This is not how a Cup contending team should be operating...

Well, the Canes have had an AHL affiliate for the last 20+ years and haven’t won a Cup since ‘06, so maybe we’re just trying something different.

EDIT: I just looked it up, every single team not named the Vegas Golden Knights (Cup champs) had an AHL affiliate last year…

I don’t know what the heck is Rensslauer Polytech is. I can’t imagine their defense is good
They are a bunch of stuck up assholes who brag about how elite a school they are and how nobody should be admitted there unless you have teachers who will call you the best student they ever taught in their lives.

And they are not always bad at hockey, but their hockey teams are always pure evil and must be mocked.

(I went to Clarkson, one of their chief rivals. Toured RPI. The stuck up assholes part is true, at least on the management side).

In the tweet chain he subsequently acknowledged a wrong choice of words.

Regardless, still a crap storm.
its not really surprising that the euro folks would rather go play near home than in a ECHL stadium. not that it really matters as Gunler likely ends up like Bokk and Honka never gets much a shot either.

I doubt the players not on their first contract are interested in going to the ECHL either with their weekly contract restrictions. I dont wish for injuries but if they occur, maybe we will have more options to send players.

Yea if you played well in the AHL last year being forced to the ECHL this year because of no affiliate is pretty shitty...I'm honestly shocked we didn't find a way to loan these guys out to Euro clubs before trying to send them down to the ECHL.

We likely wanted to have some older players to be able to call up in case on injuries. We are a little short on defenders with the Jones trade. Either way not ideal.

I’d tell them to f*** right off if they tried to send me to the echl after I played well in the ahl the year prior, too. What a great way to sour the relationship with some of our prospects.

I am a little surprised some of these guys waited so long to secure contracts in Europe, though. Our situation has been well known for quite some time now.

Some people just want to find reasons to dump on us and make any issue seem bigger than it is, probably a TD thing and backlash for us being a top team now.

Having said that it does look bad, and imo is actually bad for player development and morale. I know TD isn’t one to be pushed around in business and I know that’s part of our success but I can’t help but feel accepting a bad situation for a year while figuring it out with one of our teams these last few years may have been worth it.

I doubt we’re actually losing anyone here, and I know it’s just one year but yeah….I think it’s a mistake somewhere on some level. We don’t have to win every battle. Even if we end up with a great situation next year you can’t help but feel this year could’ve been avoided.

but we were "confident" we were going to work something out probably with another AHL team...though we were also "confident" about signing Adam Fox...

I would be surprised if the Canes didn't PREFER that the European players return to play overseas this year. They had to send them somewhere before the season started for NHL roster reasons and so the ECHL was the only option while the players worked out options over-seas.

Not a great scenario but once it was announced we wouldn't have an AHL team, I fully expected all the players like Honka and Gunler would be back playing in Europe this season so this doesn't surprise me in the least.

If this was communicated to them then surely Honka wouldn’t be looking for a team to play for back home right now after we tried to send him to Norfolk. Seems like bad communication on our end.

That doesn't surprise me. What does is that they tried to send them to the ECHL first before just shipping them to Europe.
