To be honest, he has been getting worse each season. The only argument in his favor is that he is still young.

But anyone suggesting his trajectory is a positive one is not watching the games.
You have your opinion on that. That’s fine. To suggest that I don’t watch every game is wrong. I watch every game. Ferraro does so many little things that don’t register. That’s why he’s in demand.

It sounds like Edmonton or Toronto may give up a 1st for Ferraro, so I'd take that
If Edmonton tells him to do what he’s good at and that he doesn’t have to play hero ball that could be seriously significant pick-up for them to alleviate the workload of skinner. Mario’s game screams playoffs.

He does, and his leadership is, of course, useful, but I also think that someone who excels at the little things would be more valuable to a playoff team trying to grind through tough series in April and May.

It's why when Mario has been out this year the team didn't do appreciably worse without him (in fact, they may have actually won at a higher rate). The Sharks are in a position where looking toward the future is a requirement, so adding another first this year--while certainly no guarantee you're going to get someone who ever reaches Ferraro's level in the NHL--does open up some important possibilities for Mike Grier: he could package a couple picks more easily to move up to get a target, he could feel more comfortable using a first on a goalie (which is an obvious black hole in the system), he could feel better about taking a chance on a high-upside riskier pick, etc.

Meanwhile, Ferraro's contract will likely be up by the time the Sharks are next playing important games in April and May, so to me it would be one of those tough moments for Grier but making a deal of Ferraro for a first would be the right move.

Well said. I think it only gets tough for Grier if Mario asks out. Otherwise, I’d be willing to bet he wants Ferraro in Teal.

If Ferraro isn't traded, and that's assuming there's genuine league interest, I would imagine that's Grier's call to keep him here meaning his next contract would likely be twice as bad. If MG is actually getting calls for him, him being able to realize and cut bait would do wonders for his reputation vs. keeping him around as a "leader", and I don't even mind Mario. But you need to realize mistakes before they happen.

On a completely contradictory note, I hope they keep Kunin around. I'd say only him Sturm, Eklund, Granlund, and Carpenter look like they're trying every shift. Would much rather have him here long term than Duclair.

Seriously, the guy was just having a good time. Insane to post that video to social media but it seems reasonable to assume he was high out of his mind when he did it. If anything he might need a stint in the player assistance program. Typical cheap ass Coyotes move to just immediately terminate the contract like that.
Dude was literally a waiver wire pickup and is almost 25 without having established himself as an NHL player. I'm all for taking chances on tools and talent, but this is just a bad take because he's objectively mediocre in addition to an off ice headache now. Hard pass.

Ferraro should go if a 1st is on the table w/o having to move a 3rd or better back but if it's not, it's not the worst in the world since he has two more years where he can fill in to keep Muk, Thrun, and Okhotiuk at the depth levels while they go through growing pains. I don't think it means they're primed to re-sign him. If anything, Ferraro's current contract is a sort of passive admission that they had no plans to keep him beyond it because it takes him straight to UFA. If he was in the plans, Ferraro would've either extended for longer or was bridged before a new contract.

As for the rest, I wouldn't qualify Kunin. 3 mil to keep him isn't worthwhile because if he doesn't have trade value now (which he shouldn't at 2.75 mil), he won't at that level either. He also doesn't play in a manner that is a net positive for the team. I'd keep Sturm, Eklund, Granlund, and Carpenter as well but in Granlund and Sturm's case, if there's trade value there, I'd move them too. Carpenter doesn't have trade value but a vet 4th liner as a placeholder during some lean years is fine to keep and also fine to let walk too. Duclair isn't worth keeping around either, imo.

I'd like to make room for the younger players where possible. I think a roster spot should be made available to Muk, Thrun, Smith, Musty, and Gushchin as theirs to lose going into it.
