One of the things that made the Pens so successful is that Malkin and Crosby could carry their own lines. One thing that has held the Oilers back is their reliance on just putting McDavid and Draisaitl together.

Rants needs to wake up, but it would also be best for the club if he could handle one line and lift the players there (something he is very capable of and has done before) and MacK another. We need our highest paid guys to elevate lesser players to outperform their contracts.

It's impressive how bad Edmontons management has been. McDrai can easily run their own lines, but the fact that they haven't even tried to get Drai some Lehkonen types that can 1) make up for his complete lack of defensive abililty and 2) be a fine 3rd wheel and collect points from his is crazy. Doesn't cost a ton of assets and would be just so beneficial to that roster.

I made this comment in the GDT earlier tonight...
But then again, Nate is the highest paid player in the league. He's paid to make players around him better. Crosby has carried his line with less-than-ideal players such as Erik Christensen, Shane Endicott, Sebastien Caron, Ryan Malone and Colby Armstrong.
Which sums my thoughts up on him and Rants. If they have to be played together at 5v5 to be effective then neither one of them are worth what they are being paid because they are being paid as if they are a player in a vacuum, capable of performing the way they do without having to be absolutely catered too and babysat every step of the way with playing together and whoever is playing better between Nuke and Lehky and then they've got Makar and Toews jammed up their ass by Bednar as well. These two (29 and 96) aren't worthy of carrying Sakic's or Forsberg's jock straps. Cale, now he's a beast and I am not taking anything away from him...ever.

A report will come out of Sweden, bit by bit at the deadline, that the Avalanche have traded for a 29-year-old Swedish center, who earns just under 5 million dollars on his expiring contract, and who won back-to-back-to-back U18 and U20 silver medals in 2012, 2013, and 2014, and also was an assistant captain on the 2014 U20 team, and then we end up getting Alex Wennberg.

And replace him with who?

Vs Anahem -

Toews - 27:11
Johnson - 21:55
Manson - 20:52
Malinski - 15:56
Byram - 14:52
Jones - 13:31
oh wow JJ / Manson / Malinksi are playing more than Byram. We need to trade this boy while he has value.

I think something can be said about Bednar’s usage of RyJo in comparison to JTC’s last year and their motivation to acquire a proper 2C.

Last year Bednar clearly trusted Compher and the team viewed him as their bonafide 2C heading into the playoffs.

This year Bednar has publicly commented that RyJo isn’t earning ice time and his usage is quickly falling.

You’d hope they recognize it’s too big of a problem to overcome and they’re willing to spend the necessary assets to fix it this year as opposed to last.

It honestly feels like Bednar and CMac aren't on the same page with some of these moves.

Quite possible. I was really hoping a change of scenery would get him to give more effort for at least a little while, but nothing seems to be working.

Hell, I even noticed last night in the 3rd, he was playing with MacDermid and Olofsson.

I wouldn't say so. It looks like Drouin was pushed by Mack and RJ played for Bednar in the AHL so he knows him and he was able to get the most out of him. They probably thought it was worth a try. They were stuck with the cap after all. Tatar was just cheap and he could fit under the cap.

People are forgetting that detail regarding Ryjo.

Bednar gave him a pretty long rope IMO.

Ryjo not working may be a death blow too..

I said this off-season would be a pinnacle one. Now we have three flawed players to get out from under and their roles are #4D and 2C.

f***

Gonna have to do something before, or at, the deadline because MacK - Ryjo - Boss down the the middle is not gonna win the cup. It's probably not even good enough to beat Vegas in a seven game series.

Ryjo has moments where he comes alive and scores a good goal, but you can tell that this is the December of his career, so to speak, and it's not going to be enough to get the job done.

The Pens did two things the Oilers have yet to figure out.

1. They learned somewhat early that just sticking a star winger onto Sid's wing didn't necessarily work. I think they tried guys like James Neal and it just didn't click. But they finally glommed onto something when they put Chris Kunitz and Pascal Dupuis alongside him--two pretty good two-way wingers. Since Sid was going to have the puck a lot of the time, it made sense you should put him with a couple guys who played relatively well without it. I don't know enough about the Pens to see who did or didn't work out with Geno, but it just seems pretty obvious who you should pair guys like 29 and 97 with. I realize two-way players don't grow on trees but the fact remains they traded away the one great two-way player they DID have and used the cap savings to sign Milan Lucic, who was one-dimensional even when he was good, and washed up in Edmonton pretty quickly.

2. The three times they won the Cup with Sid/Geno, they had the proper depth behind them. Jordan Staal in 2009, and the absolutely deadly Hagelin-Bonino-Kessel line in 2016 and 2017.
