My too early thoughts.

Would gladly take any player from this list after the consensus top 3:
-Benson
-Yager
-Dvorsky
-Wood
-Ritchie
-Carlsson
-Stenberg
-Price
-Sale

I have pretty low stress for this year. If we make the playoffs, great. If not, I think you can do damage with a top 15 pick in this draft, wherever it falls.

I thought Dvorsky was a phenom last year but I wish he would have played this year because I think the competition at the 2023 Hlinka was better.

I hate to use the countryman comparison but Eduard Sale takes me back to Milan Hejduk. He looks like a gamer. I'm looking forward to seeing more of him during the season.

But yeah, this season I don't think I'll be mad at whoever Detroit takes unless they make a 2015 Boston Bruins or 2003 New York Rangers style mistake. (Hugh Jessiman before Brent Seabrook and Dustin Brown)

I am really, REALLY hoping Detroit can get another 1st and another 2nd (Goodbye Bertuzzi and Hronek!) at this draft.

I'm just going to believe that somehow/someway we get Leo Carlsson, and he is the last piece of the re-build.

I think the only way Detroit does that is by winning the lotto, moving up 10 places in the draft from 14th-16th to 4th-6th.

But even if Detroit doesn't win the lotto I think we'll fall into someone like Riley Heidt, Otto Stenberg, Eduard Sale, Kasper Halttunen, Charlie Stramel, Will Smith or some others we haven't even thought of yet. From what I've seen/read on these guys they all have top 6, even top line potential. And most will end up going in the teens.

I'm not too high on the US kids this year. I actually think Musty might be the best American player in this draft.

I'll have to see how Stramel does, he could definitely make some noise. Same with Smith, I guess. Whitelaw is interesting. But I am a lot more interested in this group of Canadian kids this year TBH.

Here's a clip of Stramel in the USHL last season. Good and bad. You can see a few solid plays he made die on Devin Kaplan's(#21) and Rutgar McGroarty's (#13)stick. He skates well enough with the puck and plays physical but could really clean up his passing game. I'd like to see how he does in college this year.

He played with the U18s last year, so I've seen him. Believe he took Nazar's 2C spot at the U18s.

I don't remember him at that tournament. What is your take? Future top 6 center? Poor man's 2C like Charlie Coyle? Or the modern Sheahan?

I like a lot Will , but just look at that 2019 after draft review. The only player he liked was Grewe . We have no idea how those 18 years old will progress

That's just the nature of the field. Even the best of the best are made to look like fools. Didn't Hakan rave about Hampus Mehlen or something? If you're like 10% right you're good at the job.

Very likely we get a forward with our top pick in this draft… But if there is a defenseman I like, it’s this Russian kid
, (Mikhail Gulyayev).

If this kid were to drop because of size +situation in Russia, he could be a great target for round 2.

2023 NHL Draft Rankings: Little's Early Top 16

Stenberg isn't on Devin Little's top 16 but I just have this gut feeling Detroit will have a lot of interest in Stenberg if he's available where we pick.

Fantilli plots course toward top of 2023 NHL draft - TSN.ca

Fantilli's rituals and superstitions sound a bit OCD here. Overall he seems like a good kid.
Considering it looks like Leo is about to play top 6 in the SHL this year, Stenberg is probably more realistic for us. I like Stenberg so that would work for me.

Such a great draft class for Canada though, if I was a betting man I would bet our top pick is from NA this year.

I'd take that bet. Outside of Michkov, Dvorsky and Carlsson how many Europeans will be top 10?

I can see Yzerman using draft capital and players to move up.

I also don't think the team is going to be a playoff team.

Don't mind being wrong, just my thoughts.

FFS... this is confusing.

How does this?

compare to this?
1663167619915.png

And that isn't a sarcastic how does it compare. I'm just completely lost with all the different league designations.

What's the difference between J18 Region, J18 Nationell, J18 Elit, J18 Div.1, J18 Allsvenskan, and J20 SuperElit?

Which numbers from these seasons should I be looking at to compare? Unless I really f'd up my math both guys were 16 in these years.

Or was this all tongue in cheek due to size and I fell into the trap comparing incomparable players?

Is this a top down ranking in level?

But where are the Elit, Allsvneskan, SuperElit?

They just changed some of the names recently but the structure didn't really change much as far as I know. Basically:

J18 Elit = J18 Region (U18 league, about 50 teams divided into four regional groups)
J18 Allsvenskan = J18 Nationell (For the spring season, the best U18 teams play against each other here while the rest stay in J18 Region. This can sometimes make it difficult to compare U18 stats, you don't know against who the points where scored.)
J20 SuperElit = J20 Nationell (Top U20 league. This is actually also divided into two groups for the spring season but EP don't separate them which can also make comparing stats difficult.)

That list is basically the ranking, although I would say senior rather than pro because everything after HockeyEttan is basically different levels of beer league.

TV-Pucken is an annual U15 showcase tournament where each region/area puts together a team.

I sure do like me some TV Pucken.

Anyway, others would know better than I about that being an exact top-down ranking of levels, but it passes the eye test to me.

As for the last questions, the exact names have changed in recent years, but....

Elit or Elitserien = SHL (this change was like 10 years ago lol)
Allsvenskan = HockeyAllsvenskan
SuperElit = J20 Nationell
