If Blackwood is willing to sign for 2 years $6M, I think I might sign him, unless we're offered a 1st (perhaps with SJ sending back a 3rd). Maybe St. Louis' early 2nd from Edmonton is a viable target?
Y1: Blackwood/Askarov (44/38)- 23 yr old
Y2: Askarov/Blackwood (48/34)- 24 year old; Blackwood traded for current value.
Y3: Askarov/New Vet (52/30)- 25 year old on major new contract
In y2, a 29 year old Blackwood with 300-325 games most likely has similar value to what he has now (2nd), or if he continues to be a league average starter, it may yet grow dramatically. I don't see Askarov starting starting 50 games next year in his first full NHL season, better to bring him along slowly with a quality vet. Sorokin didn't play 50 games until he was 27 (may have at 26 if not for covid), Shesterkin at 26 (again would have at 25). Saros was 27. Bob, 24. Vasi, 23. Fleury, (20!). Price, 22 (41 games at 21). Lou at 22 (38 at 21).
Askarov already has a $2Mx2 NHL deal in his pocket, and by Y1 of his next contract he's proven he can be the first option, and been well compensated for it. Blackwood gets moved once Askarov gets his big extension.
Of course, if Blackwood wants (and finds) a 4-6 year $4-5M deal instead, I wouldn't blame him a bit. I might even go three years on Blackwood with Y2 being a split, and Y3 you extend Askarov and have Blackwood back him up (or move him on). Askarov's already opted out of one veteran goalie situation, but Blackwood isn't Saros, and his next 2 years will be in the NHL and the contract is done.
