1) There is not a world that exists where Barabanov is fetching a 2nd in 2022. Dude had 72 games of NHL experience as a 27 year old and 38 points to his name. No way in the world he was fetching more than probably a 4th at that point in time. He could have gotten a 2nd last year under Grier after backing up his good play with another good year, but no way in 2022.

2) You're not getting Muk without Hertl as Meier is not putting up 31 goals without Hertl last year before being dealt. Thus, his trade value is lower.

Again, nobody is arguing that re-signing Hertl was the right move, but the idea that it set the franchise back several years is nonsense. Would imply that rather than rebuilding until 2028 as we are on course for now, we're magically competing again in 2026 in this alternate universe (which is blatantly unrealistic and wrong).
Okay so a 4th for Barabanov who cares

Hertl was f***ing awful last year. Timo’s point totals have nothing to do with Hertl and everything to do with Karlsson.

Would anyone be interested in Chychrun or are we all still recovering from the last OTT d-man we traded for?

The only reason I would want Chychrun is to maybe take on some of his salary for a high pick. But I don't think he is paid enough for that. I certainly don't want to give up assets to get him.

4.6 is enough to make a difference for some teams. For a team that has 12k in cap space and just over 1 mil in trade deadline cap space, it would be huge.

For some, but is it worth a more than a 2nd to anyone? I don't like the idea of losing our last retention slot this season and next for that price.

Pesce would become our best defensemen BY FAR.

Next year?
Ferraro-Benning
Muhkamadulim-Pesce
Thrun-Emberson
Vlasic/Burroughs

At least you'd be able to see the start of a future blue line.

Pesce seems like the kind of signing the Sharks would be looking to make 5ish years from now.

I agree. We should probably first be sure we have the right players to build around first rather than building around wishes and dreams. Eklund and Smith obviously have promise, but neither are guaranteed to be franchise cornerstone type players. Maybe Celebrini could be, if the lottery gives us a break for once, but even he isn't really a guarantee. Besides, odds are we wont have a chance to get him anyway.

Feels like nowadays you need a real superstar or two type of player to be a real contender. Almost every good team around the league seems to have at least 1 or 2 guys who are better than a point per game type players. Feel like I would rather just keep drafting high and accumulate depth and hopefully one of those picks, or a handful of them in a trade can land us our next superstar. Once we do that, we can start looking into bigger money trades and FA signings.

Otherwise I am really afraid we are just going to be stuck in limbo like the Sabres and Senators.
