We get their 2025 1st instead of their 2024 1st, no matter where the 2025 pick ends up in the order.

I think it ends up being their choice which to give us, right? I can’t imagine they’d be any better next year so even if they’re like 9th, I imagine they give us this year’s pick, which is certainly what I hope happens!

I do wonder what the trade value of their pick is if it was a 2025 first seeing as they were bad enough to finish top ten worst?
Tough to say because I think they can easily rebound next year. It's not like their top guys are playing poorly. Crosby, Malkin, Guentzel, Karlsson, Letang, Jarry, etc. are all producing at pretty darn close to their contractual value. They're just not getting anything from the bottom of their lineup to supplement that.

Think the preferred option is still to get their pick this year somewhere in the 12-15 range as I don't think they'll truly bottom out with that many good players. I'd rather pick 15th this year than maybe 10th next year just due to the fact that it takes a year off the timeline for that player to make the NHL while probably being about the same caliber of player in the long run.

Yes it would be their choice but it's almost certain they would make the pick this year and give us next years. No GM would admit his team will be worse next year...look at 2018 when the Senators chose to pick 4th overall which gave Colorado their unprotected 1st the next year. Ottawa then finished dead last (but fell to 4th after the draft lottery).

It would be a lot of fun to root for two teams to tank instead of just the sharks though.

The pick is lottery protected, so honestly the best outcome would be for the Penguins to finish 3-4 and then lose the lottery so we get this year's pick.

All of the reporting I've seen is that the Penguins pick is top ten protected. Odds are they keep the pick if it's #3-4 and we get next year's pick.

Could have swore people were reporting lottery protected.
Nope, it’s definitely top-10 protected. So the absolute best option is that the Penguins trade Guentzel and fall into the top-10 this year, can’t find a replacement in free agency or by trade, Malkin/Crosby/Letang/Karlsson continue to degrade with age, their goaltending is worse next year, and then we get an unprotected 2025 1st which ends up top-5.

With that said, I would rather just get 11th overall this year than hope and pray for the Pens to fall apart next year like we did in 2020. A lot would have to go wrong and I doubt Sullivan would survive the year if that happened.

Don't have the tweet but Sheng reported that Kevin Labanc just thinks he needs a chance to prove himself.

Like... bro, the hell do you think you've had over the last 5+ years?
Yeah, I had to laugh when I saw that. Labanc is not going to get a one-way NHL contract offer next year.

But at the same time, what else is he going to say? “I’m super cooked, can’t keep up with NHLers, I’ve never even attempted to play defense, and every point I ever scored was a byproduct of Joe Thornton”? He’s gone to the Marc-Edouard Bure school of manifesting.

Calls him the 2nd worst GM because they haven't moved more guys to tear it down, but then also laments Grier for only having 1 retained salary spot left because he was moving guys out to try and tear it down... Truly perplexing how that logic flies to an even slightly intelligent follower of the sport.
I wonder if he knows the trade deadline hasn’t happened yet?
