Little surprising....his dad played at Providence. Perhaps some NIL money being thrown at him.....

He was supposed to play there this year and then didn’t, might have something to do with it
It’s probably more about Providence adding a defenseman to scholarship this season midway through that is taking his spot.

I’d watch for him to pop up at Harvard, UMD or Michigan State.

UAF could always use a good DMan. He better like engineering though. Most of hockey boys are gear-heads or twigets with the odd Business degree.

Our last really good one was this beauty...

Colton Parayko (one of the odd business majors.)

A lot of the highlights I’ve seen are things that definitely wouldn’t happen in the NHL unless you are playing the 2024 Cup champ Oilers, but it seems like he’s got the attitude, drive and chops to be a good 2nd or 3rd liner.

It’s great that Kovalenko is putting up numbers and it’s much better than him just coasting by. But I gotta say some of the goals are CHL level plays.. now that’s not to say he doesn’t go to the right areas, but it seems to me a lot of the time he’s cutting to the slot unopposed and his shot hasn’t ever come across as something impressive. The instincts appear to be there and maybe my analysis is way off, but I don’t see much more than good instincts. How much do you gain from poorly defended plays or questionable goaltending when developing?

That's why a lot of people are seeing him as a 2nd/3rd line talent, rather than assuming he's going to be a superstar based off his numbers.

KHL talent is absolutely down, but Russia is still the best country on earth producing goalers atm and the average KHL goaler is better than anywhere else in the world except the NHL (a ton of backups in the NHL would be taken over by many current KHL goaltenders though).

I find this hard to believe considering how many actually struggle to make the NHL. Pavel Francouz won KHL Goalie of the Year and topped out as the best no. 2 goalie in the league. Mikko Koskinen was hot for a few months then not hot for the rest of his stay. Magnus Hellberg can never get a job. The Oilers brought over Ilya Konovalov and he flamed out. Jeremy Smith is 9th in KHL SV%.

I don't think the KHL goaltending is really all that good... the style of play makes the numbers pop a bit. I look around that league and really only see a few guys who could legitimately play in the NHL and maybe only one as a starter. Guys like Huska, Fucale, and Smith are starting goalies... and in Huska and Fucale's cases, they couldn't even hold down an AHL starting job let alone a NHL backup role.

I do think Russia can produce elite goalies and do it at a rate higher than most any other country maybe outside the US.

Saying that... Avs should sign Isayev ASAP. I don't care that he's under 6'... he can move and stop a puck.

Do we even have a DU thread anymore? Went to the game last night. Sucks that we lost but was an incredible game to watch. Hope DU settles the score tonight to even things out.

callum ritchie has eight points in 6 games played
He had a nice game yesterday against Brantford highlighted by his primary assist chasing down a defender retrieving the puck in his own end, lifting his stick and feeding his teammate in the slot. Great play by Ritchie.

He’s one point off of averaging 1.5ppg in his first 6 games returning from injury. Encouraging returns on the Ritchie pick so far.
