He's #9 on McKeen's, #9 on Dobber, Elite Prospects has him #10. His skating is phenomenal and he has the hands to match. Kid can stickhandle in a phone booth. His defensive game is also elite, arguably tops in the entire draft. His puck retrieval/getting out of his zone is fantastic. Watch the YouTube film on him there's a few times where he fakes out the forward so badly on puck retrieval that the forward goes face first into the boards trying to catch Simashev. Pair that with his size and he's a slam dunk at #17 for me. I see at worst a stud #2 dman with Simashev. At this point I'm concerned if he'll be there at 17 tbh.
Pronman had Simashev #10 aswell on his final rankings.
Interesting, 4 publications put him top 10 recently.

Can anyone explain how so vastly different some prospects ranks are across mocks/rankings?

I know Simashev is a good example, but I also think about players like Halttunen and Edstrom who can be ranked in like a 25-30 player range.

Given that we are pretty set on LD and that I think Simashev is purely a projection pick where you are hoping his tools turn into something (and dealing with the Russian factor) I’ll say I am not that interested in Detroit picking him with their first 2 picks at all.

But that’s just me.

You and I can watch the same player and have a very different opinion of how good that player is and how they project to a higher level.

It’s simple. I’m surprised there isn’t more variance than there is, to be honest.

A lot of it is what you project the player to ultimately end up being. Simashev is as high as 9 b/c those people see decent offensive potential potential in him to go along with his size/skating/defense. In the same vein he's as low as 40 b/c his stats dont wow and there are doubts he has the offensive punch worth picking in the early/mid first.

Its hard to put up points as an underage player in that league on defense. You arent getting prime (if any) PP time and your minutes are limited. You're also playing against full grown men. I want a C at 9 but at 17 I'd be ecstatic to add Simashev even if he's kinda redundant and Russian. Yzerman has no issues selecting Russians, could see him going Simashev at 17. Dont know if he would go Simashev over Willander though if Willander was still on the board.

Well we could do that or we could give these prospects more time to develop, before we call them as mistakes.
Mastrosimone's rights expire this summer, can I call it a mistake then?

USHL kids tend to go to college, their rights expire after 4 years. If you're going to pick them, they need to be good enough to play pro before 4 years or you risk losing them for nothing.

I'm venturing to guess that Buium and James will also play 4 years of college.

Wahlberg’s profile is interesting. Might be a better skater than Edstrom, but plays in a worse developmental system in Malmo. Remember the development powerhouses in Sweden are Rogle and Frolunda with Djurgarden a distant 3rd.

I’d be down to draft Wahlberg, Edstrom and Nilsson with our three 2nd round picks. That covers a lot of organizational needs.
I am guessing only one of those three is available there. Just a hunch

I think you have said that on here to me a couple times before. I suppose its good to remember this applies nearly every time.

This is personal rankings season right now.
So everyone has a different individual opinion on players.

But when the guys in the know release their final pre draft mocks (Or Bob’s final consensus rankings ). That will give you a solid ground on what range to expect players to go.
Those will be predictions/expectations, rather than opinions.

Last year Bob’s list top 32 players… 29 of them got selected in the first round. Pronman’s final mock went 30/32.

Dobber Prospects has Dvorsky at 15.

Nice to see Jayden Perron at #12, I really like him and wouldn't be upset even if the Wings took him at #9.

think it is a number of factors. russians being harder to scout live, more famaliarity with other leagues, perhaps something else. Simashev would be in top ten contention (he kind of already is one some lists) imo if he played in a different league and But in contention for top 15.

It's not a Adam Fox-level loss, Mastrosimone still has a long road to play few games in the NHL. Chances for long NHL career a slim. Mastrosimone is 22 and still weights 170 lbs.

I would imagine if a team spents a asset on kid who's going to college, the team believes that he can be good enough to play pro hockey. But no one can predict the future, some kids pan out and some kids don't. Mastrosimone is in the latter category.

James is 185 at the age 19, 2 extra years in NCAA might be enough. Buium might play full 4 years but it's not like the Red Wings are short of LHDs and Buium didn't take any steps forward this year.

Red Wings scouting staff seems to value good developing programs - AFTER THE DRAFT. Big difference, imo, it has been affecting on their selections for a while. Usually they know the career change at draft time. Where the kid is coming from and where he is going next.

Like that Denver is praised and many guys have gone there after draft. Also won't seem to hurt, if you are from already from Rögle or Frölunda, or going there. Mazur is definitely the current success story, USHL pick, was going to Denver great program, personality known by Draper. Think we could see more of these in near years.
Circling back to this subject, Red Wings seems to have kids going to same programs in NCAA. And since the 1st round names are familiar to all by now, let's start fishing mid/late round projects.

The OHL isn't looking too great this season. Kind of makes me want to focus our picks more on the WHL and in Sweden this draft.
The high end isn't as good, but there are a lot of guys I Iike from round 2 and beyond coming out of the OHL.

Two guys I like I have not seen discussed as much on here are Carson Rehkopf and Beau Akey. Rehkopf was measured at 6'2.5" and 195 lbs and has one of the best shots in this class. Really good offensive game overall, actually. Just struggled some with consistency. And Akey I like a lot, thought about giving him a 1st round grade. I think he is the best defenseman coming out of the OHL this year. I like him more than Bonk because I think he is better offensively.

Just because youre venturing to guess doesnt mean youre right. I'm guessing James is a 40 goal scorer. Really easy to throw out BS assumptions to make yourself sound smart on the internet. Writing off Buium and James right now or guessing how many years they play in college is dumb

Rehkopf is definitely an interesting one and seems like the type of guy the wings would like to add. Big shot, can skate and a mean streak. I've read people questioning his motor and thats not exactly the type the wings have been drafting. I didnt see it at the Hlinka but I'm not a scout either.

If he gets the motor straightened out I tihnk he could make hiself into that fan fav type really quick

Just curious, what's the eligibility rule? Willander has played 4 pro games.
If they were amateur tryouts, I would assume fine. If you and I know he's played 4 games in the SHL I would hope the NCAA does as well. Not that the NCAA isn't anything less than a pro league that doesn't adequately pay it's players...

And you’re probably right. Edstrom probably sneaks into the 1st, and Wahlberg probably goes early 2nd before Detroit.
If they really like them, I am not opposed to trading some of that 2nd round capital to move up and grab them. It clearly isn't a situation you can predict given the randomness of the late first and second rounds. I would love to have both in the organization.
