will try to convince fans that Michkov has too many question marks when in fact he doesn't. That's what this is all about.

Literally, nobody will be convinced that MIchkov shouldn't be the pick because of his hockey-related question marks. Whoever gets picked instead will have far more hockey-related question marks.

About number 2, my recollection was that over 90% of Habs fans were all in on Wright and that they even cheered him on like he was the pick around draft day. That and some posters here almost threatening to cut their veins if they went with someone else like Slaf. There was quite a bit of cope once Wright fell to 4.
