He’s played center a lot and is a natural center.
Lots of guys are natural centers that transition to wing into the NHL. I remember Alex Tanguay was drafted as a C but played exclusively as a winger in the NHL. That tends to happen when a 19 year old is added to a team that already features Sakic, Forsberg and Drury.
Same with Matt Duchene. Played C for the Avs for years and even when the Avs traded him to Ottawa and dorion said they acquired 'a franchise center'. He's been pretty much a winger for the past 5 years.
According to 'some' Ducks fans, he shouldn't be playing center :
As a young rich athlete, who would choose philadelphia over sunny southern california in orange I would rather live in Anaheim too, but competitive-wise, we are just putrid

I don’t see the issue here, there’s an over abundance of centers in Anaheim. MacKinnon and O’Reilly played an entire season at wing in 2013-14 because there were too many at the time.
The difference with Zegras is that he has had a 3 year development 'head start' on a guy like Carlsson and a 2 year 'head start' on a guy like McTavish but he's the one that's being relegated to wing? If that doesn't sound off any flags to you guys, so be it. It's not like the Ducks are contending and willing to 'take their lumps' while Zegras develops into a C, they are fine with being a bottom-feeder, non-playoff team that are develop their 2 newer players in those spots instead.
Personally I believe that he's going to end up a full-time winger within a couple of years whether he stays in Anaheim or not.
