Hi guys, was anything said on the czech TV about Koch's hit in the sense that it was illegal because he made no attempt to play the puck? See quote of my post from the GDT below.

Koch's hit on the czech player broke their brains.

I've noticed a lot of Czech comments about the supposed illegality (ref was right there, he saw it perfectly and it was absolutely clean) of Koch's great hit focus on the fact that the Koch made no attempt to play the puck. I mean like not just clueless people commenting on the internet and parroting what they heard somewhere, but also sports journalists in their articles.

Makes absolutely no sense. Makes me wonder, was something like this said on the czech broadcast? That it was illegal because Koch made no attempt to play the puck? Have they never watched hockey before? Do they not know the rules? It really just feels like they're grasping at straws - they know it wasn't late, they know it wasn't charging, they know he didn't raise his hands and they know their player was skating with his head down, so they made up some nonsense about not playing the puck.

In another bizzare turn of the events, the czech team even admitted that they proactively contacted the IIHF to review this situation, even though they do so automatically and input from teams is not required. As I said, that hit broke their brains.

I can confirm it, pretty much exactly what was said on the Czech broadcast right after the hit (Záruba, Pospíšil - most experienced commentators). And they are usually quite good and not biased.

I don't know, I was also surprised by their comments. Maybe they are just not used to see hits like this on international level anymore. It was really huge hit with a lot of impact, but yeah, clean hit. That was intense 1st period! Great game.

Thanks for clearing that up. Yeah, GG.

I see many people like conspiracy theories. The players are either injured or exhausted after the season. The same case with Canada, Finland, Sweden, US. No need for conspiracist hypotheses.
Well I hate this "exhausted" bs, if they are not exhausted to play playoffs they surely can play at wch. All of the NHL players starts every season with knowing, that if they want to get to SC finals, they will play at least till the beggining of June. WCH always ends before SC, exhaustion should not be a factor.

Football players are also exausted after the season, especially the top ones who are playing for example PL and UCL + 1 or 2 domestic cups, and they almost always play for NT in June, even qualifications or stupid friendlies. And they also dont have 4months gap between the seasons like hockey players do. So if footballers can do that, I am sure hockey players can also manage.

And you right its not just Czechs, its every top nation. And its getting worse and worse. Since the olympics is just euro teams, WCH is all we got and if NHL players stops giving shit about it, we dont have basically any international competition, or comparing between the nations and that just absolutelly sucks.

I dont know, I know its an "old fashion" thinking, but I just think, that the national team should be the most along the SC for the players. And they should come every time they can, I dont know maybe even out of sheer gratefulness for their country (or its national hockey) which raised them and only thanks to their national hockey they are now in the NHL making big bucks. I think those two weeks every year is the least they can do for theirs national hockey.

But I guess such manners are not popular these days anymore, and only the money counts. Thats saddens me really, but sadly its the reality.

I am always wondering how some fans admire hits to the head as "beautiful clean hits". Like if the players were ancient Roman slaves serving as gladiators and their health wouldn't matter...
NOTE: This isn't directly about the Koch hit on Chlapik

I tend to get into big fights on the NHL section here on HF whenever a huge head hit happens.

The IIHF rule is different but the NHL rule 48 basically says head first is okay in certain siutation. Most recent one was Trouble on Meier in the playoffs. Reaves on Hronek earlier this year was another great one.

Basically, if you say you don't want any hit to contact the head first then your replies are:

1. completely unavoidable and the ONLY other option would be to let the player skate in the zone without touching him

2. if they changed the rule to 'initial point of contact cannot be the head' then there would be no hitting left in the game

3. go watch ballet, women's hockey and tennis

No matter how much you quote CTE or how many former NHLers are walking around mentally handicapped, addicted or die very young. Doesn't matter, they are paid millions and they can always work at Wal Mart.

Apparantly saying 'don't hit the head first because the head is vulnerable' is a 'snowflake' move and you want all hits in hockey removed.

It's a great read. I also see there is now a 'Gudas is an asshole' type thread so off to read that.lol

So it sounds like we've lost Chlapik (a top 6er for us), won't get Palat or Kampf.

My coffee doesn't very good this morning. I've also read lots of praise for Hrubec.

I'm starting to think we win gold because I'm really hating this team and all the news.

It's frustrating this year as we aren't getting as many names as last year. Canada and US got it worse.

But you see the Devils lose and the Swiss and Slovaks are tweeting at 5am Czech time that they are coming and they are in Ubers to the airport. Russian players used to be like this too.

I think the frustration is with the line that 'I've talked to everyone and everyone wants to represent'. That's bullshit. It was said earlier by Old Man. If Havlat visited Boston and said 'hey Pavel, want to represent if you guys don't make pleyoffs or get eliminated in round 1' and Zacha said 'f*** off, I hate the national team'. I'd respect that more. Instead Havlat says he wants to come.

For a less comical one.. is Palat. He has a very legitimate reason to not go... he just played in 3 straight Stanely Cup finals and has been injured and had a mid season surgery. I absolutely don't blame him for not going. But didn't he know that 3 months ago? It' brings up 2 questions:

1. Why is Havlat saying they all want to go?
2. Why aren't they telling him in February that they won't be available?

Who's at fault here? Eg. Hertl has a totally great reason too. I support it but he was aware his team wasn't making the playoffs and that he had a family when Havlat did his little visits to NHL clubs.

I guess what I'm getting at it... after those winter visits to NHL teams. Havlat should come out say something like...

'We have 30 NHL guys. I've talked to all of them. 10 don't have a contract next year and definitely will not arrive unless they get a new contract. So no Gudas or Kampf this year. 5 more have had surgeries and are playing through injuries and said they cannot make it this Spring. 2 more are having babies and want to be with their families'.

