Crazy that the 1st 2 guys have been recent scratches, but the last guy hasn't.
It's because Cates plays the right way. Frost finally got his goals cause he went to the "greasy" areas and got the puck to the net. Did you notice how no one scored on all his fancy plays? Torts 1 everyone else 0

“I just need to be able to hang my hat on something,” Tortorella said on Thursday regarding Frost’s scoring and what it would mean for his lineup security.

So was this “something?”

“Everybody keeps asking me, ‘Why isn’t Frosty in the lineup, this, that and the other thing,” Tortorella said after Saturday’s win. “He needs to do those things offensively for us, for him to play in that role.”

This is such catch-22 shit. The 6 game scratching occurred after the first 2 games of the year.

I enjoy the arbitrary "hang my hat on something" line. He regularly hangs his hat on others not scoring or not driving play or getting outscored. He could hang his hat on him being the 2nd best Flyer offensively last year in large sample, but he chooses to not do so. He could hang his hat on the plus chances Frost was generating post-scratching, while driving play, while giving up as little defensively as any forward, but he chooses to not do so.

All in all, Tortorella chooses to evaluate Frost in shallow terms as an offense or nothing player. If he's not scoring, he's a negative. When he's actually a detailed and respectable defensive player. And Frost has been an elite PKer at every level, while no NHL time is on the horizon. If your evaluation is this superficial and off-base, then of course you won't hang your hat on what you don't want to see.

I wouldn’t mind seeing a little more Mete.

Thought he had a solid game against LA. Obviously he can really skate.

Zamula made some good defensive plays with his stick & reach against Anaheim, but he still scares me.

The team must surely have video packages available soon after the end of every games showing every forward's notable offensive plays and defensive miscues, and yet Tortorella's evaluation is less nuanced than some twitter troll who just read the box scores.

Frost is at 1.22 ES GA/60 so far while Atkinson is leading the team at a whopping 4.78, and yet you know Torts is not even slightly concerned about Cam's defensive play.

Tortorella's idea of the eye test is "I don't like them."

I was looking at Cam's stats. I haven't really paid attention to him as much.

He's shooting at 16.7% at all strengths around 20% at 5v5. He's been a pretty decent goal scorer, scoring at slightly higher than 11% throughout his career. His Sh% isn't going to continue forever at 20%, but hopefully he continues to score around that 8-10% until the trade deadline. If that happens, he'll have around 20-25 goals around the deadline. Although unlikely, you might be able to move him at the deadline this year if he continues to score.

"I finally asked him, like, Torts, why can't I get on the ice the last 10 minutes?"

"You're way out of position defensively, I don't trust you out there number one blahblahblah"

"I'd love to watch some clips with you to see where I'm out of place defensively, I think I'm doing a great job defensively"

"No - no you're not. I'm gonna have Brad Larsen, assistant coach, cut some film and show you how bad you are"

"I want to apologize. We've looked at every single shift that you've had in the first 8 games and you haven't been out of position once. It's my bad - I just think I don't trust you out there."

I remember this exchange. Not unlike some things we’ve observed recently, I’d bet.

Frost's not doing too bad so far.

He has a profile picture of him skating. I trust him.

I’m not going to sit here & say Tortorella’s general coaching acumen is terrible. He’s not an outright idiot but like he’s not some hockey czar either. If we’re using past accolades as data points it should be noted that championship was over two decades ago. A decent chunk of this team were toddlers or weren’t even born yet just to make a point. The last time this guy coached a roster that most would agree was a championship caliber roster was almost a decade ago. Since then he flamed out in Vancouver & picked two destinations in Columbus & here that have such low expectations.

It’s like no different then when ASF was tweeting people during the playoffs years ago when AV was chasing a Barzal matchup with Thompson using his Jack Adams Trophy as a shield. Then fast forward a few years after the Flyers canned him for apparently quitting his job then it was okay to question him.
