I don’t see the issue here, there’s an over abundance of centers in Anaheim. MacKinnon and O’Reilly played an entire season at wing in 2013-14 because there were too many at the time.
Zegras is playing wing on Henrique's line. Henrique is no longer a real center.

It's quite clear that their 2 top 6 centers down the road are going to be McTavish and Carlsson.

Just because they have two guys who they believe make better centers doesn't mean Zegras isn't a centre.

Now I'll admit, he fully reminds me of Patrick Kane playstyle wise so there is a chance he ends up a winger but McTavish/Carlsson at centre isn't an indictment of Zegras.

He’s played center a lot and is a natural center.
Lots of guys are natural centers that transition to wing into the NHL. I remember Alex Tanguay was drafted as a C but played exclusively as a winger in the NHL. That tends to happen when a 19 year old is added to a team that already features Sakic, Forsberg and Drury.

Same with Matt Duchene. Played C for the Avs for years and even when the Avs traded him to Ottawa and dorion said they acquired 'a franchise center'. He's been pretty much a winger for the past 5 years.

According to 'some' Ducks fans, he shouldn't be playing center :

The difference with Zegras is that he has had a 3 year development 'head start' on a guy like Carlsson and a 2 year 'head start' on a guy like McTavish but he's the one that's being relegated to wing? If that doesn't sound off any flags to you guys, so be it. It's not like the Ducks are contending and willing to 'take their lumps' while Zegras develops into a C, they are fine with being a bottom-feeder, non-playoff team that are develop their 2 newer players in those spots instead.

Personally I believe that he's going to end up a full-time winger within a couple of years whether he stays in Anaheim or not.

So the question with Zegras is, why are younger prospect centers replacing his spot as a top 6C? Are they better than him? I assume that’s the case.

So what makes them better? What issues does Zegras have? And are those issues something that we can overcome?

Because the last thing any of us want is for the Avs to trade significant value for a 2C who isn’t really suited to be a 2C.

Would be nice if Buffalo, Ottawa, or Columbus stopped sucking so Pittsburgh could commit to a rebuild and give us Crosby.
Watch it happen but then MacKinnon will want to play wing on his line and we'll still need a #2C !

My biggest hesitation with Zegas is the Avs would need him to step in and carry the second line as a center immediately and try to win a cup doing it. Meanwhile he isn't even getting ice time a centerman in Anaheim. I'm fairly confident Zegras will get there on the right team, but I wouldn't be confident in relying on him that heavily this season (or next) when all the chips are on the table.

Lindholm is still the better fit IMO if the goal is to all in and win a cup this year and/or next before Rantanen breaks the bank. CMac should be living in the hotel room next to Conroy for the next two months.

Chances are Zegras is having the same issue Nylander(and others) had when they held out which tends to be struggling when coming into the season late. Dude already has two 60pt seasons as a C.

Is Zegras actually even playing Wing, or is this just another Mack/Landy scenario where h Zegras isn't taking the faceoff a lot of times because he sucks at them/doesn't take them on his off-side, but outside of the faceoff he still has all the responsibilities of a Center?

I'm not sure I want Lindholm anymore. As a rental he will cost too much as other teams can easily outbid us. If the Avs trade for him in order to re-sign him the cost will be very high to acquire him and his next contract would be extremely hard to fit in without destroying our depth even more. I'm sure the Avs are looking at other options. Just not sure if they are better ones though.

I agree. I'd rather pay what it takes for a better long term solution (ie: Josh Norris) than spending premium assets on a rental that we don't want to re-up for various reasons (cost, age, decline, etc).

If you think the market for Lindholm is going to be bad, the one for Zegras is going to be a bloodbath.

But as much as I'd hate it (because I hate Anaheim) a Byram for Zegras swap really does make a lot of sense for both teams.
