So the KHL problem is systemic but the AHL problem isn’t. Gotcha.

Gulyayev absolutely doesn’t need to start the clock in the AHL at 20 years old. He’s not playing on the Avs at 20 and he’s probably not playing on the Avs at 22. Yes I get getting acclimated to North America and the style of hockey would be ideal but Euros coming over early not in the Mikko tier is not a very successful path even outside the Avs. For the few Russian defensemen who have made the jump from Russia they have not done it via the AHL. He’s going to have to do it the Kovalenko route. Hopefully not quite as long but similarly. If he’s not good enough to stick quickly by then years in the AHL wouldn’t change that.

Have we developed any good Euros other than one year of Rantanen? I'm happy letting the Euros get developed in their own leagues.
Andreas Martinsen played around 150 NHL games.

Jeremy Hanzel is fantastic but they really need to stop making him play 30 mins a game.
12 points in 9 games. O’Dette was always going to rely heavy on him this year. That was the plan all along.

A few minor updates from games I've seen.

I watch both UMass games this weekend against BU. In a game full of draft picks, Makar looked good. He was skating well. He competed hard. In on the forecheck. Strong cycle game. Physical. Goes to the dirty areas. Good stick defensively. Some nice offensive feeds. UMass had the Makar line matched up against Celebrini's line. He's a longshot, but not a bad prospect to have in the system regardless of his last name.

Ambrosio is playing 3rd line center behind Will Smith and Cutter Gauthier. He's got some wheels. Made a nice play for the backdoor feed against Michigan State. BC is one of the top contenders this year, so he should get some good experience in some big games later in the year.

Behrens is playing on a pairing with freshman (and potential 1st rounder) Zeev Buium. Behrens was playing the right side in the games I watched. Also qbing the 1st powerplay. He looked the same as he always looks to me. Doesn't pop off the screen, but plays a smart, sound, dependable game. Against BC, that pairing did a good job keeping the Smith line in check.

I've seen a few Green Bay games in the USHL. I don't see much with Romaine. He's not big enough to make it on size alone. Not a good enough skater to think he can be a mobile puck mover type. Doesn't have a ton of skill. Pretty bland prospect.

Watched about 5 minutes of Tri City's game against Dubuque. In that time Zhigalov still managed to let in a bad goal. Pretty bad when you're an ageout and you're a back up goalie in the USHL. No one expects anything from Zhigalov, but still.

I thought he was "close" during training camp, still hasn't played a game a month later now.
Avs probably don't even know themselves since Bednar has no clue if Francouz is out for the entire season lol. But he did play the entire last season with an injured shoulder leading to him receiving hits and dishing hits constantly. Those take longer to heal than him getting the surgery right off the bat when he originally got injured. I do remember reading some reports someplace that Oshawa was expecting him back sometime in November. Not sure if that would be early, mid, or late November.

Sooo any chance we can nab Dorion as our head scout..? Ottawa has been great at drafting for the last decade outside of top 10 picks and we could certainly use that to help prolong our window as long as possible.

It would be nice, but several things point in the other direction... For one, we won't be the only team calling him about a similar job. Second, we probably won't be the highest bidder for his services given our notorious cheapness in the front office. And third, we just hired Klippenstein to be head scout, the Avs loyalty MO means we will probably give him a good deal of rope before we replace him even if it's a clear upgrade.

Avs ain't firing their head scout after just hiring like two drafts ago. Definitely hire Dorion as an amateur or pro scout though, let him choose.

This is the right way to conduct business though. I really don't want our FO to turn into Vegas all of a sudden.

Oh I agree, I think the way the Avs do things pays dividends in the long run. But it does make it a lot less likely that they would ask him to step aside for Dorion, nor would he be likely to accept anything less than the director of amateur scouting title after being a GM.

What's the deal with Ritchie? Still hasn't played a game yet.

Ritchie said in mid July that he was 2 months into a 4-6 month timeline. So depending on when his surgery was (can't find a date) sometime in November would be 6 months.

Hopefully they're just playing it safe.
