Carlsson has played winger exclusively for two years and I don’t think he’s shown the two way ability of kopitar. Carlsson, as much as I like him, and have him in my top five, and think he’s a great prospect, also always looks like he’s in some stage of falling down. He looks stumbly bumbly. Still an amazing prospect that I’d be thrilled to add but if anyone in the top five is actually overrated rather than underrated, I think it’s him.
Couldn't disagree more with this, I think he's underrated. He's very smooth skating, he's tall so it can look like he's hunched over a bit but he just glides through the ice, and is extremely good at getting through players, I don't see what you're talking about at all. Plus his two way ability is quite good for this draft class. I really don't see him making huge amounts of mistakes, he's engaged, his positioning on the ice is almost always correct, and he frequently is able to make turnovers happen with his stick. He isn't physical but I don't think he's the type of guy who you want to have in front of the net anyways. A huge amount of his goals scored have been him just motoring through 3 players in the center of the ice, I don't think you can do that if your skating isn't pretty good already.

It’s nitpicking. I’ve got him 4th and you’ve got him 3rd. Haha. :)

Loved this little throw away line from Leonard’s head coach: “Ryan is always playing playoff hockey. Every game, every shift, every practice. He only has one speed.” Love that.

Yeah, Sale is pretty invisable 80% of the time. You don't see him battling in the corners and coming out with the puck. Not a BA type player. I don't think he'd take him with an early 2nd. He's dropped out of my top 18 list from last week. Dvorsky has moved ahead of both Smith and Benson for me as well on that list.
You might not see him doing that at the WJC (though I honestly did see some battling there) but you definitely saw it in his home league. Main thing with Sale is that he's a pure playmaker, his shot is good but not the main draw and he needs to be put with good players to score. His skating also isn't fantastic, but it's pretty good for a player his size, and that's the thing...he's a high skill guy that isn't great defensively (he cheats on his positioning a lot) but is big and skates well with high IQ. I think I'd have him below Benson and possibly Dvorsky but if we grabbed him at 12 I'd be very pleased. I don't see him dropping to the 2nd at all, could go top 10 or could go around 20th, probably somewhere in between there.

I have him ahead of Fantilli and below Michkov, which I think probably exactly zero people agree with me about.

At 6 I want anyone but Reinbacher. Preferably also Smith. Taking Reinbacher at 6 would be a huge mistake to me. He may be the best D in the draft but he doesn't have the highest upside and Simashev is a guy who will be available in the late 1st or early 2nd who has nearly the same MO as Reinbacher does. I still want Dragicevic though.

Smith just scares me. Lots of red flags. Super high upside though. Seems like it probably won't be a problem for us and someone will draft him higher than we are anyways based on scouts, my guess is SJS takes him at 4.

I think it’ll be one of the consensus top five (Bedard, Fantilli, Cooley, Carlsson, or Michkov)that falls unexpectedly, or it will be Dvorsky or Leonard.

5% Carlsson, 15% Michkov, 40% Dvorsky, 40% Leonard.
I'm sure you meant Smith rather than Cooley or did you mean Benson?

Someone make me fall in love with Leonard. I'm not feeling it.
He had nearly a goal per game for the US team this season. 51g in 57gp. That’s Top 10 in the entire history of the NTDP for goals in a season.

He put up 14G 14A 28Pts in 17GP vs NCAA D1 teams.

He’s clutch:

He’s well-rounded:

He’s ulta competitive, he’s mean and nasty, he hits to hurt and he hunts down contact on every shift. He’s a superlative goal scorer who can score in a variety of ways and is surprisingly offensively creative.

From Leonard’s head coach: “Ryan is always playing playoff hockey. Every game, every shift, every practice. He only has one speed.”

Think Gabriel Landeskog mixed with TJ Oshie as the upside.

Agreed.
I was happy to see him shoot up so high on McKenzie's new list.

@moosemeister

I watched most of the NTDP’s games against the USHL last year. Leonard was always my favorite US17 player. Liked him more than Smith the whole year. More than Perreault or or Moore. This year, obviously Smith and Perreault exploded from a production standpoint. But Leonard still has all those intangibles.

I’m convinced BA was talking about Leonard and Dvorsky yesterday:

BA's post-lottery presser:

"..We were just at the u18 worlds, and ya know, you fall in love with some of the players that you gotta chance to get...

...When you're with the Coyotes, and you have all of these picks, especially at six and twelve, we gotta chance to get the majority of the players that we scout...

...Our two head scouts, Darryl and RJ, ya know, when you ride with those guys in the car on scouting trips, you get excited about the way they describe these players...

...and the defining qualities they have, the biggest ones, and I can tell you from watching the u18s, there's a couple of guys in our area that we're gonna pick and you look at them and the defining quality is those guys that we're out there watching, they play like champions. They play so hard and compete so hard and lose themselves within the team. You fall in love with those players. To think that we get a chance at getting a couple of those guys, that's a great thing for this organization...

...we are gonna grab two great players in the first round and give ourselves a chance to win a championship down the road, and those are the defining qualities that I've seen outta the players that are there..."

on PHNX too …

“…some of the players we watched overseas…I had a chance to go to the U18s… you get excited, these are guys that you wanna play with, they’re blocking shots with their faces and they’re diving and they’re playing hard. They’re championship type of players. We’re gonna have a chance to pick them at six and twelve…”

…it’s not the sexy pick at 6 and 12 but it’s what will make our franchise great…
@moosemeister - sorry - I took too long to put my reply to your request together and it got all chopped up.

Everyone is just going to lazily assign us Reinbacher from now until the draft. It’s because they don’t actually like him but a blueliner has to go high and they don’t care about AZ, who needs a blueliner anyway. I feel like every mock draft is “dumping” Reinbacher on us for their own convenience.

I don’t hate Reinbacher. If this scouting staff actually picked him, I’d get excited about it. But I’m annoyed but the practice of everyone always assigning us Reinbacher in every mock.

I was just going to say it feels like Arizona is the dumping ground for the non sexy defensive pick that nobody actually wants already. Haha.

I'll be happy with Dvorsky at 6 and Leonard at 12. I think that's probably what happens barring either me being completely wrong, draft lists changing, or someone falling.
