Sucks that Barlow got hurt and won’t get his crack at 50 goals. I bet he would’ve hit it.

He’s an interesting one for me. His shot is really the only thing that stands out. He’s big and strong and a decent skater. His positioning is really good and helps him be a good PKer. He’s not really mean or overly physical but he doesn’t shy away. He’s not a net crashing power forward but he’s got the frame and gumption to get good positioning and protect the puck when he has to.

There’s a lot to like but he’s overall pretty vanilla apart from the shot. He’s an extremely likable kid in interviews. Tons of energy. And being a 200+ lb 17 year old with a full beard and a very puppy dog excitement is pretty funny. Especially with his being “cross eyed”(?) or “lazy eyed”(?) not sure what the term is. But he’s very endearing on camera, anyway.

You look at him, and you see his goal totals, and you assume you’re going to see this big bull on the ice. This like intense force of nature. But I haven’t seen that. He mostly just above average at most things, with a really good shot, and very smart positional instincts.

He’s like if Radim Vrbata had the physical appearance of Zack Kassian but still just kinda played like Radim Vrbata, despite looking like Zack Kassian.
Barlow is on the tail end of those 12 players that are in that 4th tier. I'm hoping he's not our selection, I'm hoping for Honzek with the Ottawa selection.

I remember really liking tyson Jost and Jake Virtanen because of their shots. What history has told me is that you need more at the NHL level than just a shot.

Has anybody noticed that Michkov's hype has dwindled? This guy is Bedard level good and should be the 2nd guy off the board no questions asked. If we get him I will be ecstatic.
The way it sounds teams are scared with all this Russian crap going on. He may be great but if I'm the Coyote's and with the situation we are in he would be an easy pass for me. Mind you, I have never been a big Russian player supporter.

I think I made a mistake in my post.

Let me rephrase; despite Barlow’s mature physical tools, burly appearance and gaudy goal scoring numbers, I see him as a fairy boring, cerebral player who’s positional awareness and smarts are actually his top asset, despite what one might assume just looking at the surface.

That’s why I was saying he plays like Vrbata, who I once said would still be a valuable player even if he never scored any goals.

But that’s not an entirely accurate comp because Barlow applies more forechecking pressure. But it’s not in a crushing defenseman in the corner kinda way. More like a Christian Fischer type. Busy and strong and in the right spots.

The point of my post is that he’s not really the nasty power forward you might think based on his picture and his stat line. And also his shot isn’t jaw dropping. He doesn’t have a Guenther style laser. He’s more about getting into then right spots and piling up goals.

Perlini too
Kind of the anti-Perlini, honestly.

Perlini too
Perlini had all the tools. Skating, shot, size. But he just couldn't put it all together for some reason. AZ was going to trade that pick to Calgary to eat Ribeiro's contract (buyout) if Rebeiro would have agreed to it and if Perlini (who was 1 or 8 guys on AZ's list that they viewed to be potential stars) was already taken.

How can I remember this stuff but asked me what I was doing 3 mins ago.

Krebs case?
Nobody wants a bad case of Krebs.

I think Barlow is a lot smarter than those guys. Much better instincts and positioning.
You look at him (and that lumberjack beard) and you think immediately power forward. You want him to be physically dominant driving the net and he is "just" smart with hands.

Exactly what I was trying to say but with 100x more words. Lol.

I’m not enamored with him or anything, but if BA and his staff pick him with the Ottawa pick, I’d be intrigued and excited.

I feel like Reinbacher is our destiny. I’m not sitting here hoping for Reinbacher. Not at all. But I just can’t shake the feeling that we are definitely getting this kid with our 1st pick.

most of the mock drafts that I play around with online I usually end of with Reinbacher and Bensen as my picks. If you want Reinbacher he likely needs to be taken with our first pick.

That’s what I meant. I feel like we’re going to take Reinbacher with our 1st pick. I also don’t think he goes any later than 8th overall. I think we’re picking 7th or 8th.

Watching some older Owen Sound games from this season. The Hamilton broadcast crew keeps talking about how much Barlow is like McTavish. I can see it. Makes sense. He’s missing some of that dynamism. But they’re similar.

Also, gotta say, I still love Servac Petrovsky. I wanted him as high as the 2nd or 3rd round last draft. He fell to the 6th. I’m still a big fan. Fantastic brains+motor combination.

In terms of my undercover, sleeper favorites last draft that got drafted way later than I felt they should, Jake Sloan out in Tri City got completely passed over last draft, much to my shock and dismay. He still looks good this season. I still want to take him in the 4th round. Just like last season. He’s listed at 6’4 215lbs and is a RHS C who wins half his draws, is putting up a point per game, will drop the gloves, and is a nice, well-rounder player without many weaknesses.

After Barlow ripped an absolute missile on the PP the Hamilton guys were talking about how he plays like Kaliyev did on the PP. It’s nice to hear the away broadcasters comparing him to some of their favorite and best players from their own team in recent history.

Barlow forces a turnover from Okitundu, goes hard to the inside, one hand on his stick while he uses the free arm to push off the big defender, protecting his puck, then he looks off the goalie and snaps an complete no-look for the goal. Skates by his bench for fist bumps, but circles back around to grin ear to ear and give Okitundu a cross eyed wink. Such a troll goal.

How do you guys view the production of the USNTDP players like Smith, Perrault, and Leonard? They are on historic pace with Matthews, Hughes, Keller, and Caufield. Is this a product of their talent or rather a combination of coaching/system/linemates/opponents? Smith has what…100 points? Hard to ignore.

I don't think Smith is as good as Cooley. Not as dynamic of a player despite the points.
