Good point.

I'll admit that using the term "skipped" regarding the combine might not have been the best choice of words. Still, no combine and rumors (even though they're just rumors) that even hint that he may be trying to fall to preferred team(s) makes him too risky for us, IMO.

I'm going off of what Dan Marr (Director of NHL Central Scouting) said when asked about Russians coming to the Combine. Maybe he was wrong or he's being misunderstood, or politics. I just don't know. Either way, if there's one team in the entire league that he might not want to play for, it's us. And he has all that time under the KHL contract to find a way off our team if he did choose to. We've been burned before (Wheeler, Turris, etc.) I would hope and expect that the teams actually have a better grasp of what's real and what's overblown BS being reported than I do though.

Emptying the 2023 NHL Combine Notebook.

"The other top story was the absence of Russian players at the Combine including top prospect Matvei Michkov. Central Scouting Director Dan Marr was asked about this on Friday. He admitted that the nine Russian players would be welcomed at the Combine if they could get there. Marr went on to talk about the current geopolitical climate. “We can’t control the geopolitical situation over there. We talked to all the agents for the players and it’s difficult to travel. It’s difficult to get visas to enter the U.S. and we just left it open. There were top-nine Russian players."
You were initially correct.

I want to clear up this Invited thing. Yes…they were “invited” while the NHL knew full well it was too late for them to get their paperwork and travel in order. It was a face saving half measure. Do you really think every Russian prospect hoping to get drafted who is based in Russia blew off the combine?

Come on. This isn’t even a Michkov thing. Every single Russian player who is in Russia couldn’t get to the combine. The NHL knew it. Is every single one of them a problem now too? Or can we figure out that the invite was not on the level? (one Russian player who was already in NA attended because they were already here)

Sounds like none of the teams know him because nobody can get access. I can’t imagine the coyotes are the special team.
Have these rumours been around a while or did they just pop up recently. Our guy has been in the rink watching Matvei for a long time. I don't believe he's failed at his job as badly as you're suggesting. I suspect the teams struggling to get to know him are not in Russia. If local scouts are being shout-out, I suspect that's since the death of his dad.

I don't mean to say that rumours are false and Matvei is a high character guy. I'm just saying that to the degree that any rumours are true, the Coyotes have gotten to the bottom of it.

I didn’t intend to say that Russian prospects were entirely capable of attending and chose not to attend. I’m saying they were invited. I don’t believe the invitation timeline is what prevented them from coming. I’m assuming it’s political red tape. Defending Central Scouting isn’t the same as attacking the Russian prospects. I assume politics bigger than born is what made it impossible for them to attend. But I don’t believe it was the NHL playing games.

I’m not terribly worried about it. To me, there’s just no chance this team, of all teams, is picking him at 6th overall. I really can’t see it. This is based on everything that’s come out having some truth to it. If the Coyotes draft him, it’ll indicated that most of this has been nonsense. If the coyotes draft him, I’ll be pumped.

I’m not worried that the coyotes will draft him and it will be a mistake because of all this drama. That’s not it. I just expect they won’t draft him. That’s all. If they do, then great. I’m onboard.

For all the talk about NHL teams being stymied in their efforts to talk to Russian prospect Matvei Michkov, I do know multiple clubs have scheduled interviews with him in Nashville next week, prior to the draft on Wednesday June 28.

I don't know nearly enough about the situation to feel comfortable calling Michkov a prima donna.
Anyone know how much career time Michkov would lose should he refuse to sign with the drafting team? Visions of Wheeler pass through my head.

Jeff Marek just said he thinks Benson and Smith could go in any order at either 4th or 5th. Interesting. Not sure I’m buying Marek as a source for this stuff.

He did float an interesting concept of San Jose wanting a defenseman with their 1st and being willing to move down for one. He suggest to Philly’s #7 spot with Reinbacher in mind.

1. CHI: Bedard
2. ANA: Fantilli
3. CBJ: Carlsson
4. PHI: Michkov
5. MTL: Smith
6. ARI: Leonard
7. SJS: Reinbacher

Not really comparable as Michkov is still earning money as a professional in Russia. He would still be subject to entry level contract rules whenever he comes to NA though.

I’m not interpreting these tidbits about Michkov as making him generally bad or even less desirable generally speaking. It’s not about him. It’s about us. I don’t view Michkov as the problem, I view the Coyotes as the problem. This strikes me as a bad fit. The Coyotes have by far the worst reputation in the league. And it’s a snowball effect. Seems like a bad fit for kid who’s apparently attempting to use what leverage he has to end up in a better situation. I have to imagine much of this is to do with attempting to avoid ending up in Columbus or Arizona. I think that’s different for amateur hockey players from North America.

He did say he was attending the draft in person, so that dilutes the visa explanation in my mind. But all I've got is rumors, speculation, and too much reading into things.
He did say he’ll be there. He’s expected to come early and allow certain teams to interview him on his terms.

Again, if I’m Philly, Washington, or Detroit this is not an issue for me. I’m not worried about this process. But as Arizona? No way man. Nope.

I agree. If it were just missing the combine I'd still be open to taking him, but with the combine AND the rumors of his being selective with who he does interviews with it has become too much, especially for us. Gonna be interesting to see where he ends up, maybe get a sense of how teams feel about all of this, with what they know.

Soon!

Random Wild poster claiming inside info (a guy who’s been right before I guess) has said AZ wants Rossi and that Minny wants to move up (they like Danielsom and Moore, I guess). All seems fairly flimsy and nonsensical.

But it made me think about a deal based around Rossi and 21st for 12th. AZ needs to add. At least 38th. And maybe let Minny dump Goligoski on us.

12 has a lot more value at this point than Rossi. If we are in on this then we are likely offering multiple picks or a future 2nd and taking Goligoski.

Another midget drafted top ten and can't crack a NHL roster, and you want to trade down to get him? No thank you. We want to, or should I say need to, get bigger. There is talk of Benson as well.

Simashev is an interesting pick at 12, and one I could actually get behind. He’s a long term prospect, but oh boy if he hits.
He looks sooo good.
I wonder why he doesn't put up more points though.
If we're considering a Russian giant at 12 OA then I hope we gamble on But instead.
