The good news is that this is the deepest draft since 2015. This draft is way better than last years that it's not even funny.
You mean the year we picked Strome? Regarded as a blue chipper. Boston had picks 13,14 and 15 that year. Two of those were busts. They could have had Barzal, Connor and Chabot. Having picks is nice, but never a sure thing.

Meh Strome hasn't been a bad player tbh. He has 50 pts this year. I wouldn't consider him a bust. This draft has at least 20 guys that I think will be impactful NHL players within the first 50 picks. We got three cracks at it to hit on at least one guy.

It's fine only getting one 1st. but what not is fine is not getting a good prospect because we were too broke to take on money.
So you would have preferred Björnfot + LA's 1st (24-28 range) + LA's 2nd instead of the deal we got from Ottawa? That's your first and a prospect with cap dump of Petersen.

Did I say that? If we would have taken Petersen I would think Clarke becomes available. I would have wanted Clarke and Kaliyev or Durzi or some other roster player, plus a second rounder for Chych. If Peterson was the dump so be it. It's not like it would be the first time we took on a goalie struggling. We have no idea what happened behind those closed doors. All hindsight anyway, as BA thought he got the best deal offered to him for Chych.

I didn't say Strome was a bust, but he sure has not live up to expectations.

Yeah. clarke wasn’t available. Just like we wouldn’t have made Geunther or Cooley available at this point.

That's what LA said, but who knows what was discussed. LA isn't in the same position as we are so your Guenther and Cooley comparison is moot. My opinion of course.

That's exactly it. BA took what he thought was the best offer for Chychrun. Like the return or not, the market is the market. It's not like he missed out on better offers.
I believe the offer reported by Pagnotta was 2x1sts, Bjornfort, and from what i gather is Pederson’s contract. That’s what you compare the return from Ottawa against. Of course we also have to add on what BA manages to get for contract dumps as well into the return.

That's the sad part. Once other teams knew we couldn't take money back the price of return dropped. Oh well, onward and upward.

That's just it, these guys rarely get deals right. The contract dumps have nothing to do with the Chych deal.

My bad, I thought you meant the contract dumps BA will take on this off season.
I did. BA said he didn’t want the contract dumps do to the assets they would have to forego (for multiple years i might add) if they took on some other organizations mistake.

But. Even if you ignore the contract dump. What do you think of LA’s 2x1sts plus Bjornfoot vs the return we received? That’s a debate worth having. Someone may be a big believer in Bjornfoot. Or do you not want to talk about that reported return because it came from a non-Jakey approved source and should we still talk about how supposedly BA should have been able to get Clarke+ for Chychrun.

All I have to say is that our scouting staff better be good, because we're outside the top tiers and in the range where there are about 12 guys that could be selected.

Good news is that we're going to get two of those guys, bad news is that we're outside the top tier range.
I see a clear top 7. They might be the first 7 guys taken, but more likely that they won't. We likely get a chance at a faller if we pick at 9 - probably Michkov or Benson.

I'd rather have the 10th or even 12th pick in this draft 100 times over than Clarke. Are we all forgetting that Clarke was drafted 8th overall? He has the same issues now that he did back then despite the development time. He's a good prospect but he's not a home run and I honestly feel that there will be several D in this draft that will be better than him and are also probably available later.

Assuming Benson doesn't fall to us at 7...

7. Moore
11. Danielson

I think I'd be pretty happy with that. We can make a play for a top pairing defenseman next draft when we have more available draft capital to make moves.

Hayton
McBain
Cooley
Moore
Geekie
Danielson
Jenik

That's a pretty solid pipeline down the middle. We have a solid group of wingers and goalies. If we can add more D in the following drafts/later rounds, I think we'll be pretty well set.

I wouldn't do that LA trade that you have presented. All these sources speculate on all these trades. Most never get it right.

They must have also gotten it wrong when they all reported that under no circumstances were they moving Byfield or Clarke in a deal for Chychrun.

Teams release info they want the media to pick up on. Nobody knows for sure what happens behind closed doors. Maybe those two weren't available, I don't know, but they may have as well. Don't believe everything you hear.

Watching the WHL behind the scenes all access road to the NHL draft and I learned that Yager and Heidt have been best friends since age eight. Families are close. They’ve played together their whole lives until the Dub. They also played AAA with Price, Lind and Korchinski.

Sucks that Barlow got hurt and won’t get his crack at 50 goals. I bet he would’ve hit it.

He’s an interesting one for me. His shot is really the only thing that stands out. He’s big and strong and a decent skater. His positioning is really good and helps him be a good PKer. He’s not really mean or overly physical but he doesn’t shy away. He’s not a net crashing power forward but he’s got the frame and gumption to get good positioning and protect the puck when he has to.

There’s a lot to like but he’s overall pretty vanilla apart from the shot. He’s an extremely likable kid in interviews. Tons of energy. And being a 200+ lb 17 year old with a full beard and a very puppy dog excitement is pretty funny. Especially with his being “cross eyed”(?) or “lazy eyed”(?) not sure what the term is. But he’s very endearing on camera, anyway.

You look at him, and you see his goal totals, and you assume you’re going to see this big bull on the ice. This like intense force of nature. But I haven’t seen that. He mostly just above average at most things, with a really good shot, and very smart positional instincts.

He’s like if Radim Vrbata had the physical appearance of Zack Kassian but still just kinda played like Radim Vrbata, despite looking like Zack Kassian.
