He was pretty electric in the u18s. Also you won’t get the makar/Hughes/fox defenseman unless you take a chance. Alas probably all for not cause i don’t think ASP is a yzerman type defenseman. Dating back to tampa i fully expect him to pick a small skilled forward and or a bigger Defencman.
I absolutely have time for skilled but undersized defensemen. I think you need to be mindful, however, about seeing skill and offensive intelligence that really isn't there. The offensive skill and the skating need to be really high-end to get me interest, not just above average. ASP is a pass for me. I will let him show me that I was wrong.

Wow that list shakes things up. The players I was hoping for in the second are ranked in the first. Looks like I have to revise my thinking a bunch. I really wanted both Edstrom and Whalberg

When the players you want in the 2nd, start getting ranked in the 1st... everybody goes through that.

Didn’t want to start a thread about a thread. But one of my favs “team board mock” is making its rounds. Day and a half a way I think. One of Dvorsky or Reinbacher will be avail.

Just an fyi. Not meant to derail.

I have us taking OFM in the 3rd when I ran the Realgud draft simulator.

The Hockey Writers profile:

Fisker Mølgaard’s game and his recent rise remind me a lot of Marco Kasper in the 2022 Draft. Both players moved to Sweden at a young age (Fisker Mølgaard from Denmark and Kasper from Austria) to play against better competition and work their way toward the NHL draft. Both players were applauded for their high effort and maturity, affording them a serious role in the SHL as a draft eligible player where they gained attention through their smart, defensive style while questions remained about their ultimate offensive potential.

If all are available, I would select Brzustewicz, OFM, and Pekarcik.

It would be hard to pass on Edstrom's size, but you get most of that with Pekarcik.

I think Felix Nilsson is still in the mix. He was getting a good deal of attention two months ago (including in this thread) and isn't in Button's top 100.

I will say it again--the three 2nds might end up being what makes this draft hugely successful.

How does everyone feel about drafting Michael Hrabal in this draft? Here is a scouting report from the Hockey Writers.

In 24 games with [the Czechia] U20 team, he finished with a dominant record of 18-3-0 with a .936 SV% and a 2.14 GAA.
Summer 2022 was a big one for Hrabal, as he announced his commitment to the University of Massachusetts for the 2023-24 season prior to his debut with the Lancers. When you look at his stats in his rookie season [with the Lancers], you might find yourself questioning why he’s a top-ranked goalie prospect. He finished the season with a record of 8-12-4 to go along with a SV% of .904 and a GAA at an even 3.00 while splitting the crease with his tandem counterpart, 20-year-old Swiss netminder Kevin Pasche.

His size at 6'6" and his agility would be the enticing part, while his play in NA to date is a big question mark. He had a .920 SV% at the WJC-18 and a .927 SV% International-Jrs. Omaha's team was pretty bad and he clearly wasn't standing on his head for them in the USHL.

Would you draft him? If so which round/pick? I took him in the 2nd round with Realgud's draft simulator. If he pans out you have a really nice tandem of Cossa and Hrabal in net. He's going the college route and I am not sure how many quality net minders develop in the NCAA. I can't really think of any recent ones off the top of my head. Howie was nice but not a top tier goalie.

Probably a pass for me. Doing well at the U18's does not un-do that he was pretty bad in the USHL down the stretch.

I would prefer to use our 1st and 2nd round picks on forwards or defenseman. I would take a flyer on someone like Ratzlaff or Milic in the later rounds maybe. Both of the big goalies were underwhelming for me over the course of the year (Hrabal and Bjarnasson). If I was going to take a goalie in round 2 it would probably be Jacob Fowler.

