He's had a healthy amount of disdain from the nhl prospects forum.

Here, for instance.

He's certainly an interesting guy because of his ability to generate scoring opportunities. I see the concerns about him overstaying his welcome on a pinch or if he forechecks deep into the zone and the puck watching is real in the games I've seen him in. I don't see issues with skating that some of the pro list compiler folks have hinted at but again, I'm not looking at breaking down his form, just going by how he gets to where he needs to be. But there is a lot to work with there. With the Sabres light quantity of blueline prospects, going for a guy who has the offensive side of the game down is an option, though it again seems like loading up on a skillset they already have in other, more advanced players, even if he's a RD.

Also, that "do not draft" thread... :shakehead So much of it is about preference rather than any knowledge of actual reasons why someone wouldn't be on a team's list. (Also of note, almost every time there is someone who winds up whispered about being on one of those, there is a deeper issue afoot rooted in off-ice or non-hockey stuff.)

Having some afternoon coffee and watching Sale in the Czech play-in round. Edit - never saw a shift, very annoying stream.

Unless we win the draft or somehow pick top 5 please pick a defender. I am suspecting around 10-12 so please a defenseman. This time around BPA might now be the best choice if its a forward. Pick the best defenseman available.

Drafting for need in the 1st round is how organizations get into big-time trouble.

There isn't much in the way of mid-first round defensemen in this draft.

No they don't. To try and prove drafting for need and not seeing the draft pick 2-3 years later and that it wasn't the best player available at the time is nearly impossible to prove. If you are making such a statement please at least provide some sort of statistical proof please.

Teams draft for need all the time when there is a tie with two prospects of course the team is drafting the one they feel meets their needs best.

Please provide teams and evidence they drafted for team need and the passing up on the better player is later on a player that would have turned the organization around and it got that organization into big trouble.

That is what you are implying. On top of that best player available is just ones opinion. Have you not seen the draft rankings were players can rank into 30 different spots depending on the scouting report,

However, many hockey industry experts would argue that it is difficult to select the best available player, usually at the age of 18 when their development and maturity is questionable. Wagner believes that the “…best player available is a fiction. Teams at the draft really have no idea who the best player will be when they pick. They’re taking an educated guess based on their scouts, statistics, and overall draft philosophy. It’s why we constantly see articles redrafting the first round of every draft. When the Canucks picked Cody Hodgson in 2008, he was the best player available, but he wasn’t actually the best player available. That turned out to be Erik Karlsson.” - The Hockey Writers.

You make a statement as its fact and completely dismiss that drafting for need is a strategy means you haven't taken looking into both strategies objectively.

Reinbacher could be NHL ready in 24-25 just do one year in Rochester and they could use him next season

He’ll be available and we’ll take a 5’10 winger.
There are a few defensemen that could also be considered the best player available between 10-12. By the 10th pick the BPA can be 3-4 different players depending on perspective.

Nope BPA or bust right Zman?

You got yourself so in a tizzy to "obliterate" my first statement that you're completely glossing over the 2nd half of my post:

As of right now, the ONLY defenseman I see that I'd be even interested in taking in our likely slot (10-14) is Reinbacher, and he's likely gone by then. The way I see it right now, we'd be absolutely forcing it by restricting ourselves to defensemen as you suggest. So yes, BPA please. It's likely to be a forward....because that's where the best players play in the range we're likely to pick.

I like Lind as a pain-in-the-ass sort of player we could really use. If Musty could turn into a mean and motivated SOB he could be Tkachuk level.

ASP will be available in that range but do the Sabres really need another sub 6' defensively mediocre defenseman?
Its unfortunate how the draft is looking for defensemen. If Reinbacher is there around 10-12 I would take him. Reminds me of how Bischel moved up the draft board because the draft was thin on defense at the time and even though he wasn't the best player available at the time he was taken.

Personally, I'm not remotely interested in ASP. I only see Reinbacher and ASP as guys who could remotely be in consideration for our pick (among defensemen)......and I'm not touching ASP.

Yep, that's exactly what's going to happen. I'd LOVE Reinbacher at our pick.....hell, I wouldn't mind a mild trade up (say to 8 or 9) for him.

But I'm more looking for bigger forwards who at least try to play with a bit of an edge.....that seems much more in line with the talent we're looking at in the low teens.