Something like that. Instead.. it's all want to come and then one rejection after another.

It's been frustrating. Especially in the last few days where I'm seeing Seider, Nemec, ehlers and Fiala coming on over!

Thank you but we are a tier down this tourney... I would celebrate a Bronze like a Gold medal in this particular tournament.

Real strange vibe about our team. Lose Jiricek in an exhibition match. Lose Chlapik in first match. Pressboxing our NHL goalie. Give a promising D a 1 game tryout and send him home after flying him from America to play 15 minutes.lol Not trying out many available players. Starting a historically awful NT goalie. One of our most promising players loses all his teeth in practice.

It's gotta be doubly frustrating when you consider a guy like Jagr ( who is 3 times the player any of these guys are) religiously answered the call almost every time.

Heck, when I think of that it makes me angry when I see the Canadian players who weren't\aren't nearly as good as him either still think they don't need to play when asked.

I'm not even asking them to show the exact same level of dedication a player of his stature showed..............i.'m just asking them to play 2-3 times over the course of their career.

Is that asking so much? I think not

Hope he's okay and gets to continue in the tourney.

I'm just completely baffled about the 'no intention to play the puck', 'wasn't interested in the puck' meme spread in the Czech media space atm. There seems to be a widespread fundamental incomprehension of the basic rules of hockey and apparently it was all started by the play by play guys on czech TV, the very people who should be knowledgeable of the topic. The lack of fact checking and parroting going on in connection to the issue is startling.

Just my pet peeve.

Check the top comment on sport.cz. Nonsensical take with an absurd soccer example thrown in for extra measure.

On the human side:

Chlapik was a late cut last year. Made it clear it was his dream to make this team. Shows up, makes the team. He has a young baby and a very pregnant wife at home and he left her very pregnant and with another child to be here. It took one period for him to be knocked out. It's an awful story.

Sounds like your Canucks had to do scome kind of screen (from Slater). Wonder if that had an impact.

Between our programs.. imagine if your GM (Armstrong) came out in mid February and said ALL the Canucks wanted to come and then he announced Lucic and not Crosby.lol The difference is that your guy never said that. Our guy did and I'm not sure if our guy is full of shit or if the players are lying to him.

Jagr once called out a lot of guys about this back in the day! Quoted that guys like Vyborny, Reichel and Slegr always shoved up and then other 'starts' didn't. It was beautiful. It also didn't change much.

FTR.. most years it's been reasonable for us with the NHL guys coming. Our federation doesn't like the AHL ones. It's a weird situation all around.

Yep, the situation you just described....................I'd be pissed beyond belief.

What's this Slater screen you talked about here? fill me in.......I am totally in the dark on the matter.

On your team thread.. Slater posted a screener that Canadian players had to go through to mkae the team.. included a social media check of some point. I read it quickly but it was on the Team Canada post from a good poster (to me anyways).

Regardless Your weird posts, the hit on Chlapík was a dirty hit.

Exactly thats why I think Havlat is not doing his job very good. His comunication towards public and media is terrible, and I am also starting to think, that he is also not very good at convincing players to go.

But my points that the national pride and willingness to to something for the hockey that raised you should be higher amongst NHL players. And its not just us, hell Sweden has like 90guys in NHL and they scored 8 lol. I would be completelly pissed if I was a Swede. Why even bother to have such a great youth development system if those players then never play for nt.

And Swiss has Fiala also???? omg just hand them the gold an be done with it lol. No tournament needed :D

Apologies.. 'knocked out' as in he got hit so hard he couldn't finish. Kari said he couldn't play in the third and he'd be out 'awhile'.

He's officially out for tomorrow and we will see about the rest of the tourney.

They have 3 more potential guys too ... they could be stacked! Germany had a real chance at a Gold team this year to but got the declines.

Not sure if Havlat is lying or the players but there is something not right. Every year but this one has had a better turn out so I can't complain too much. Maybe next year will be better. I even read a Galvas interview saying he'll do everything to make next years team. He's sitting in Europe watching this.lol He wants to come!

2 spots left... Chlapik out for, at least, tomorrow

4 options that I see in likelihood

1. Kaut
2. Vozelnik
3. Kampf in a miracle (note: I wouldn't go if I were him and I think the Czech association should just say we're not asking guys without contracts).
4. Faksa is the last one available.. not even sure they'd ask if he somehow got eliminated.
5. Some AHL guy I'm not thinking of. Eg. Blumel/Kulich/Kral..

So Kaut or Vozelnik.lol

Oh so. I Hope he will be back.

I still quite believe in this team. No big star on the roster, but the team is looking well composed to me. Sometimes the absence of a big star can even help. Other players are not hiding behind the star's back, are not shy to try something by themselves. Everybody on the team needs to understand it is on them, no hockey god will come to save them. Sometimes this works and the player deliver the performances of their lives. Let's see.

Except that it wasn't. Wasn't even a minor, the ref was standing right by and clearly saw it was a clean hit. And the appeal to the tourney committee is just bizarre, the game is over, let it go. IIHF investigates these things automatically.

Only dirty part about the whole thing was the Czech player cowardly attacking Koch from behind after the play. He was rightly penalized for this.

Please guys just because someone on TV comes up with some nonsensical take about the hit being bad because Koch had no intention to play the puck doesn't mean they know what they're talking about. There's no such rule. Players hit other players without playing the puck all the time.

No, simply no. It was an intentional hit to the head, no matter it was with Koch's shoulder. Try to say Your opinion to a player who suffered multiple concussions during his career. Plays like this are dangerous, have serious consequences for players' health, and should have no place in hockey at all.

PS: The "guys on the TV" were experienced former professional players who knew what they were talking about, exactly because they have the experience with such dirty hits.
