Starting to really think that the Penguins will pick in the top 10, give us an unprotected 2025 pick and be even worse next season
Since I'm a Sharks fan, my initial inclination is that the pick will be pushed back to 2025 and somehow they'll find a way to actually be good and make one final playoff run for Sid and Geno and we'll get like the 29th pick in a shitty draft.

Yup, my instinct is that this year’s Penguins is the 2015 Sharks. I feel like they’ll rebound when they get a new coach.

However they do have Doug Wilson on the "brain" trust over there, if there is anybody who could help turn a bad situation worse it is him.

That's a change for Couture if he's actually willing to move now.

Hertl will probably want out if Logan gets traded (writing will be on the wall for how bad we will be for years). And I think we actually need Hertl to stay if Logan gets traded. Always was on board with trading Hertl because Logan seemed like a lifetime shark

Sheng has mentioned multiple times on his podcast recently that he believes Hertl wants out.

Trading both of them is 100% the way to go. We need a completely fresh start.

Team is going to be historically bad for many years. Like does Eklund develop with no one next to him or are you trading him away as well at that point?

If anything Eklund has looked better playing center away from Hertl and Couture than he ever looked with them.

Sign more Sturms, Bennings and Ruttas to provide veteran leadership in the short term. Ultimately though if this team is ever going to be good we will need to draft and develop a core of legit stars capable of taking the reins by force. That has been a feature of every successful rebuild around the league.

It "feels" better if we keep one of Couture or Hertl around for leadership, but as Hodge just said... Ruuta and Sturm have actually won cups, so... They just haven't developed as a prime prospect, otherwise they are likely very good role models.

I think we're already going to be historically bad for many years. It's a bit scary to strip it to the studs, but as we can see, we're now behind in the tank race for the second straight year because we didn't and it means come late 2020's we're less likely to have the star power AND depth of an Anaheim or Chicago. At least one of those teams will likely develop into a force of nature.

Trading Cooch, Hertl, or both simply gives us a better chance at Hagens or McKenna or whoever else in those drafts emerges as a franchise talent. Eklund stays on our team for 5 more years developing, and if he does so well, he's a key piece. If he doesn't, he gets traded away and the rebuild continues. We truly are in a very deep dark ravine right now, I think many of us see that but some don't quite realize how bad it is and will continue to be for another 3-5 seasons.

I wouldnt trade both Hertl and Logan, I also dont think Logan will play a full season again so I dont even know if hes tradeable.

I also dont think either of those happen during the season. They both feel like summer moves.

Trading Hertl and Couture is actually the best way to make us competitive SOONER compared to keeping them. Not only will it help improve our draft position, it will get rid of two fundamentally inefficient contracts.

Hertl and Couture aren’t even worth their cap hits now and they’re both signed until they’re 100 years old. You really think we can’t get better value for our cap dollar by spending that money on younger players via free agency or trade?

I wonder if the fact that Burns and Pavelski are still excellent players in their late thirties helps Hertl’s value a little. I could easily see teams imagining Hertl rebounding away from the Sharks with that precedent.

I would be shocked if any team made such a connection - it would be malpractice on their part.

Yesterday on NHL network Jason Demers said he recently interviewed Couture who said that at one point he wasn’t sure his current injury would allow him to play again. He also said the injury is one that can be re-aggravated (as we’ve recently seen). I don’t see any team taking on that risk.

I think less in those terms and more in terms of a team like Boston wanting Lindholm extension talks in place before making a trade for him. Think Hertl is a better player (albeit close) than Lindholm. As a UFA, someone is going to probably pay 7 years for a Lindholm at $8.5M or so with the cap going up (using the Horvat contract as a comp).

In the case of Hertl, you'd probably be getting a slight discount at $8.1M and only 6 years rather than 7. At the same time, you're giving up assets to facilitate the deal rather than just money, but you can also send bad contracts back to SJ to make up for it (I don't see SJ retaining on 6 more years of Hertl with the cap going up and teams theoretically needing that retention less and less).

I want us to hold onto hertl if he wants out. Teach him a lesson for signing that stupid contract rather than tell Joe Will to trade him.

The talk of trading Couture does seem a bit premature when right now he can’t play more than 6 games without re-aggravating his lingering injury.
