I don`t know where to post it, but Igor Larionov is such a great person and coach.
Fans, media, players in KHL - all like him. He definitely can work with young players, he is like father for them. His team is like Cinderella. Torpedo hasn`t money or something but this team plays well and their hockey is very attractive.
I would be happy if Sharks hire him for some position.

EDIT: He is one of the reasons for Silayev’s progress
Would love that, tbh.

We need this run to help reestablish Hoffman, Duclair and Barabanov's trade values. Meanwhile Chicago is busy re-signing all of their free agents. As long as we keep pace with the Blackhawks until the trade deadline we will easily finish last.
lol establish Hoffmann trade value, there is none no one will take him he’s dead cap space taking up a roster spot

The way I get around this is to be excited about the worst possible pick you could get.

For example, I want to finish last so that we have the choice of everyone still available at 3OA. I do not expect Celebrini at all, but I'd rather pick 3 than 4. I want Grier to have his choice of the big D prospects (except for whoever goes 2nd).
Fantilli or Carlsson > Smith

Won’t even be close in years to come and that’s very frustrating. Damn Noah Gregor.

You should try your Nostradamus impersonation in the game threads.
I mean is it that hot of a take? Smith has 31 points (yes in less games 21) in the NCAA. Fantilli has 27 points (47 games) in the NHL playing for a team that is worse than us offensively and Carlsson has 18 (29 games) playing in the NHL. Yes all three are trying to acclimate to new teams but one is acclimating to a team that’s 30 minutes away from his parents with his 2 linemates for the last year and is on a power house. The other 2 are not particularly close to their hometown and have had to fight for a bottom feeder.

Like I get it. Will Smith is absolutely better than most give him credit for. Will Smith will be a good player in the NHL. Carlsson and Fantilli are on different tiers than him though.

Let me start by saying I agree with you: Smith is a tier below Fantilli and Carlsson and we all knew it at the draft. It's why so many folks wanted to take the swing on Michkov.

That said, I'm posting to share Grier's POV on this, at least the one he publicly shared yesterday. Some fan asked why Smith wasn't in the NHL like Marleau was at 18 and his answer started with "Will is as good as Leo or Fantilli." Then went on to say that Marleau was a freak who looked 27 at 18, and that Leo and Fantilli are both fully grown men while Smith still looks like an 18 year old kid. That they're going to be patient with prospects to make sure they're ready for the rigors of 82 games vs. men.

I like that take, other than the fact that I probably disagree (and who knows if Grier even believes it) that Will is in the same tier as Leo or Fantilli. We will see over time (no shit). But it makes sense not to rush kids to the league if they're not fully grown yet.

Pashelka's take

One tidbit that didn't make it into Sheng's analysis was that Grier said with the one retention slot "we might want to use it on one of our deals," which all signs point to Vlasic, so there is a chance they buy him out this summer.

EDIT: also his "two to three years maybe pushing for a playoff spot" is the only public thing he can say in line with what is realistic, which is that it's 3 years until we're even sniffing playoffs.

I’m not saying he should be rushed. That wasn’t the point.

You don't fill a retention slot with a buyout.

I don't disagree with the idea that Smith likely will end up as less of a star/impact player than the three drafted ahead of him. But to say it won't even be close in the years to come, when we're talking about 18-year-olds here, one of whom (our guy) hasn't even had a chance to show off what he's got as an NHL player yet, who will take longer simply because of the body type--well, it just feels a little premature to me to write him off already as even being in the conversation with those guys.

I’ll stick by my original assessment the sharks will be lucky if he is as good as a prime David Legwand

This misses the real value in trading for Hoffman; the Sharks would have to include the details of the process by which they reanimated his corpse. That could be huge! Montreal could bring back Rocket and Henri Richard, Chicago Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita. Reanimated corpses can be a game changer for the NHL!

Given how "well" Hoffman is playing, we could just send them a VHS copy of "Spock's Brain."

Or they could keep him dead and do what they did in Return of the King.

New GM: Hoffman, fulfill your oath to the Sharks by playing amazing for us (insert new team).
Hoffman: Only the king of Gondor commands me.
New GM guy: Pulls out Narsil!!!

The dead are game-changers!

Hoffman is probably the most likely Shark to be traded before the deadline. He has a track record of scoring goals, teams will value that over half a season on a horrible team.

Not sure about that Hoffman has scored at a rate of just under 17 goals a season the last three years. He has not been a good goal scorer since the 2019-20 season. Hope I'm wrong though and we get a pick for Hoffman.

Thanks for the Legwand reference, I totally went down a rabbit hole because I vaguely remembered him being sort of tied to the Sharks but not really... I landed here at the bottom of rabbit hole.

TB takes Vinny Lecavalier, Nashville takes David Legwand, and then the Sharks (finished 16th overall) take Brad Stuart 3 OA.

I'd forgotten about this whole thing.

Legward was right in the middle of it after all. :sarcasm:
