Was checking out the Habs board. Lots of chatter about trading Monahan to Colorado. They think they’re getting a first. One person even mentioned Byram for Monahan (maybe they’re seeing how easily his name gets toßed around lately on hfavs?).

Maybe they don’t know Sak-Macs record with trading firsts? Hopefully CMac remembers the track record with not trading 1sts?

Can you imagine all the comments about CMac being so stingy with 1sts but then he uses one on Monahan? 😂

The Habs fans were the ones demanding a massive return for Monahan last year. There was one poster who kept insisting that he had restored his value to that of his prime/blue chipper days and was demanding they be compensated for that player.

Mind you, this is the same fanbase that declared that they had 4 defensemen that were basically the equivalent of 4 hall of famers.

Dealing with the GM who gave up a 1st and 2nd for Newhook? Yes please!

Kind of similar to the Senators’ fan base with their defensemen.

Look, in his prime Monahan was a full-on gamebreaking, top-flight center. Injuries have rendered him pretty much a glorified 4th liner with some upside. I don't see how that helps the Avs.

Also, the Avs, overall, have way too many slow skaters as is. They do not need to add a guy who moves with the alacrity of a Hockey Canada investigation.

Have you watched any Habs games this year?? Newhook is playing well on the top line in Montreal and is well worth a late 1st and 2nd round pick.

I have no idea where the Nylander thing is coming from, but didn't he switch to wing full-time?

I love how RyJo has been playing lately, but if we are spending assets for top-six talent, I think I'd feel a lot better if it was a center.

Go all in and grab Nylander if the Leafs continue to be mediocre.
Too expensive and Leafs won't let him go. They are all-in imo.

Also Nylander wouldn't be the solution to a situation. I would like to have some option which could work for us couple years, min.

I wanted to give some time for him to adjust, but man how did Wood get a 6 year contract.
We probably had to throw a lot of term to keep the dollar amount low.

In the end, he has size, speed and is tough. That's worth quite a lot in NHL world.

His market value was pretty low during the trade.
I still believe that the Avs weren’t totally down on Newhook as a player. He clearly had/has some skill. He just isn’t a NHL center, and that’s what the Avs organization/roster needed at the time.

Looks like one of those trades that was good for both sides.

Not sure where you're going with this but he got a 6 year contract because another team (or more) was offering him term as well. That's FOR SURE. The Avs don't hand out term just for fun but they really wanted him, so they had to do it.

Personally, I think he's been great and exactly as advertised. In fact, we were told he has a tendency to take a lot of bad penalties a la Lake Como but that hasn't been the case at least up until this point. The addition of Wood gives us a forechecking option with size, speed and physicality we haven't had in a while. He compliments that 3rd line extremely well and it's not going to be fun for other teams come playoff time.

He's a 30-35 point guy who does a lot of things that don't necessarily show up on the scoresheet but make a difference at the end of the night. It's a far cry from having these mediocre 5'11 floaters who don't do anything other than put up 30-35 points per year, if that.
