Yeah. Winnipeg is already firmly in the mediocre category. With these contracts they’re just gonna drift into the suck category, likely sooner than later.
I don't think they are going to "suck", as long as Hellebuyck doesn't completely fall of the cliff and they have Connor, Ehlers, Scheifele, Morrisey etc. They are good enough to make the playoffs, but that's about it I think.

The Jets are in a tough spot. They can't let all of these guys go or trade them because of the market and what could happen if attendance drops. The alternative is to re-sign them and likely lock themselves into mediocrity. Neither of these deals will age well but I can't blame them for doing it.

I'm very nervous about long-term deals for goalies but Hellebuyck might be a better bet than Scheifele. I'm not a Scheifele fan.

I wonder if the Avs were planning on keeping Tufte up, but saw Allison pass through waivers and thought nobody would be in a position to claim Tufte either, so they took the gamble?

Now like others have said, he's exempt from waivers for 30 days. So he can go to the Eagles, and then, if there's injuries, he can go back and forth between the Eagles and Avs without being waived now.

So it looks like we'll start the season with JJ, Malinski and Hunt as our #6, #7 and #8

One injury and we have two of these in the lineup. 2 injuries and all 3 are playing, including one of them with top 4 ice time.

Knowing how many injury prone dmen we have it's pretty damn scary.

Defense depth is by far the weakest link on that roster.

In about 4 months, we'll all be.

RyJo is going to put up a shit load of points on Colorado's top PP unit. But 5v5 he's going to be a disaster, and guess what is super important in the post season.

The fact RyJo plays his best hockey in the post season suggests otherwise though. He led Nashville a couple times in 5v5 playoff points, including one of his longer runs in 16-17.

No not only. I know you're more pessimistic on RyJo and the Avs chances, but these specific concerns are unfounded.

5v5 Playoff Points

2016-17 - 1st
2017-18 - Tied for 3rd (1 point behind 2nd)
2018-19 - 2nd among forwards (1 point behind 1st)
2019-20 - 1st
2020-21 - 2nd (Tied for 1st among forwards)

Total Playoffs

67 Games - 19 Goals - 54 Points

For reference on this @Ararana, MacKinnon has only led his team in 5v5 playoff points once, and it was in 17-18.

The smaller sample in games introduces more variance in the playoffs and the production can vary. But RyJo has consistently been among the best on his team in 5v5 playoff scoring.

That Schiefele contract is going to be horrific, very soon.
overheard in the Jets front office :

Chevy - ''So what should we do? We seem to be a middling, bubble playoff team, year after year...''
Lackey - ''Well, maybe we could...''
Chevy - (interrupts) ''I'VE GOT IT!!! What if we paid our top players MORE money? Surely, THAT would make them play even better and finally put us over the top!?!?''
Lackey - ''That's just crazy enough to work!''

Love ya, Balthazar. But this take is nonsense.

Girard, Manson, and Byram are all legit 2nd pairing defensemen, and one of them will be playing full time on the 3rd pairing (given no injuries).

Show me another team with someone with the skill of Girard on the 3rd pair. That's a *lack* of depth?!?

Damn near every team's 6th/last defenseman kinda stinks, as do their AHL guys.....hence, they're AHL guys.

Season really needs to start......
