Yeah, seems like they go really early - Fantilli may have some of that as a pro since he does a lot of "through" instead of "around" in his game - and plenty of teams mess up their pick around 6-10 with guys like Virtanen, Kassian, Beach, Boucher, and Dylan McIlrath or Duncan Siemans on defense or as you point out, they are guys outside the first who put it together (Knies for Toronto vs. Boucher for the Sens). It seems like it's hard to find from the later part of the top 10 down into the 30's.

Maybe Meier and Crouse (though he was panned at the time before being moved and finding his game in Arizona) in 2015 but since then it's been pretty barren at the top of things.
Good point(s). Landeskog is another high pick, but I thought he was risky at the time going that high.

It regularly seems to be the hardest thing to find since size and truculence seem to get over-valued yet remain hard to find or develop those guys into regular NHLers. Just looking around at some of the harder guys in the league to play against physically, Jeannot, Hathaway and Acciari were all UDFA and most took some time to come to their finished form.

It's hard to look at a kid in his draft year and see someone who is going to run through an opponent, leaving human wreckage behind who can do so without failing expectations and the wear it puts on the body. It takes something for these guys to do this stuff and sometimes that's the point that they were overlooked in the draft or not considered by everyone before some team gave them a chance. Drive and luck have something to do with it. Heck, John Hayden has the profile of a guy who could've been similar to say Acciari or Hathaway but did it's also possible they wind up being another AHLer plugging along, hoping for a break.

So that second round, if they keep the picks some folks to perhaps look at:

Oliver Bonk (may not last out of the first round)
Maxim Strbak (USHL, going to MSU next year)
Beau Akey (OHL)
Tom Willander (Rogle J20)

Tristan Bertucci (LHD, but I like him from limited viewing)

Just tossing out some ideas.

I’m starting to think Sale could slip out of the top 10. Highly doubt he’ll fall to us but if he does is that a no brainer? Wasn’t he Kulich’s teammate in international play?

I don’t know what to make of Sale, but if he slides out of the top 10, he should be a real option since we’ll be picking around 12.

Is he like a center version of Quinn?

A bit more vanilla, perhaps "safe" would be a way to describe him. Really strong defensive game and not yet confident in the offensive side of things? I've seen him a few times against Winnipeg and he's got more skill than I think even he knows. (This game was a good one for viewing him and Savoie - WHL Network ). And that's not a knock, he's really good defensively already so it's possible that should continue into the next level where he might be a strong middle-six pivot. Some of the public scout folks throw around comps that make me uncomfortable (how can they compare a 18-year old, late birthday kid to one of the best 2-way centers of my lifetime with a straight face and not be setting him up to disappoint, right?), but he has a high floor and might have a high ceiling to go with it.

Not a personal favorite, just trying to get more things out in front of people to view so we have a bit more info before the team makes their pick (heck, IF they make that pick).

If we are at pick 13 I'd trade down to 16. If they like Simashev. If not I guess best center available.

It much more depends on who is around to trade down and what another team wants. Same with trading up - situational.

And if they trade out of the first round completely to fix a roster issue for the NHL team, that's cool too.

Watched Minn vs U of Mich last night.

Fantastic game. Lots of stand outs.

Fantilli wasn't one of them.

Started the ball rolling for McGroarty's 2nd...and that's about it.

I can’t remember the last time I knew this little about the NHL draft this late. I honestly hope we trade our picks or failing that, force RHD and/or forwards with size/strength.

I wouldn't mind if they look to find some solutions in trade. Trade down or trade out are certainly options and it's not picking in the mid-teens this year is anything more than the usual, average looking NHL draft.

Brindley was certainly all over the ice when I was watching. He had key plays on both of McGroarty's goals though I don't think he got an assist on the first (he drove the puck in on the entry and cleared the space that Fantilli stepped into for his shot to be blocked and come out to the point).

If only he wasn't micro sized.

I wonder if they would consider taking a double OA like Connor Punnett from Barrie. That lad plays a pretty hard game.

Welp, I had been consciously staying away from thinking about the draft too much while the Sabres had meaningful games in March, but after todays debacle I guess it's time to start thinking about it.

We're currently what, drafting 12th? How low do you honestly think we'll go?

We can go as low as 10th. I think its likely actually
Yeah the 8th and 9th worst teams have 65 pts, so we probably don't get caught by either of them. 10th in is reach though!!

Benson or Sale could slip to 10th. Even though they aren't the droids we are looking for, tough to pass up either of them if available. Reinbacher will be gone. Will be TOTALLY MAD FURIOUS ANGRY if we pick Cristall or Pellikka. I guess any of the other guys will be fine. I think best case scenario is a team sees Benson or Sale there at 10 and there's a trade. But Adams ain't trading the pick.

Benson or Sale is a homerun our pick.

Benson adds to our assortment of little skilled men but he is a Savoie type game breaker.

They’re on the same line mostly now so throw Kulich on the other wing and watch them dominate.

I like Sale a lot too. I’d be over the moon if they picked him up. He’s also very familiar with Kulich obviously.

I pray to the draft gods for Reinbacher. He’d be an absolutely amazing partner for Power and is NHL ready in a year or two.
