These two look like locks to me. I can't see Leonard and Moore slipping past those spots.

Yes, indeed. I forgot him.
Also Stramel is headed to Wisconsin iirc. Can really see us targeting him w one of our 2nds.

Samuel Honzek said Detroit was one of the 25 teams he met with. “Detroit was one of the — I would say the best meeting I’ve ever had here,” Honzek said.

I imagine mtg with Detroit's front office and discussing the vision, our system, our prospects and our commitment to winning must be so surreal that you cant help but want to be part of it

The high end isn't as good, but there are a lot of guys I Iike from round 2 and beyond coming out of the OHL.

Two guys I like I have not seen discussed as much on here are Carson Rehkopf and Beau Akey. Rehkopf was measured at 6'2.5" and 195 lbs and has one of the best shots in this class. Really good offensive game overall, actually. Just struggled some with consistency. And Akey I like a lot, thought about giving him a 1st round grade. I think he is the best defenseman coming out of the OHL this year. I like him more than Bonk because I think he is better offensively.
Akey is someone I’ve quietly been hoping we would be able to get with one of our 2nd round picks.

Just because youre venturing to guess doesnt mean youre right. I'm guessing James is a 40 goal scorer. Really easy to throw out BS assumptions to make yourself sound smart on the internet. Writing off Buium and James right now or guessing how many years they play in college is dumb
Really? Isn't pretty much everything about prospects a guess? Or are you always right, and implying that I'm always wrong? How's Cholo doing? We got to actually watch him in the NHL and the vast majority (over 90% easily) got him wrong, and I'm under the assumption you were one of them.

I'm writing them off because they haven't played well enough in college to go pro within the 4 year time frame. James would have to take a giant leap from this season. Could happen but very doubtful.

What's really dumb is Draper picking his own kid when he should have known he'd go to college, lol.

Anyways, if you got the balls to call me dumb, put your money where your mouth is. Let's do a username bet. Bet you won't back up your mouth, so far everytone that's lost that bet has created a new account.

It's not a Adam Fox-level loss, Mastrosimone still has a long road to play few games in the NHL. Chances for long NHL career a slim. Mastrosimone is 22 and still weights 170 lbs.

I would imagine if a team spents a asset on kid who's going to college, the team believes that he can be good enough to play pro hockey. But no one can predict the future, some kids pan out and some kids don't. Mastrosimone is in the latter category.

James is 185 at the age 19, 2 extra years in NCAA might be enough. Buium might play full 4 years but it's not like the Red Wings are short of LHDs and Buium didn't take any steps forward this year.
Picking college kids carries a bigger risk than CHL kids. It's always been that way. The "loss" is opportunity cost.

Draper picks Buium instead of Raty, Raty (plus Hronek) could have been traded for Horvat. Horvat looks a whole lot better than having the rights to Buium. (I couldn't have predicted Raty would get traded for Horvat, but I did have him over Buium, so don't give me the hindsight BS.)

I didn't like the James pick, thought they should have picked one of the centers. Just hate it more now.

Rankings for Russians are all over the place this year. The ability to scout them and subsequently signing them is one factor. But there also seems to be wildly varying opinions regarding the overall strength of the Russian leagues this year as well.

CHL kids has to be signed 2 years after the draft and college kids 4 years after the draft. CHL kids can bust too. The risk is same.

Red Wings has scouts in Europe, the director Hakan Andersson and amateur scout in Finland Antonin Routa. If they didn't like Räty and especially if Hakan didn't like Räty, then Red Wings won't pick Räty. Simple as that.

To further the point - it's not exactly binary. "Liking" them is part of the equation but it's more nuanced than that. At some point, they may not think he is worth where he was being taken given concerns. Could he have more upside than Buium? Of course. But they need to weigh that against the likelihood they think he's going to succeed and where he's being drafted. They skipped over him in the first two rounds, maybe they take him with their third pick if he's still there where the potential of his upside outweigh the probability of his success?

As for saying something like "He could've been traded for...". We don't know that. VAN Scouting could see Raty as a total and complete no-value project and wouldn't just accept him as the trade piece for Horvat. Even though you value him highly, doesn't mean that they will as well.

yeah but factor in how you say Buium and it makes sense we picked him. Name alone means greatness, typically.

I thought it was 3 years for college kids???

Calum Richie is a riser lately and I’m not seeing why.

Button has him all the way at 13.
He had an excellent u18. Like I mentioned earlier, everytime he played with better players and the competition rose, so did his game. He's not flashy or a blazer, but he does everything right and produces. And he had that solid u18 playing with an injured shoulder.

Very interesting.

I'm new to the "black book". I know you've said this is the one you always wait for. So the people they choose in the ranking is just overall right? They aren't figuring like what each team needs and all that to see who is being picked where.

For instance, they have us getting Perrault and But going top 8. Is that based on how good that player is, or they are predicting that team to pick that guy at that moment?

Firstly, this is not a mock draft, it is their ranking of players. So they are not attempting to predict how the draft will actually go.

Secondly, they are an independent scouting service. I personally think they are the best one out there in that regard, although they obviously still have their misses and I will occasionally disagree with them on certain players or certain takes on certain players. The reason I look forward to The Black Book is to get an explanation on their rankings that includes grades in certain areas *skill, sense, skating* as well as quotes from the scouts on their staff and anonymous NHL sources on a particular player throughout the course of the season.

James is literally entering his D+2 season. If you want to bet right now that he won't get a contract from the Wings, I will gladly bet you a bottle of whatever you want.

It's actually graduating class. So if the kid is already in college then 3 years, but typically they haven't started college yet before the draft, so in the vast majority of cases it's 4 years. CBA text:

(c) College Players.

(i) If a Player drafted at age 18 or 19 is a bona fide college student at the time of his selection in the Entry Draft, or becomes a bona fide college student prior to the first June 1 following his selection in the Entry Draft, and remains a bona fide college student through the graduation of his college class, his drafting Club shall retain the exclusive right of negotiation for his services through and including the August 15 following the graduation of his college class. The Club need not make a Bona Fide Offer to such Player to retain such rights.

With name changes you can only bet with one person at a time, if newfy doesn't pony up (which I totally expect him not to) then you're on. Let's give him a week.

Loser changes his user name to "Kienan Draper's #1 fan".

FYI, by the time Buium and James graduate, the Wings will have plenty of bottom pair D and bottom 6 wingers, I see them signing elsewhere even if they become pro.

They do a pretty good job. I was a little disappointed last year with it because a few of the guys that Detroit picked either werent in it at all or were listed a no drafts and their write ups were really small. Im actually on the fence with buying it this year, and Ive bought it for the past 6 drafts. They have a few surprise hits but some big misses as well.

CHL kids typically sign 2 way contracts because there's no path forward for them aside from the AHL. College kids can choose to stay in college. That is the risk.

Obviously they had Buium higher on the list than Raty. I don't think he was on some sort of "do not draft" list. Regardless it was a missed opportunity, "simple as that".
