This is such catch-22 shit. The 6 game scratching occurred after the first 2 games of the year.
I enjoy the arbitrary "hang my hat on something" line. He regularly hangs his hat on others not scoring or not driving play or getting outscored. He could hang his hat on him being the 2nd best Flyer offensively last year in large sample, but he chooses to not do so. He could hang his hat on the plus chances Frost was generating post-scratching, while driving play, while giving up as little defensively as any forward, but he chooses to not do so.
All in all, Tortorella chooses to evaluate Frost in shallow terms as an offense or nothing player. If he's not scoring, he's a negative. When he's actually a detailed and respectable defensive player. And Frost has been an elite PKer at every level, while no NHL time is on the horizon. If your evaluation is this superficial and off-base, then of course you won't hang your hat on what you don't want to see.
