Just for fun, here's what the NHL mock draft folks are saying now...

*Tankathon.com: At #13...Axel Sandin Pellikka/D/Skellefetea AIK (5'11"/181)
*MyNHLDraft.com: At #17...Matthew Wood/RW-LW/UConn(6'3"/194)
*Lines.com: At #14...Matthew Wood
*Bleacher Report: At #12...Axel Sandin Pellikka
*TheHockeyWriters.com: At #14...Sandin Pellikka
*Yahoo's Ian Kennedy: At #14...Sandin Pellikka

Seeing what is being mentioned about Pellikka's style of play...he's a player Buffalo does NOT need right now. JMO.

A guy like ASP is 3-4-5 years out. Even if he hits what he's supposed to be.....we STILL won't need a guy like ASP even in 3-4-5 years. If we need a guy like him, that means that either Dahlin or Power have moved on and I don't even want to entertain the thought of such a scenario.

Reinbacher is the ONLY defenseman that interests me in the 10-15 range in this draft, and he's likely to go in the 5-10 range.

I agree, ASP is not what the Sabres need. Also agree that Reinbacher is a good pick in that range. The only other dman in that range I would take is Simashev, who I believe will turn out to be the best dman in his draft class.

Borrowing these from the Draft Board thread:

He's not Seider physical, but I like how he engages to pin out his man. He can get caught chasing but so can just about every defenseman, especially young ones. But there is a lot to like about his game. I still don't think he's there when Buffalo finally reaches the podium.

DBut (50 in white) and Simashev (26 in white) are playing in the playoffs -

Boom!! Simashev scores

Boom!! Simashev scores
Game winner baby!

Honestly, I have a hard time gleaning anything from these games since MHL looks nothing like the game I'm used to, but DB50 and Simashev look really calm, confident, and effective every shift. I'm usually a pretty big Russian factor guy, but this is the year for Russian prospects for me.

This has been the game I've liked DB50 the most in what I've watched of him.

I am still in OT. I must be behind on the feed.

Maybe it didn't count? Or it didn't go in? I'm at work with the sound off and it looked like he scored in the last minute of regular time? I thought that ended the game so I turned it off! Jeez, I wonder what happened.

His shot must not have went in like it looked like? Did it get called back? Either way, amazing play. He's jumping up into the play quite a bit in the MHL, and doing it quite casually and effectively. Not sacrificing defense.

Ha! He ended up with an apple on the OT winner. I hope that one sticks!

Yeah, it was close and the net bulged but didn't go in. He just set up the game winner at 4-on-4 with a pass to #66 Akhunov. DBut also on the ice for the GWG.

Simashev is growing on me. Too bad he is a LHD. He’s like Sammy with offensive upside. If we pick around 15, we could do a lot worse. Not sure if he’s willing to escape mother Russia early or how he slots in with our top 4 LHDs set but he adds a presence that I think we could use back there.

If we are picking 11/12/13/14 I just don't think defense is the play by making the pick. Trade the pick? Or take best available forward? In no particular order, we should be able to choose from 2 of the following in that range - Cristall/Dvorsky/Leonard/Moore/Yager. As loaded as we are at forward, those are all players that could be 6-10 in some drafts. It would just take a team to be thrilled that one of them dropped to our spot and we could have a trade for a D if it's the right team.
