You know things are rosy when it’s debatable the best move they made for their defense group in recent years was trading for a player with 6 years and $38.5MM remaining on his contract who will play 4/492 games by the time it ends.

And we don’t even criticize that one!

I'm sure he will be running into Virgil in a few more games.

The Good: Trading Provorov

Debatable!

The player very much wanted out, and they were shitting themselves no one could replace his usage after they treated him like god’s gift for 500 (mostly mediocre) games.

They valued Helge Grans, and he’s continuing his sub-NHL arc. Another spot on young defender evaluation.

Still not a fan of the Bonk pick. Even if he hits, I don’t think he changes the calculus of the future defense group at all.

Hilarious that Walker might've been the best piece in the return

Yeah, upon further introspection trading Provorov is mixed at best. I'm also on record that they didn't get enough in that trade when you factor in taking on Peterson's contract, and I stand by that.

York evaluation

I think this is bigger than Tortorella minimizing his season last year. York was objectively very good. Tortorella is an idiot — news at 11. He tried to fight the player in camp upon meeting him.

Even pre-draft, we had him pegged. He has always been efficiency oriented; he’s never been game breaking, functionally skilled but passive; he’s always looked more like a PP manager than a PP weapon. 5 years later, this still looks spot on. These aren’t criticisms — it’s what he is.

But that the team has been so utterly lost evaluating their own 1st round prospect, who has always been super easy to evaluate, speaks volumes. If you remember in their first preseason, Tortorella was bemoaning that he thought York was supposed to be dynamic, and he hasn’t seen that. We know where that report came from.

Normally I err to the side of caution when projecting 17-18-year-old kids, but I really wanted Gabe Perreault at that spot, to me that was the Reagor/Jefferson pick all over again.

I’m not against the Bonk pick. Good junior player at a position of need-RHD. He’s in a good program in London that has developed players in the past. Another strong plus for him is that he has been indoctrinated into the pro game through his Dad. He knows what it takes to be a pro and has decided to go down that path.

Rundown on their D evaluations?!

-Ghost was so bad they had to pay to get rid of him
-Fisto was so good they had to pay an arm and a leg to get him
-Sanheim is washed, let's trade him for Krug
-Didn't know York was an NHLer until 1/4 into this season
-Marc Staal is worth signing in the year 2023. Also never scratch him.
-Developing Zamula is less important than winning games this season. Also less important than making sure Staal gets playing time.

What am I missing?

The mind games with this guy/org. Tries to fight the kid in camp, says he wants him to be aggressive offensively. Now says he wasn't sure he's an NHL guy except for his defense. TORTS is such a fraud anymore. Just throws out a bunch of cliche BS and expects people to never question him.

And this goes beyond him as well. Frost was getting mixed messages before he got here. Ghost got it. Jake mentioned it. They are just really bad at maximizing what players do well. Frustrating as a fan, and I can only imagine what the players feel about it

The best piece is still the CBJ #1, independent of our capacity to use it well.

Walker may provide more value to the Flyers, depending on Bonk's development or lack thereof, but that would be an indictment of the Flyers, not of the relative value of the pieces involved.

Noah "Fence" Cates near the bottom, thankfully Torts is trying to make room for him higher in the lineup.
