If this was communicated to them then surely Honka wouldn’t be looking for a team to play for back home right now after we tried to send him to Norfolk. Seems like bad communication on our end.
We don't know that. Unless Honka and Gunler are idiots, they should have known 2 things a month ago:
1) They were long shots to make the team. Like, "not chance in hell" long shots.
2) The Canes don't have an AHL team.
The only thing that could have been at issue is if the Canes had told them "we'll find you a landing spot on another AHL team" and then weren't able to do that.
Other than that, Honka and Gunler both knew a month ago they weren't going to be on an NHL roster and the Canes didn't have an AHL team.
That doesn't surprise me. What does is that they tried to send them to the ECHL first before just shipping them to Europe.
They can't ship them to Europe without an European team giving them a contract. So when training camp ended, unless there was another AHL team that would take them on, there was only 1 option, send them to the ECHL.
It is fair to question why Honka and Gunler didn't go after a European deal sooner though. Like I said above, they knew a month ago that Carolina didn't have an AHL affiliate and they knew the weren't making the NHL squad. So unless the Canes told them to sit tight while they work out a deal with another AHL team (which is possible), I don't see what Carolina could do differently.
