It was a while back on twitter someone posted " with the retention of Laughton the Hathaway signing really makes no sense " . I kind of agree
Laughton is a LW/C, Hathaway is a RW.
I think the Hathaway signing reflected a lack of confidence that Allison can stay healthy and Brink coming off hip surgery.
Laughton may reflect uncertainty concerning Couts and Lycksell (lack of depth at LW).
Briere may make a move or two once he sees how healthy Couts, Atkinson and Brink are in TC.
His best prospects are in college, the CHL or the KHL - so he probably wants to be careful about having enough depth to start the season.

I doubt any Laughton offer was both a 1st and 2nd (even later picks) without a major salary dump included.
Teams like him, but he's a middle six LW and a 4C, he's not going to garner a premium return.
I'd say a late first for Laughton and a minor salary dump or a 2nd and 3rd is probably his market value.

It's hard to figure out what they can get, while Laughton isn't as good as Pageau (defense at center is his edge), Pageau had to be resigned at 6x5, while Laughton is on a 3x3 contract, perfect for a cap strapped contender looking at a 2-3 year window.

So it makes sense to be patient, maybe a late 1st and a 3rd or "B" prospect.

According to Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli, the Philadelphia Flyers have reportedly turned down a first-round pick this year (either 25th or 29th overall), as well as a future second-round pick from the St. Louis Blues in exchange for Scott Laughton.

People change their minds. We should allow for this. But read the specific phrasing and draw your own conclusions.

Torts specifically asked for a 4th liner to score 10 goals, and I won't be at all surprised if he ends up on the 3rd line to start the season.

Farabee-Couturier-Konecny
Tippet-Cates-Atkinson
Laughton-Frost-Hathaway
Deslauriers-Poehling-Allison
Lacznyski

That possible lineup's utility is immediately upgraded by swapping Frost and Cates, but it'll take until January to try it.

"The senior advisors have no influence"

Meanwhile...
-Fletcher was hired because of his past connection with the advisors, namely Clarke
-Tortorella was hired because he was wanted by the senior advisors, not Fletcher
-Fletcher (Clarke) mishandling of Giroux
-Briere, who was brought in by Holmgren, was gifted the GM role without any other candidates really being considered
-Bob Clarke's interview last season where he put all the blame on Hextall

And those are just some examples...

But yeah, "no influence" at all

It makes you wonder what 100 million years of evolution would look like for the Flyers. I had a team of scientists and artists create a concept picture:

I have to admit that if this is the opening night lineup, I’ll be disappointed. Foerster has to be there. You’re probably right though. The marinating has to continue.
