Not shocking to me. I agree completely. Coke is much more addictive than alcohol or weed. The downward spiral is faster and harder. It’s much better for anyone that they never try it to find out where it takes them. Why would you bring in a guy who has started down that spiral to be around a bunch of youngsters with too much money to spend? Yes, they can get anything they want without him around but it’s foolish to put temptation closer.
I feel like I either didn’t communicate my point very well, or you didn’t glean it from my comments.
To be clear, I don’t have a personal issue with someone using recreational drugs. I feel like if you wanna hit the bong at home, pop some molly at a festival, touch the end of time with DMT, do some lines at the bachelor party, or embark on a transformative ayahuasca spiritual journey; hey, that’s your business. If one feels like that enriches their life and isn’t actively harming anyone, I have no problem with that. If one can do those things and still maintain their professionalism and productivity, I got no problem working alongside them.
To that end, it seems to be a, not so secret, secret that many NHLers do coke to some degree. There could be one or more players currently on the Sharks with some sort of habit. If I’m GMMG, I’m not overly concerned with ensuring any acquisitions have a pristine past. These are young men making millions; thinking some GM machinations are going to keep all the young prospects on the straight and narrow seems naive in the extreme.
In Ružička‘s case my qualms are not at all that he did some coke. Frankly, I’d be surprised if any NHLer with a personality even remotely resembling extrovert hasn’t done some coke at some point in their career. If the team finds out a player is abusing drugs they should send them through treatment, let them take stock, and have another go at things.
My issue with Ružička is he’s seemingly about as stupid as one can get. Frankly, I cannot fathom the absolute dearth of intelligence it takes to think posting a video of oneself mid coke binge to social media could lead to anything other than catastrophically negative outcomes to one’s career. If someone needed to explain that to him prior to this event, what are the other seemingly dead obvious things needing to be explained? Is he just a walking time-bomb of poor decisions? It’s precisely that level of moronity I’d aim to keep off the team. I understand NHL players, as a population, aren’t necessarily known to be the brightest bulbs but this level of stupid should be avoided at all costs.
