Allard is clearly there as a thank you to Shawn but man is he bad lol.

Polin and Malinski IMO (along with Pavel) will definitely see NHL time. Bad news for Meyers because I think both Polin and Pavel have an ability to play with an intensity and puck strength he cannot match, be it at centre or on the wing.

Let's hope Ivan Ivan is a diamond in the rough.

Also, I get the Olausson dislike but let's not act like the scouts missed someone for him.

Only two players drafted after Olausson thus far have played more than 10 games: Aatu Raty and J.J. Moser, both drafted in the 2nd round.

He looks like a miss so far, yes, but the rest of that draft isn't looking too good.

The issue isn't the pick (which we all new deep down, would be a bust given the Avs amateur scouting)..it's that the pick was actually made. Just another valuable 1st rounder thrown to the wind instead of being used to try and improve the team.

And it looks like they haven't learned their lesson yet.

Even if you don’t like Olausson, go check out the 2021 draft. It was a shitty draft and it’s not like the Avs could have drafted someone better at 28

Exactly. They need to start trading those 1st rounders for guys that are a couple years into their development because we sure as shit have no ability to draft and develop players that fit our system.

I think Malinski makes it. He's continued to produce and have an impact. Seems like he could have a Kerfoot type entrance into the NHL.

I am not sure why there is question out there on him not making the team, if he shows the flashes.

JJ is the only one blocking his path, unless I am just not thinking of someone.

Having Makar/Toews | Byram/Girard | Malinski/Manson with JJ as 7th D doesn't seem like an issue to me.

Yeah the '21 draft was pretty bad from picks 10-32. Some decent names but overall a pretty meh group. That said if you walk away with a Olen Zellweger or a Ryker Evans (who went early 2nd), you're in a position to move Girard and clear that cap.

I don't blame them too much for the Olausson pick because-

A) Olausson has talent. This isn't a Mitchell Heard or AJ Greer or even Martin Kaut situation. The size/shot/skating for Olausson is NHL caliber. It's everything else where the issues lie. I didn't watch him in his draft year, but his numbers were quite good for a draft eligible player in J20. Not a crazy shot to take at 28th overall.

B) Hardly any hockey was played that year because of covid. Just a strange year altogether.

The days of a young Avs team are gone.

Avs certainly aren't young anymore, but cap weighted age would a much better measure. A few outliers like JJ and Cogliano who play minimal roles skew the results here.

It's just bananas to me that this franchise can basically count on one hand how many successful draft picks they've made past 10th overall in like... 30 years

If all that's left late in the 1st round is an Oskar Olausson level player, you trade the pick 100 times out of 100, adding player after player that doesn't pan out is just nonsense for a competitive team and I think this year's draft is going to show us the exact same thing - restocking the cupboard with soda crackers is not healthy

Believe me I get the concerns 100%, but I do feel like there's signs of the drafting turning around.

We'll see with Ritchie and Gulyayev but I like both picks a lot. Seemed to be different from the Avs usual draft methods, with guys being a pretty big swing for pure upside, Gulyayev in particular.

It’s ridiculous.

Why don’t they just back out without saving, re-do the drafts and take all the Elite Low guys available in the 3rd and 4th rounds!?!?

I also prefer the Avs trade their picks as opposed to just drafting and missing over and over again. The problem is however, that you need cheap ELC’s on your team when you have big contracts like the Avs do.

Simply trading 1st round picks for established players only works if you have cap room to add them. It does become easier to maneuver around the deadline, but having players who perform above expectation on an ELC would be preferable.

An excellent move that would satisfy Kroenke as well as the HF community: fire the amateur scouting staff and trade every pick for prospects. Not only is it cost cutting, but it’s trading a mystery box for some future player with pro stats for the HF stats nerds to analyze
