Kind of frustrating how Detroit is still slow to add prospects who can make an impact when you look at how Ottawa was able to add a #1 center, a top pairing defenseman, a middle six winger and probably a third pairing defenseman within one draft in 2020, Sokolov and Järventie might also become regular NHL players.
Buffalo very similar.
And this even when considering how we were very lucky with Seider and Raymond.

Ottawa doesn't have a first round pick this year, might be the time for Detroit to work some magic and close the prospect gap a little. Probably has to be done this draft, can't see how Detroit would be able to keep up with Ottawa and Buffalo skill wise without overpaying on free agents or through trades.

Really shows how much of a difference selling assets makes. Most notably, Ottawa moved out Karlsson and Stone, and Buffalo sold O’Reilly, Eichel, and Reinhart. We took a slow death so it’s taking longer to turn around. Nyquist and Tatar got some pieces, but the main sales for us were Mantha and Bert, and the most impactful part of both those deals (Cossa and 2024 first) are years away from being core players

Ottawa had two top 5 picks that year (and an additional 1st), without that it's not looking like a special draft. Only Stützle and Sanderson are needle movers. Unfortunately we didn't start from a position of having any superstars to sell. Good thing is we have two 1sts this year and 3 2nds, that could put us in a position to do something similar and add multiple players.

On the flip side for them they have some bad looking drafts otherwise (2021 and 2022 look weak for them, 2019 nothing special etc).

also it's kinda just.....too early to say whether some of the non high picks in Yzerman's drafts will pan out or not still

guys like Soderblom in the Seider draft and Wallinder in the Raymond draft are still very much up in the air as far as how they'll turn out

Wallinder just got nominated as the best player U22 in Europe. (seider and soderblom were the previous two winners) So at least they have that going for them.

Pass, he's too similar to Kasper.

Maybe I'm sleeping on Danielson, but I really hope we don't pick him. I wouldn't even take him at 17 to be honest. Not enough upside.
Yeah, I have not loved what I have read about Danielson. I do like the idea of taking Gavin Brindley if he drops due to his size. The composite lists him at 30, but if we can take him with one of our 2nd rounders I think he can be a Brayden Point type of surprise. He's due to have a breakout year at Michigan.

Go back a couple of pages and watch some of the highlights.

6'2" center with great speed, great shot, not afraid of contact and plays a solid 2-way game. He's realgud. I'd be OK with him at 9.
I've seen those highlights.

I dunno, I just don't love his game for a top 10 pick. I subscribed to the CHL playoffs, and watched a ton of OHL/WHL playoff games. Like I said before, maybe I'm sleeping on him a bit because the Wheat Kings missed the playoffs, so I got a ton more looks at other draft eligible CHL players. I also watched a good amount of the U18s, and again he wasn't playing there for Canada. So it could very well be that I've watched the other guys a lot more, causing me to be "sleeping" a bit on Danielson.

To me though, if there are guys like Benson/Dvorsky/Leonard available at 9, I take them all well before Danielson. I'd be fine with Danielson at 17 though.

Also would give us a top 9 right handed draw guy which is important to the build. Love Danielson's game, is in my top 10.

I don’t think Danielson has produced enough to be considered a guy with enough upside for #9.

I’m not solely after production. Many big producers are flawed and bust.

But players who fail to produce at the CHL level is an enormous red flag. That is an easy litmus test on who not to draft.

That is why I think Yzerman will take Danielson, his production is what some point to as a reason to doubt his game. Yzerman has proven to be pretty adapt to deep dive a prospect like this and then the org does a good job of putting guys in the right places to develop a perceived flaw into a strength. They did it with Seider, did it with Kasper. He saw their skills were better than the production. Think the same will happen here.

Then you add in the extremely big need for a right handed center in the org, and that he plays a good two way game, got to believe he is big on the Wings radar.

To back this idea up with something tangible.
In his 18 year old season Danielson averaged 1.14 PPG.

In the last 10 Drafts there have been 49 forwards drafted in the top 15 picks that also played in the CHL.

Of those 49 forwards. 45 of them had atleast one year with a higher PPG then Danielson by the end of their 18 year old CHL season.

The 4 guys who did not surpass his Points per game?
Jake Virtanen, Zach Senshyn, Ty Dellandrea and Jake DeBrusk.
Also Logan Brown and Conor Geekie just barely had a higher PPG season.

Not the most ideal company…