Liked him at the WJC, didn't like him in the USHL. Having said that, I think drafting an athletic 6'6 goalie is always going to be a good move, even if they don't pan out, and even if they kind of suck now (not saying he sucks, he's pretty good), because there's just soooo much development to be done with goalies, and especially tall goalies so it's a long term investment. We do have Cossa already, and I'm a giant believer in him but having more high end goalie prospects isn't a bad thing, especially if he's available in the 2nd round+. I do think there's going to be so many excellent players available at the beginning of the 2nd round that I think I would draft them first. And for tall goalies, there's also Gajan or Clara that I honestly prefer personally and I think they will be available a bit later, so you can always get those if you really want. We'll see what our team decides to do but I wouldn't be mad about adding an extra giant athletic goalie...

I like that trio, but there is no way in hell I am passing on Edstrom if he is available in the 2nd. If people are really clamoring for a right-handed defensemen, Strbak deserves some attention somewhere in the 2nd-3rd round. I like Brzustewicz but he doesn't fit the profile of what we seam to like on the backend.

I'd take Strbak in the 2nd, but he won't be there. If Detroit doesn't take him at 17, he won't be there at 40.

Same with Edstrom.

I think you are absolutely right about Edstrom. I have no idea where Strbak goes exactly. The tail end of the 1st and the first half of the second tend to blend together on draft day. I won't be shocked if someone likes him enough to take in the last part of the 1st.

Another guy is Wahlberg. 17 or bust getting him.

I think you could say “but they won’t be there” about some 20+ guys in this draft. Some guys people really like will be there in the 2nd round. Not Edstrom but Strbak has a chance.

Maybe Philly will take a defenseman at pick #7:

How will #Flyers prioritize their rebuild? Hint from Keith Jones: "The blue line, to me, is the most important thing. We want to have a really advanced back end."

I could see Arizona going D too.

There's been a lot of talk about who might be available at different draft positions, and opinions vary based on which lists you've been looking at. But the reality is that each team has their own list that may or may not look very close to the consensus.

So I decided to simulate how the draft might go to see how often various players would be available at Detroit's different picks. To do this, I collected as many different draft rankings as I could find, and for each simulation of the draft that I performed, I randomly assigned each team their own ranking, with more recent lists being more likely to be selected. Whenever a team selected, they simply took the highest-ranked player remaining, according to their list (so positional need is not taken into account). I did 100,000 simulations and measured how often each player was still available at the 9th, 17th, 41st, 42nd, and 43rd picks. Anyone not appearing on this list was always available at any of these positions.

It's obviously not perfect, but hopefully, this can provide some common ground when we're discussing who will or will not be available for Detroit to pick.

So, we have a good possibility, according to this list, to get dvorsky and perrault? I mean that isn't terrible guys...

I have been trying to talk myself into we will be staying put in the first round of the draft, to tamper my expectations a bit....i really hope it works lmao

If Yager is falling to 9th, the Wings should take that and run to the bank (Smith I'm sure will be gone). He has 1C potential - transitions and attacks with speed. Picked up his defensive game this year too. I love what Larkin has done this year taking a step forward but Yager has better hands and vision at the same age and I can't wait to see how a guy like him develops, especially with this franchise. For a while now this year I've thought his name for some reason just fits being on the Wings and wearing the winged wheel. If Yager's gone, give me Benson if he drops.

At 17th, I think Matthew Wood will drop there (which I don't agree he should be falling out of the top 10 in the first place) and Detroit should absolutely be all over that. His skating is poor, but he shows high end skill and is able to survey the ice whilst making space for himself in spite of the quickness of foot. He will develop that, it's just a matter of how much. I watched him last year for the Grizzlies and in a league of guys who are mostly all better skaters than him, he was another level above the rest in every other aspect. He's even better than Alex Newhook was and that is very high praise. Backed it up this year as the youngest player in the NCAA. At #17 are you gonna take a chance on a Jason Robertson-esque prospect? Hell yeah you are. We already know the Wings are set at D with the young guys.

Personally, I don't see offensive upside in Dvorsky that warrants a top 10 pick, but maybe at 17. Cristall I'm worried won't be able to translate his game to the NHL. Might be a banger of an AHL rookie at 20 years old but falls off after that. No to Honzek or Moore at Detroit's picks in round 1 either.
