Just glad we didn't feel compelled to take a Dman in the first two rounds this year. Next year is the time to take a Dman, though there look to be a few really good forwards, also.

I hope they let Foligno walk or they trade him. Same for Middleton. He is not great in the top 4.

It’ll be interesting to see how much Hartman expects to get paid after this season.

Is Kumpulainen really young for his draft class? Weird to see him at 19 while Stramel and Heidt are 20.

I’m super pumped about our center prospect depth now. You’ve got the boom or bust guys (Rossi, Khusnutdinov, Heidt). Then you have the guys with higher floors and upside (Stramel, Kumpulainen, Bankier).

Idk if it was discussed as I’ve been away for work and between vacations but Russo interviewed Boudreau during the cup finals and found some comments from Bruce really interesting. Basically said that Spurgeon is a guy he would love on absolutely any team but that he is miscast as a top pairing D and should be the 3-4 guy tops. Which is kind of telling to me about our defense right now. Brodin though elite on the defensive side would be in that range for most teams as well and like our C and scoring depth we lack top tier talent on D. Wish we would have changed up our mix some a few years back, and though I was a huge critic of Dumba, I think with the right guys in front of him he could have been in the right role here.. his expectations just varied because our “top” guys don’t produce.

I've been saying this for years.

It's why I can't stand his contract, 2nd pair d-men shouldn't be getting paid that much.

That's why he should've never been re-signed here back when he got his deal. Should've been traded. He's never been worth that contract.

I can’t imagine how bad this defense would be if they didn’t sign Spurgeon.
Butterfly effect, would have someone else here a long time ago that is more appropriate for the 2nd pair. Brodin/Dumba was our real top pair anyway despite what Russo et al claimed. Ice time and usage made that clear.

Given the type of player’s that Guerin has shown interest in, I don’t think he would’ve allocated that cap any better than Spurgeon.

Of all the problems this team has, Brodin and Spurgeon are not it. The defense has statistically been the best in the league for the past decade, which I don’t think is a coincidence.

There’s not 60 defensemen in this league that are better than Spurgeon. When you’re lacking a true elite defenseman, you’re better off having 2 Top 30 guys that can carry their own defensive pairing.

I never said Brodin was, I just said Spurgeon was never worth his deal. I have believed that since before it was signed, and he has done nothing to change my mind throughout the deal.

$1.5M difference between Brodin and Spurgeon’s deal is pretty immaterial. Although, probably not as immaterial with our cap restraints.

I think our defense gets taken for granted. Things could be much worse and I think that’ll become clearer when they’re gone. Moving on from every piece of our defense with the exception of Brodin would not have gone well.

I still say Dumba was more worth his $6m than Spurgeon his $7m.
Dumba was overall underrated by most people here, through his entire tenure here.

Dumba's deal would have been a steal had he not fallen off a cliff after the injury.

Spurgeon is career -19 in the playoffs, -6 in 2 out of the last 3, and career playoff ppg is .4… which is ironically higher than I imagined. Regardless, as Bruce stated.. he’s not a 1 or 2, and is being cast as one.. that’s the problem

Gustavsson (and Duhaime) filed for arbitration, as expected.

Suppose they can't reach an agreement with Gus before the arbitration date, will Wild elect for 1 year contract so he'd still be RFA next offseason?

Depends on the cap hits. If the neutral party throws us a 3 x2.5m option I’d think they take it.

Yup, an AI is consulted to win Stanley Cup in 2026. Every move will be made with that in mind. Btw, Dumba seemed to take it easy last season, you plan on signing him?

My understanding is that it's either 1 or 2 years and the party that didn't initiate the process (Wild) gets to pick their preference.
Ahh I wasn’t sure the options for term. If that is the case I’d think they go away from the one year route to have a steady idea until cap hell is over

Any word if Guerin is planning to re-sign Shaw? He seemed like he was starting to put it all together before his latest injury. I just feel bad for the guy at this point.

Uhm. No, almost certainly not - even if AI were capable of that, it would take old-hockey humans to adopt it, and they wouldn't all at once; no, he didn't; and no, we don't.

I feel terrible for the guy. I hope Guerin does sign him, but things are very tight right now with the cap, so I'm not sure if he really can. Shaw deserves another shot once recovered.

I could be wrong but I thought Russo said a week ago or so that the Wild were thinking of extending him. I'm in the same boat though. I hope we trade him. I don't know of his value but we should try to get to most out of it. Players like him tend not to age well once they past age 30 imo.
