Those words, from someone like Sean Couturier (who is a very smart but very reserved person in general) are hopefully not as telling as they seem.

Remember when I asked a certain contrarian: what was an action the coach could take that would actually make you view him negatively? And his answer was "If he questioned Couts' work ethic"?

You think that individual will own up to this new development and call out Torts?

Saw some hubaloo on Twitter and now I check this thread to confirm. Should never have been hired. He's detrimental to everyone around him. If Danny B had any common sense he would shit can this guy. But he doesn't. Coots never says anything this spicy. So that's how f***ed up things have become.
AIR, Briere took in SC when he came into the league. I believe that SC lived with DB and was mentored by him. There probably is a strong bond between the two of them. I have a hard time believing that the GM is on board with Torts raking Couturier over the coals on effort. If Jones agrees that effort is not lacking on SC’s part, Tortorella may have gone one bridge too far here.

I have no idea about Briere, but how does a guy like Jones not hate Torts. Guy is as disrespectful at is gets. He was an jerk to the media last year. Plays mind games with your young players. He refused to leave the bench and got suspended and now is questioning your newly named captain's work ethic. Like how does the good PR man himself Jonesy actually like this buffoon.

Tortorella also went out of his way the other day to say that Sean Walker was someone the Flyers would be looking to bring back in summer... I mean... ofc as a HC fine to say "I like the guy and would love him to come back"... but to actively say that they would be doing, when you have a GM?

Starting to think that the Johnson move and getting rid of Allison from org full-stop were some "placatory" moves for Torts from Briere as he wanted to go for it... placatory moves that have not really placated.

Though of course that is all my own supposition, is probably not true, and has no sources sans my own over-inquiring mind.

They got rid of Hayes and TDA because of Torts, full stop. He's fully engaged on personnel moves.

Because everything about Jones’ public persona is performative. That’s how almost every celebrity is.

That’s not even ripping him or calling him a bad person in any way. Just a reminder that it’s a performance.

The timing of naming him captain and then the next day (literally) playing him his lowest TOI of the season was always fishy. Especially when Tortorella approached Briere out of nowhere saying he wanted him captain.

Couturier has been rotting with Deslauriers, he’s been benched for a 3rd period, now healthy scratched. For a Selke player who never slacks in effort or detail, that’s a slap in the face — in a playoff push yet. Laughton had a stretch no less brutal, without the injury fatigue factor (which the coach caused by his exorbitant Pyrrhic victory early usage), but of course a scratch would never happen.

Remember too: Couturier had a January injury which caused him to miss games. While playing through that, and not publicly making excuses, the coach questions your effort? Woof.

The insane double standard that exists between the coach's pets and the players he has in his crosshairs is unbelievable. We've been pointing this out Torts' whole tenure, but because at first he was locking horns with players the contrarians didn't like, they were on board with it.

Where is their defence of him now that he's doing the same thing to this team's captain and hardest working player? The process itself stinks. It stinks when he used it against players like Frost and York, and it stinks now. It's complete trash. Anyone still defending this might as well be employed as the official team ball rinser at this point, at least then you'd be getting paid for your services.

Tortorella pretty clearly has a cult following not just amongst fans but also inside the hockey bubble. He’s Mike Babcock with better PR.
