Lassi Thomson waived. Big righthanded shot and a good skater but makes questionable decisions to say the least. Might be worth a look if only to keep Gawanke on his toes.

He’s really bad. It would be a toss up whether I want Ryan Merkley or Thomson. If we were claiming a D, it should have been Ty Smith. I think there will be a lot more intriguing waiver adds next week.

It sounds good to get players for free on waivers but they need to then play in the NHL. With how many one way D contracts the sharks have they should not add another one they need to keep in the NHL.

The sharks are not getting a player on waivers unless McDavid is waived.

They don’t necessarily need to play in the NHL. There’s rules where they can go to the AHL.

They do not need to be in the NHL, they can be sent down. And if they do get picked up again, then oh well it's no loss for the Sharks.

Nor do any of our defensemen have protection from being sent to the AHL (even Vlasic no longer has that protection).

This is also a good point. I don’t think there’s really any D on this roster that are worth not waiving. Ferraro, Rutta, Benning are probably the closest just because I think we can get value from them even if not much. I’d prefer to not lose Knyzhov or Ohtokiuk. The rest of the waiver eligible guys, meh. If we lose them it’s sort of an oh well moment.

Yes but if the GM has a reputation of claiming guys only to send them down and through waivers it will definitely rub agents and players the wrong way. These are still human beings who probably don’t like having to up and move just to be sent down on waivers again.

Not so much our roster related, but I just came to the realization that no matter how EK65 does in Pittsburgh, because they are Pitt and have Crosby and Malkin and media attention, non-affiliated fans will just assume that he will be better in Pitt than he ever was here.

And that more people will highlight his (rare) good defensive plays, but will be quick to note how much of a - he was on the Sharks, and will pretend he didnt do that in Teal.

I can't tell if the prospect hype train is better than ever, or if the talent crunch is a real thing, because the waiver wire looks so enticing.

I think it’s partly that our best prospects aren’t ready yet and the prospect wire guys are mostly ready to make the jump, and partly that our team is in the “testing ground” phase of the rebuild, so I think taking other people’s scraps to see if we can make a delicious pie is enticing. The stakes are so low, it’s like, why not?

Hype is going to continue to grow exponentially as social media does. I think we're just seeing a lot of those 2018/2019 draft picks finally be given up by their clubs (Merkley last year, Zadina this summer, and now the Ottawa guys).

Apprently ~5 years is when we can call them busts!

makes me wonder how bad covid screwed the development up of those years or if this is basically normal and we just didnt pay as much attention

I mean maybe a little but I don’t think you can fully blame covid for the a lot of these guys.

This is definitely normal with prospects that are tweeners for the most part and just not good enough. I think the bigger thing is that we don’t have very much in the tank offensive talent wise this year. None of these guys being waived really are much.

Lots of players went almost a full year without seeing a hockey game and for the majority of them even a full year without being able to use a training facility to keep in shape.

Yeah that’s just not true. Pretty much also NHL players had a way to stay in shape and all these guys being waived right now were drafted before covid.

I’m not saying covid isn’t to blame at all but like it’s been 3 years and lots of these guys never took a step. At this point you can only blame covid so much. Also the only one that wasn’t seen as risky and was seen as high potential is Zadina. The rest were seen as risky or not having high potential. This is very normal though with these failed first round picks being waived who just never took the next step or guys that their fan base overrates.

Last year had guys like Darren Raddysh, Eyssimont, Gawanke, Day, Phillips, Tufte, Studenic, Zohorna, Caggiula, Lind, Fucale, Carlsson, Juolevi, De Leo, Fix-Wolansky, Barre-Boulet, Beaudin, Sikura, Juulsen, Cholowski, Andersson, Martinook, Janmark, Samurokov, Kostin, Kovacevic, Valimaki, Kaut, Bowers, Friedman, Daccord, Mahura

My point is that guys this level get waived every year at this point
