Wait Torts is actually scratching Frost every game? Lolllll

The f***ing Godking Emperor
It must be because they've been winning so much. Can't change the lineup with their stellar performance over the last week.

Also Andrae sucking for a week despite being annointed by some posters and Twitter mongrels is something I never could have seen coming lol

Both MacEwen and Allison got a chance to show they could contribute in a bottom six role, the difference is someone though MacEwen was worth a 5th, Allison wasn't even claimed off waivers.

Yet people got up in arms when Allison was waived. Go figure.
Actually, ZMac got almost two more minutes per game at ES than Allison in the first two months of last season which was a joke because all but the very worst talent evaluators could tell he has nowhere near enough skill to be be effective in that role.

The Kings paid a 5th for him so they could dump a bigger contract and get a guy who could fight, but they realized after 10 games he's not an NHL player. Never was, and never will be.

Only took Ottawa two games at 6:39 to come to the same conclusion!

The level of disingenuous content in this post is impressive.

MacEwen was sent down for cap reasons, same as NAK.

He was signed to a 3 year, minimum wage deal, which is guaranteed, and thus means they valued him as more than an AHL callup (who get signed to two way deals).

Is MacEwen a good player, nah, he's a marginal 4th line forward, just like NAK and Allison.
You would like these guys to play well enough to hold a 4th line job, but only those with an agenda would lose sleep over marginal players like these three.

You can throw Patrick Brown in that group, signed to a two year NHL contract by the Bruins, he was just sent down to the AHL. But we got a 7th rd pick for him!

The Flyers are currently at $22,204,762 in cap going to players who can't play, or play for other teams including the Phantoms in the Case of Cal Petersen

IR
Ellis
Risto
Staal

Petersen - Phantoms

Hayes - Blues

Angelo - Canes
Lindblom - Sharks
Petersen also can't play, he just does it on the ice instead of the press box.

I'll come out and say that sending Andrae down is fine. This is his first year playing in North America and he looked completely lost 85% of the time. It's not as if he's been languishing in the AHL and cruising past competition down there.

In this case, I think keeping him in the NHL lineup would likely be a disservice to his development and confidence.

NAK went unclaimed b/c he makes $1M plus.
MacEwen (3 years), Brown (2 years) probably went unclaimed b/c teams didn't want to be stuck with them at NHL salaries.

Odds are Caps will recall NAK once they clear some cap room, but it still tells you they view him as marginal, we're only talking a few hundred K to keep him in the NHL.

MacEwen and Brown are 13th forwards, stashed in the AHL for cap room (a lot of teams are going with less than the permitted 23 players to save cap room and money), available in case of injury.

Allison however, was on a one year deal at minimum salary, other players were claimed, so the league simply didn't view him as worth the roster spot.

Petersen also can't play, he just does it on the ice instead of the press box.
I expect them to buy him out next summer, two years at $1.67M instead of one year at $5M.
If they can't find a taker for Atkinson, they may buy him out as well.

Given they'll have a lot of cap room in 2025-26, pushing $3.5M into that year to save about $7M next year makes sense.

I think you know that I generally respect your opinions, so I'm going to choose your post to make a larger point that has nothing to do with you individually.

Ceilings are a tricky thing to discuss and often leads to people talking passed each other. Does it mean 90th Percentile outcomes? 95th? 99th? Let's just say somewhere in that 95-99th percentile to be as positive as reasonably possible. That's something like a big shoot first Forward (Center?) who is passable defensively. Does anything really hinge on prime Mark Scheifele or is that just another very good piece on an also-ran team? To me, that's the 4th or 5th best player on a true contender. The guy that wins a Cup and then has the one article written about how underappreciated he is.

If someone quotes me Vegas' roster with six paragraphs that could be summed up with QED instead, please accept this "Go f*** yourself" in advance. I'm not engaging with that nonsense.

I don't follow baseball, but I imagine there's a lot of disappointment, finger-pointing, and endless pontificating going on in Philly these past few days about what exactly went wrong.

I think that in the end, a (Stanley Cup) championship team is the result of a lot of small, medium, and large things going the right way at the right time. You can do most of the things right, and have most of the uncontrollable things go your way, and still end up a perennial runner-up or worse.

Which is why my approach in all sports is build sustainable winners and hope to get lucky.
NFL is different b/c it's a 3 year cycle, baseball and hockey are more 5-7 year cycles.

And take into account variance when judging your team, the last decade the Flyers were around a 90 point team, good years 95 or so points, bad years 85 or so points. If you fool yourself into thinking the good years are the norm and the bad years just bad luck, you stay mired in mediocrity.

The Phillies are a 90 win team right now, they haven't build up the talent pipeline to get to the next level, so things have to go right like last year. They've worked hard to fix their drafting, signing (LA) and development process, but that takes 5 or so years to bear fruit in baseball. Still a couple years away, but Clearwater dominated A ball, now have to do that at A+ and AA this season with prospects. They bought themselves into contention, but the next step requires homegrown talent.

You can do everything right and this is still the most likely outcome by a mile. The NHL is worse in this respect than most sports.

Playoffs don't tell you who the best team is. They exist to provide entertainment.

Well, it's now getting national attention...It was in 32 Thoughts the other day, so you have to imagine that the beats will start asking Torts about it.

1 maybe 2 games. But 5 in a row is crazy.
Torts is trying to put Danny boy in his place.

5. Cap is tight, rosters are short and organizations like to see what they have. That said, players who teams would like to move (or the players would like it): Joel Armia (Montreal), Conor Garland (Vancouver), Kevin Labanc (San Jose), Anthony Mantha (Washington), Andrew Peeke (Columbus).

6. Morgan Frost is a little different. Philadelphia just re-signed him, have invested a lot of time in him, and he was fourth in team scoring last season. But if he doesn’t play — just two appearances so far — something will have to give.

It's hard to imagine that it's not something personal at this point.

The kid has done everything you've asked of him, had a great finish to last year's season, was one of the best in preseason, and played not bad (Tort's own words) in two game, one of which the entire team looked like poopie.
