Rank Canucks' prospects

[Blue and Green]

Prospect is any Canuck property aged 25 or less when Dec 31 rolls around, who has played in fewer than 50 NHL games (30 for goalies) including postseason. Thus, Raty, Bains, Silovs and Lekkerimaki are prospects even though they are on the Vancouver roster at the moment. On the farm, Brisebois is DQ'ed by age, Aman by games played. And I should mention, since the Kravtsov thread is The Thing That Never Dies... he is DQ'ed on games played.

Rank as many as you like, to a maximum of 20.

Can't really argue with this list as whole. I think Arliksson may be too low, based on his pre-season and performance in the prospects tournament. And Fernstrom may be too high, based on what he's done so far this season.

If it were still he pre-season, I'd have said that Elias Pettersson II was rated far too highly. But damn, as a 20-year old, he's come in and been one of Abbotsford's best d-men night after night.

Alriksson to me looked unplayably terrible in his preseason games other than having a nice fight.

If he actually starts producing at lower levels this season or manages to transition to being an effective bottom-6 AHLer next year I'll move him up but to me he's a very marginal prospect.

Maybe, maybe not. But why would the Canucks have bothered signing him to an ELC after training camp, if he were indeed a 'marginal prospect'.

I honestly doubt they'd have wasted a contract spot on him, if they shared your assessment.

They obviously don't share my assessment. I'm sure he might be higher on their internal list but I really don't care - I don't think he's a very good prospect.

Not informed enough anymore to give a full list but my feeling is that Koskenvuo is slipping under the radar and should probably be 10th or so.

Off to a great start this year and was Harvard's best goalie by a mile last year.

Puckpedia doesn't have him on their Group VI UFA Tracker. He will have only played 2 professional seasons, after this one is over, while under an NHL contract.

In any case he'll be 25 and appears to be our current AHL backup to Patera.

I wouldn't call him a back-up since it's been an even timeshare but he's taken a massive step-back this season. I was really high on him after last season and thought he had the potential to supplant Silovs.

I liked his play last year too but at his age you have to show significant year-on-year improvement. Even if he's an RFA I suspect he won't be qualified this summer as Patera and Young are both on NHL contracts.

That’s my top 10 right now. If I had to guess, I’d say Mynio is most likely to climb higher up my list as this season progresses.

Basically two potential impact players over the course of this core's contention window (top 6 winger and a top 4 dman), and from 3-7 you'd be happy to see any of them become impactful bottom 6/bottom pairing dmen in that time frame. Everything beyond that is a major long shot.

Rough collection of prospects. Realistically I see only 2 possible impact players - and maybe 3-4 depth NHLers past that.

Despite the top level talent on the NHL squad, the organization almost feels due for another rebuild 4-5 years down the road. Its tough being a Vancouver hockey fan.

Isn't this basically the case with most NHL organizations? Every year Sportsnet publishes a list of the top 60 NHL affiliated prospects from across the league. Very few teams have more than a couple of players on the last list.

Officially, the Canucks had just two on that list--Lekerimakki and #15 and Wilander at #23. The rest of their prospect pool is all about 'wishing, hoping the praying'.

For the record, I really believe that Mynio, Elias Pettersson II and maybe Kudryavtsev will play NHL games. And if you consider Bains and Silovs as still being 'prospects' they're already with the NHL Canucks.

For most of the rest of them, at this point they probably project as AHL players at best. But that's just the reality of drafting and development. More draft picks flop than ever make the show.
