Yeah i know its early but 2022 draft discussion started pretty quickly too last year.
So far its #1 Bedard and #2 Mitchkov but after that what are players you are interested in for the Ducks ?
I don't see Bedard falling like Wright did at all. Who will be this years Slaf and Cooley ?

Blanket warning to everyone - the season is over, the active tanking is over, and everyone needs to remember how to get along.

Polite discussions of different viewpoints is fine. Assertions as to who is a good fan, who is a bad fan, and most particularly trolling behavior is going to result in thread bans and warnings. The vast majority of posters here are great about this. There are a few of you, on both sides of this issue, who are trying to start things, and I would advise you to carefully consider if that snarky comment you just made is worth being your last post in a thread. I would advise the folks who think that making an even snarkier response to make that same assessment. Neither of your posts will be seen by anyone else for long regardless.

It is perfectly fine to not understand how anyone could root for the team to lose. It is perfectly fine to not understand how losing has strong benefits to the franchise king term. There are gaping holes in BOTH positions, that may be discussed and debated…POLITELY.

We are all Ducks fans. Time to remember that and stop being at each other’s throats.

Michkov and Carlsson (and Fantilli) are all 04s, so they were all too old to play in the U-18s anyway. But I agree with the sentiment.
Damn I didn't know that. Well I think you still have to look at the fact that Carlsson and Fantilli are still being slotted in to play for their men's national teams, and Michkov would have been there if allowed to play. That's not a common occurrence for draft eligible prospects, unless they're viewed as outstanding and can handle play against men.

Interesting to note that at the U18 tournament, 14 of Smith's 20 points came against Latvia, Norway, Finland, and Switzerland who finished 8, 9, 5, and 6 respectively in the tournament. He scored 3 points (all goals) against Slovak who finished 4th and 1 point against each of Czechia and Sweden who finished 2nd and 7th. He's a great talent but he (and his entire line) feasted against some pretty bad teams.

The good part is we have versatility with Z and Terry, they can play with either Fantilli, Carlsson, or McTavish. If one of the draft picks ends up being a better C, Z can move to wing. Carlsson-McTavish on a line would be hard to handle though... give them another big guy that can move (then definitely need to add size to Z/Terry line).

Was Tverdovsky really thought that high of? I wasn't as in to hockey back then. I thought Ryan wasn't talked of much at 2, I remember everyone thinking Jack Johnson was the consensus #2. Ryan was ranked around 4-5?
yes he was. pre-draft he seriously was being compared to bobby orr. i remember reading one exec saying something like "i watched bobby orr and this is bobby orr" (in regards to tverdovsky) and yes, the fact that he was the main piece going to the jets for teemu also shows how highly thought of he was

as for ryan, you're right. i do remember johnson going 2nd in most mocks that year with pouliot going 3rd and ryan 4th. burke did go off the board a bit for that one, but ryan was definitely seen as a big time prospect at the time

Smith over Carlson, wow. I really don't think there is any way we do that.

Wheeler's after WJC-18 draft ranking had thoughts of ranking Smith over Carlsson. Pronman has Smith in the same tier as Carlsson.

I love Smith's electric offense, but I'm unsure to put him in the same level as Carlsson. Smith is centering Leonard and Perreault. His wingers usually do all the heavy lifting on the defensive end and that allows Smith to hang around the blue line for a faster transition breakout. All three linemates are going to Boston College.

Smith is very Zegras-like such that they both have electric offense, but their two-way game needs work. In international junior games, Zegras would mostly be playing wing. At the 2019 WJC-18, Jack Hughes centered Zegras. At the 2020 WJC-20, Jack Drury would be his centerman if Zegras played above the 4thline. At the 2021 WJC-20, Zegras played wing to Turcotte. Seeing the success of Zegras at the NHL level might be the reason for elevating Smith's ranking into the same level or higher than Carlsson.

Fortunately, we do have comparisons of two types of centers in Zegras and McTavish in Anaheim. McTavish has a better two-way game with a much larger frame than Zegras. Similarly, Carlsson has a better two-way game with a much larger frame than Smith. I think Carlsson is further along in his development than McTavish in their D+0 stages b/c this is Carlsson's second season in the SHL. That high end scoring for Smith is pretty hard not to overlook, though.

