The key to getting value out of marginal veterans is to...trade them when they have value. Something this Flyers team has been unwilling to do, despite clearly not being a playoff team, let alone contender.

Forgive me for thinking they'll continue to do so instead of suddenly buck the trend.
this Org. beleives in running old vets until their last day then kickin them onto the development roster or retirement village..

trading for value is for nerds....

The problem with trading TK for a first is that you’re unlikely to get someone better than TK with that pick.

Maybe, I suppose, if you’re getting a top 5 pick, but no team in the top 5 is going to trade that pick for TK.

Would Columbus if they aren’t picking top 2? That’d be your only very faint hope.

So otherwise what’s the point? TK is still young & should have a bunch of good years left, so I don’t feel compelled to force a trade.

Provorov is the guy you hope to get a mid-1st for, IMO.

And I think Sanheim can net a 1st, even though many seem to think his contract makes him untradable. I don’t agree.
I think TK would return a 1st and a good prospect at least. Neither may become as good but there is also a chance one or both become better. The return would match up better with our “window” which is years out. The loss of TK would also mean more losses next year so a higher draft pick. This is the same reason I’m open to trading Hart. I’m tired of drafting in the 5-15 range. It’s time to start adding blue chip talent at the top of the draft for a few years

Interesting comment by Torts on subtraction, "there's a hierarchy in the locker room" getting rid of some veterans allows some young players to step up and assume leadership roles without stepping on toes.

Very realistic about Cates, wants to slot him where he doesn't have to expect offense from him, he'll have more, but he's not going to be a top scorer, wants to use him in situational play.

Want to get younger, also wants to backfill with veteran FAs on low cost contracts to protect the kids and remain competitive. Probably a center who's good at faceoffs, etc.

Protection is fake. It isn't real. This team makes serious decisions based on it all the time.

Expect the bulk of open slots to be filled with grinder FA slop with one slot given to a prospect.

Nothing ever changes because nothing has actually changed.

So we are going to backfill with vets? So that means add shit depth vets that Torts will never bench because he will have a say in who we get.

Just had a season with Deslauriers, Brown, Zack, and Lemieux and his takeaway is we need more guys like that?

Looks like I will be saving money again not buying the NHL package.

Well, unless you think they'll get through a season with zero injuries, are you looking forward to Marody, Brooks, Wilson, Wylie and Belpedio?

Listening to the most recent BSH podcast Charlie said one reason the Flyers didn’t/won’t interview other candidates for the GM job is that Briere was acceptant of inheriting Tortorella as HC. As where other candidates likely wouldn’t be.

It came up in an overall discussion about the power dynamic between Briere & Tortorella going forward. Charlie said it’s a valid concern & one he has as well, given that Tortorella is a know political animal behind the scenes then you have an organization that’s given him more say/power than head coaches typically receive already on top of Briere being a first time GM.

Tulsky was brought up but Charlie thinks even if they were doing an open GM search the Flyers wouldn’t consider him as Tortorella would just walk all over him.

I hope that they recognize that Tortorella is running over the entire organization in this situation, including Briere.

But hey, it’s ridiculous to bring up that whoever they hire for the GM or President position should have the authority to fire Tortorella if they so choose.

If Tortellini has as much power as is alluded to, i hope he realizes a true rebuild is needed. I have my doubts. No clue why the organization seems to be catering to him so much

Torts is also not a guy I want to have rebuilding the team, his pro evaluations arr already questionable, I sure as hell wouldn't give him a say

The worst was when Charlie said he doesn’t think Comcast would have accepted a rebuild without Tortorella being the big voice in favor of it. I assume that means without Tortorella it would have been Briere (group in favor of a rebuild) vs. the advisors/Fletcher (group not in favor of a rebuild) which he would have lost.

Torts it the one who convinced ownership to accept a rebuild.

Torts has consistently said since day 1 that this is not a quick fix, will be a process, and they cannot skip any steps to try to fast-track it.

He has said repeatedly that the team is not ready to sign any big name veteran free agents.

He keeps talking about how the Flyers need to subtract some veterans from the roster.

He has mentioned multiple times that he wants to be even younger and hopes more young players push out vets for roster spots next season.

I'm not sure how anyone who has followed the team could think Tortorella is against a true rebuild.

The only way someone could question this is if they think intentional, all-out tanking and trading everyone is the only way to rebuild.

No, the key to getting value out of marginal veteran signings is to pick the right ones.

No one thinks these signings are needle movers, they're committed to getting younger, but you want some veterans in the clubhouse to provide guidance and fill holes. You just don't want to give those veterans money or term.

Briere thinks Deslauriers is a right one. So we are doomed.
