I wont lie, I'll be pretty upset with Honzek at 9. Not with everyone else who will be available at that point. I just dont see it....but I guess I'm not paid to do it. Feels like a Tyler Wright move though....

Would you be happier with:

Danielsson+Honzek+Dvorak+Haulttunen+Whitelaw

or

Moore+Willander+Dower Nilsson+Fikser Molgaard+Perron

??
I don't really know what to make of Honzek. hockeyprospect.com was super high on him in their January ranking, and I value their opinion a ton.

But I just have not seen enough of him to really have an opinion.

The more I think about, the more I’m hoping that Leonard slips to us at 9. I just love the idea of his tenacity on the Wing with Marco Kasper. Just watching us get bullied by tougher teams and then watching the playoffs this year, i love the idea of having more guys that not only have skill and scoring ability, but also that determination and nastiness to make us that much harder to play against.

Having said that, after watching this video, I’d be okay getting Danielson with one of our picks (I realize he isnt exactly what I was preaching about in my paragraph above):

Leonard feels like he is on that Cutter Gauthier rise from that draft class. NHL teams value all the things he does and I would be surprised if he makes it to 9.

I will say for those of you that like how Leonard plays, you should be really hoping for Koehn Ziemmer at either 17 or with one of the 2nd rounders.

As far as playing a physical game and being a scorer, he brings that in spades.

What makes you say he doesn’t possess elite skill? He has elite hands, a solid shot, absolutely sky high hockey IQ, I’d say even better than Bedard if I’m being honest. His play making is definitely elite. We’re talking about him at 9 because this draft is stacked. He would have gone top 3 last year and possibly 1st overall.

Edit: I’m also going to say he doesn’t actually have bad speed at all. It’s good but not great at this point. It was a way bigger issue last year than this year and he’s been one of the faster guys on the ice all year.
Because he doesn't possess elite skill. He is far more of a product of intelligence and effort than pure skill. I would certainly agree that he has above average skill for this class but I am not willing to call it elite and won't even consider calling it NHL elite. Appreciate, however, that I am quickly becoming an old man and I grew up in a time when not everyone was "elite" or "special."

I think Benson has a lot going for him but comes with far more risk than some want to admit. I don't see him as a no brainer at 9. To each his own though.

If reinbacher is off the board come drw pick and SY really wants a rhd like willander or asp, whoever it is, has a good chance of being gone by the next pick
trade back 3 or 4 spots and get more draft capital if they just have to have a RHD for their first pick. ASP and Willander should be available around the 10-15 range right? And they most likely will choose willander because of the size difference(?). Not sure who is the actual better ceiling player between him and ASP.

Then trade the newly acquired 2nd with one of our 2nds to move up for another late 1st round pick.

Then trade our 17th and a 3rd for boeser (cap dump and could work with our lines) and vancouver's 11th. We would have 11th, 13/14, and late 1st like 26th.

And if we keep fu**ing around, we could trade the 26th+prospect+4th(?) to get debrincat. Next thing you know, we just had a hell of a first day at the draft?!?!??!

My worry there though is that Gauthier (and other high-energy north south wingers like Cozens) had a pretty crucial advantage with 2-3 inches of height, heavier player too.

Idk if Leonard quite has the frame to play the game he does against bigger, faster competition. I’m just a little skeptical of the way he scales up.

My opinion:

It's Honzek at #9.

Teams watch the playoffs, and I'm certain they see Tkachuk, so he might go higher than #9.

Teams watch the playoffs, yes, and I’m sure they see Tkachuk out there, but do they see Honzek as a Tkachuk? Cause I’m a big Honzek fan but I don’t see a Tkachuk-level player nor do I see a Tkachuk-type player. Honzek is more like what we all hoped Mantha would be.

Agreed.
Is it the Athletic that now has us taking Honzek at 9?

Bit of a stretch I think...no?

Is this projection all coming because Yzerman personally scouted Honzek’s game? Cause Yzerman himself would be a part of the decision-making process for 17OA too, and that’s more in line with where Honzek is both projected to go and where he should go. I’m not getting the thought process behind any team taking Honzek at 9. Maybe in a weaker draft but there’s a boatload of competition in the top 15-20 and even more so top 10. I just don’t see it.

Players with Honzek's profile are the kind of players you can almost only get in the draft. I would understand if he goes higher than expected. I'm a big fan of what he could become.

Players with Honzek’s profile are probably my least favorite in any draft.

Big but doesn’t leverage size.
Talented but lacks work ethic.
Lots of offensive potential but really streaky/inconsistent.
Skating is good but motor isn’t going all the time.

Anytime I see that it makes me think of Mantha and other guys that seem to lack the work ethic or smarts to put it all together. And seldom do we ever see those players REALLY put it together.

Players with those traits usually aren’t highly regarded by the folks at hockeyprospect.com, and on their last ranking they had Honzek at #8.

So I am skeptical if your description of his game is accurate or a bit exaggerated.

A large power forward with 100 point skill?

That's what this board hoped Mantha would be. Instead they got a 6'4" 230 lbs Eeyore.

I don't think Honzek will end up like Tkachuk, but the appeal is there.

That's fair, but I just disagree with "Big but doesn’t leverage size.". In the games I've seen he was very physical and awesome on the forecheck. Against, inconsistent from game to game but the potential is there.

And I find his skating to be absolutely excellent for a 6'4 dude.

He does look kind of like a tage thompson with those guys on the ice, but would he still look like tage on the NHL stage?

I honestly don't know, just asking.

I haven’t really watched him much either since he’s a guy that seemed like a late first/early second to me. But here are a couple of his scouting reports.