Of course, there's recency bias too. McKenzie, Pronman, and Wheeler put out their rankings after the WJC-18, with Smith leading the way in goals scored (9 goals) and scoring (20 points) for team USA and the tournament. The top three scorers for team USA were Smith with 20 points, Perreault with 18 points, and Leonard with 17 points; all three were the top-3 scorers for the tournament. Leonard turned 18 on Jan 21st and Smith turned 18 on Mar 17th. Carlsson probably missed the WJC-18 cutoff date since his birth date is on Dec 26th. Who knows how well Sweden would have done at the WJC-18 with Carlsson on the roster as the fourth highest scorer at the tourney was Swede was C/W Stenberg with 16 points and how different the thoughts on Carlsson? That's the only way we get an apples to apples comparison.

Bedard with either of Zegras/McTavish would be nasty, but Carlsson with Terry would also be really cool.

Only downside of the latter is that I don't think Z/McTavish would work well together, but maybe?

I'd rather put Z-Carlsson together b/c Z needs that big body to do the dirty work, but also have that offensive prowess to think on the same level with Z.

Yeah, then Z would probably have to go to more of a goal scoring mentality than playmaking. From what (little) I have read, Carlsson seems to be a significantly better playmaker than scorer? Zegras was the same way, but has developed that goal scoring a lot since being drafted.

I think Carlsson is a two-way scorer. He looks like that at U-20 competitions: 15 games, 10 g +7a = 17 points, and +12 rating. In a men's league, he's still working his way up the ranks to being the man. Carlsson just turned 18 years old in late December.

Both have hands that "move like jagger". They don't have to score with a slap shot all the time, but they can deke the goaltender out of position easily to score in tight... which what Carlsson will probably do more than Zegras.

With both Z and Carlsson being two-way scorers, it makes them difficult to defend against. I just like the fact that Carlsson's big body and possession control will keep the puck in the offensive zone longer. Plus, his two-way game should also help in defensive puck retrievals better than Zegras.

We're going to be losing Rico soon and Carlsson is the closest prospect to Rico, has offense and can be defensively aware. Bedard and Fantilli are offensive dynamos right now compared to Carlsson, but their defense still needs polishing compared to Carlsson.

Oh ok, makes sense. Then yeah, those two would probably work well. Some of what I was reading sounded like Getzlaf level of aversion to scoring (which didn't track with his highlights, especially recent ones). The Ducks can definitely have some size down the middle in a few years... Carlsson/Fantilli, McTavish, Gaucher (if he's not playing the Kunitz role higher up the lineup).

Isn't Smith more in the Zegras mold? I saw someone in the prospects forum compare him to a shorter Spezza. while supremely talented, stylistically i'm not sure he'd be ideal given what we have already.

Pretty much. More of a scorer than Zegras. Not sure he'll stick at C in the NHL, seems to be pretty lazy defensively and not a guy that's going to get into the corners and battle for pucks or anything.

If we have zero interest in Michkov, I don't see a world where we draft Smith over Carlsson at 3OA. The only thing Carlsson lacks really is first step/top speed, but with his hands, size, and creativity it isn't something that's going to hurt him much.

I don't know if Smith is necessarily a Zegras clone but he is similar in the creativity. I just don't think where he's at now he's on track to adapt well. Everyone calls him this super high IQ guy and he's definitely crafty with the puck and has good vision but he doesn't have the best pace in the offensive zone and his stick handling is a lot slower and wider than Zegras'. I think once he gets to the NHL he'll have a lot less time and space to do what he does against his current level of competition. That's not to say he can't adapt but I think Zegras' game was better suited to make the transition. We'll see how he does in the NCAA and how he grows his game but I don't think he's deserving of being ranked over Carlsson and Michkov from a pure hockey analysis standpoint. But I don't get paid to scout so I could be dead wrong.

DO NOT want Smith, let him slap people around in SJ or Montreal.

I'm hoping it's Arizonas scouts that talked to TSN, they are the ones who had Soderstrom ranked top3 in 2019 lmao.

The Tankathon sim suddenly became obsessed with putting Montreal at first or in the top 3… what’s up with that?
I seem to get results in bunches. One day one type, another day another, etc. Might be somehing in the algorythm
