Fantilli had 35 assists this season at Michigan. I highly doubt they were all secondary or due to rebounds off shots.

I hope people aren’t saying he “doesn’t use his teammates well” off a small sample size of seeing him on the 4th line for about two weeks at the WC.

Everything I’ve read about him over the past year mentions hockey IQ and play making as a strength.

Actually I watched a lot of his Michigan games and I would say many of the assists he got were rebounds of shots or broken plays due to him aggressively driving the net, challenging defenders, ect. Of course he had some passes too, but he did not set teammate up, a La Getzlaf, very often.

I guess this is where I see hockey IQ perhaps in the wrong or incomplete light. If it leads to scoring, perhaps creating chaos can be the high hockey IQ play.

what are people basing Fantilli going back to school from? That he’s not ready? The only way I see him going back is if he wants to be like Owen Power - wanting to win a college championship before coming over. (Or if he has a god-awful training camp)

I know (to me) it’s super close. I flip flop between Carlsson and Fantilli each day.

If he’s in training camp that means he’s signed a contract and can’t go back to college.

People bitching about mild criticism which was tossed out in comparison to one of the best playmakers of his generation towards a prospect who isn't ours yet. And they can't even get the quote right.
Just to be clear, my comment was a general one. It wasn't in regards to the Getzlaf comparison. I didn't even know that's who you were referring to until I looked back at some of the previous posts.

Seems like I've seen a lot of criticism of his hockey IQ, or being a one man show, since the WC games happened, and was just stating my observation based on that relative to everything I had seen reported about him throughout this season.

That he has holes in his game or skating or strength that he feels would be easier to work on at the college level with its lighter schedule/workload, or that he wants to lead his team to a national championship.

Also, the fact that Fantilli has said that he’s undecided if he’s going back to college, and wants to consult with his agent, current coaches, personal trainers, and management of the team that drafted him to decide what’s best. He’s on record as saying he may go back to college, I’m not understanding why anyone would say it’s a foregone conclusion one way or the other.

Besides Fantilli stating he hasn't made a decision of going pro or staying at Michigan for his sophomore year? Here's a quote from that article link:

"I know there are still areas of my game I have to polish, and living on a college campus for another year helps you grow as a person, helps you grow as a man, and helps you mature," Fantilli said. "There's absolutely positives to both sides of it, but I haven't made a decision."

Another factor is he gets to be around his brother for another year before the winds of life whisks you away in different directions.

Here's a Michigan coach on Fantilli's future, which sounds very diplomatic:

"We would obviously love to have Adam back but, whatever Adam decides, it's his career and we're fully supportive and he'll always be a part of Michigan," Michigan coach Brandon Naurato told the "NHL Draft Class" podcast March 22. "That said, guys like Zach Werenski (Columbus Blue Jackets), Owen Power (Buffalo Sabres), Matty Beniers (Seattle Kraken), Luke Hughes (New Jersey Devils) and Quinn Hughes (Vancouver Canucks) ... they each played two years of college hockey. I think everyone's path is different. Adam needs to do what's best for him.
"I'll give him my thoughts and I don't think it's never wrong to be overripe, but I think Adam can handle it with his skill set and the type of person that he is, and his work ethic."

Although Hughes was in the same draft class as Power, Beniers, and Johnson, Hughes didn't play for Michigan until next season, 2021-22. Hughes could have gone pro after one season, especially after Power, Beniers, and Johnson would leave the program. Instead, Hughes returned for a second season with lots of new faces.

There's that word again, "overripe". Ducks GM Verbeek prefers prospects being overripe.

I feel like a lot of people think that Verbeek is lying when he says that he’s going to overtake prospects and not rush the rebuild.
He can’t be lying because he’s never said this. I thought this board went through this already with McTavish and might’ve learned a lesson or two by now.

There’s a massive difference between guys picked deeper in drafts and guys picked at #2 and are heralded as one of the best prospects in recent years. There’s an even bigger difference when they’re 6’2 195.

I don't remember exactly what he said anymore but whatever it was you'd have to think blowing up a bunch of NCAA records means you're done baking. He seems physically ready. If he loses confidence or needs an adjustment he can go to San Diego for a while, like our last NCAA star did.

I think when you win the Hobey Baker as a freshman, that kind of shows that you should probably be working on the holes in your game in the pros, while getting paid, with a coach who is also paid to work on the holes in your game.

If I’m Michigans coach and Fantilli comes back, I’m going for a National championship and running the offense through him, not trying to coach the hero puck out of him.

If he wants to stay to grow as a man, and mature as a person, then that’s fine, I get it. My guess is he’s being a modest kid with those quotes, and not outright declaring he’s NHL ready, but saying he’ll take advice of whoever drafts him.

Pretend for a moment that Bedard and Michkov weren't in this draft: Fantilli would be seen as the 70% likely #1 overall pick and that the consensus pick at #2 is Carlsson with a small minority pushing fot Will Smith. The debate at 2 would be that Will Smith has more dynamic qualities vs the IQ and size of Carlsson.
I still take Carlsson over Smith, Will is terrible defensively, mediocre sized and isn't speedy either but i think some said he's like an upgraded Zegras with a better shot which would be a heck of a good player if he hits his ceiling.

It’s also weird because during the whole McTavish debate even everyone on Team Overbake talked about how they’d rather see McTavish in San Diego and how unfortunate the CHL rule is. I would think even the most over cautious person would just rather a guy of that calibre go to the AHL.

If Zach Benson starts to fall ala krebs I hope we seriously consider moving our second rounders to go get him.

Cristall has a chance to be there at 33 as well. Would love to take that swing.

This draft is deeper with intriguing forward talent than I can remember in my ten years of doing these mock drafts. It really seems like one of those years like 03 where we'll see very few misses early, stars popping up throughout the first and at least a few more throughout the subsequent rounds.

Dan Marr seems prone to hyperbole...

The comment on Morin especially, I really like the kid but that's a pretty big outlier of an opinion. Most seem to have him as more of late first to mid second type prospect.

Morin does have poise very far beyond his years. Saw him playing as an underager and he looks like one of those guys who could manage the game sitting in a chair.

Benson should go top 15. I don't think any combination of our 2nd's (including all 3) are enough to move into the top 20 but a Gibson trade for Pittsburgh's 1st at 14 would get it done. I like others at that spot including Honzek and Simashev though.

Cristall is a highly polarizing player. Great junior stats but lots of people are worried that his skills won't translate. plus he's small and not particularly fast. But others love him so it'll be interesting to see where he goes. Late 1st at best is my guess.

Marr probably sees more NA prospects than Euro. His scouts think differently.

iirc, didn't Carlsson grow up with a stuttering problem? pretty impressive to overcome the stuttering problem along with knowing at least two different languages.
You know not everyone is a monolingual American, right? It is mandatory to have not only one, but two foreign languages at school in almost every single European country. Hell, I had had Latin, English and Spanish at school and just for shits and giggles also took up some classes in Dutch, Italian, Swedish and Finnish at university - and I am by no means the only one who speaks 3+ languages fluently or 5+ languages at a low level.
