Speculation: 2023-24-25 Sharks Roster Discussion

I'm inclined to agree with @Gecklund, but let's look at the draft class as a whole. How are the 2017-2020 draft classes doing compared to others? How are they doing when it comes to "expectations"?

My intuition is that the 2018 class has poor results. Besides Miller and Durzi, I can't think of a single player drafted after Merkley who is a top-half-of-the-lineup player.

I can't think of a single "late-round" gem (theoretically the players who would benefit most from development) from the 2019 draft. I think Kaliyev was drafted late, but it was a shock that he fell that much...

2017 had Robertson and Batherson as late-round gems (Robertson in the early 2nd IIRC), but compare that to 2016 (DeBrincat, Fox, Bratt, Girard, Hagel...)

Not so much our roster related, but I just came to the realization that no matter how EK65 does in Pittsburgh, because they are Pitt and have Crosby and Malkin and media attention, non-affiliated fans will just assume that he will be better in Pitt than he ever was here.

And that more people will highlight his (rare) good defensive plays, but will be quick to note how much of a - he was on the Sharks, and will pretend he didnt do that in Teal.

Videos like ^^^ for example
God, I don't think I've seen him backcheck that hard in 4 years... Glad to see him gone, I know that's not the majority opinion. If there's any trouble in PIT I think we'll see fewer and fewer of these types of plays.

There's tons of better guys after Merkley that were drafted in 2018: Miller, Sandin, Samuelsson, Romanov, Durzi, Fehrevary, etc.

Obviously you can't find any late-round gems from that time period yet because those draft classes are still developing. Most of those late-round guys from ~2016 just broke out in the last couple years (Bratt, Hagel, Colton) hence why we should except to see some 2018-2020 "gems" breaking out in the next year or two. Think of a guy like Maccelli who just made the Coyotes last year. He was only drafted in 2019, but for all we know could have a Bratt-like development.

I had forgotten about Maccelli (since the Coyotes are an incredibly forgettable team).

However, I wanted to clarify...obviously, there were quite a few players drafted after Merkely who are better than him. However, I don't think any of them besides Durzi and Miller are top-6/top-4 guys.

Wait what…

Every single guy that was listed is better than Durzi.

I think Pittsburgh could be dark horse to miss the playoffs. Karlsson can move the puck and make plays, but core of the team is so old and it showed in that particular game against Ottawa where they were Shutout by Korpisalo. I know it's preseason, but Pittsburgh had all their guns playing.

God willing you're right. This is well established, and clear, but if they miss the playoffs, we obviously have a better chance that they have to use their top 10 protection, and if they are that bad this year, they'll be even worse next year when we would then get the pick.

That's the dream. It's all Ottawa-Sharks Karlsson trade over again if that happens and even better now we are the ones enjoying the benefits.

EDIT: In that case we could say Karlsson is the master of turning franchises from playoffs to rebuilders in a season haha xD

If they finish somewhere in the 11-15 range, maybe the Sharks can package their 2nd round pick (hopefully #33) and another 2nd round pick (maybe acquired for Barabanov/Duclair?) with it and move into the top-10 to draft a defenseman (Jiricek?) to pair with Celebrini/Eiserman. Would be quite the haul!

I'd be ecstatic if wth the Pens pick, the Sharks walked away from the 2024 draft with Nygard

This is the Sharks we are talking about. The Pens are not only going to make the playoffs but they are also going to knock the Devils out from making the ECF so they don't get the upgraded 1st.
